I saw a question about how we got the stone up there. We first called the land company that owns the property. We requested permission to use a road on their property. They were gracious enough to let us use it. A couple helping with the setting came from MI with an ATV. They hauled it up the mountain and around the top, then back down the hollow where the grave was located. We could have carried it but thankful we didn’t have to. There were 15 or so people whom walked up the mountain to help clean the area. Two weeks later we did the dedication. Kind of like a funeral. There is no easy way to access the cemetery without going across Mr Spence’s yard. It would be nice if the land company would make a road up to it so people could get to it.

Leo, I am Terry Vance. I along with a few others installed the military headstone for James Vance after 2 years of search his military history. He joined the 34th in the fall of 1862 but was in an earlier group before being changed to the 34th Batt VA Cavalry. He served under VA Witcher for the duration of his time. They disbanded around Christiansburg, VA April the 10th 1865., the day after Lee surrendered to Grant. Jim was never in the Logan Wildcats. He was in the 34th the whole time. He was on his way home and taken prisoner along with 3 cousins, Meekin Vance Sr, Meekin Vance Jr and Jackson Vance. This info found in the national archives. They were taken to Cumberland, MD. When Asa McCoy died James was in Narrows, VA. Asa died most likely from frostbite because his whole unit was disbanded in Cattlettsburg, KY just a few days after his last battle in Marion, VA.
Asa’s wife applied for a military pension and if you read it you will find his wife lied. She testified that he died trying to go back to his unit but they were disbanded, nothing to go back to. She never said anything about a certain group killing him or mentioned any names. After the Union Commander questioned her he deem her tale untrue and denied the pension. She also got married that very day.
The old headstone for James wasn’t moved. I set the new behind the fieldstone so as not to disturb the small granite one. I used a compass to line the new stone up to the east. We had about 14 people dressed for his headstone dedication which lasted about an hour. The 34th Battalion BA Cavalry camp 1863, 22nd VA Infantry and the John McElhanny 840 camp did the honors for Jim. I would never have undertaken such a venture had I not spent the last 2 years researching Jim’s life.

I’m Mark Minter, great gr grandson of Moes Adair, also a member of the the 34 VA Battalion Cavalry, company C, formerly, the MCDOWELL partisan ranger’s, there’s a marker to a action this company was in Marked, in Welch , . It lacks in clear information, however I’m glad there’s a marker in the county, that is almost completely skirted on the war history, great area for, Guerillia tactics. I thank you and all others who are doing so much for our true history,SCV. And UDC , OCR, and others. Jim is mentioned in the regimental series, by Scott Cole, in the 80’s, it’s one of the better reached works. My Grandfather had to add a letter to our name, some used it, some did not, after the break up in Christiansburg, he went on, to NC , stayed with others, around General B, Duke. Came back to McDowell country, in July, signed a parole, in Charleston, in the back of the book, there’s an order signed by General US Grant, says in a paraphrase, Any former, Black Flaggers, can not return to , Va, Md, Ky, NC , TNN, but may go to any of the 48 counties of the New State of WestVirginia, My Grandfather was already settled in Bartley Hollow since 1857, w his bride Sarah Mullins, it was a brand new county born of old Tazewell. He and his brothers are buried on Shortridge, all 3 side by side all born in Ky, there father was John A Adair, 8 th Governor of Ky, John was born in Southwest GA in Adairsville, a very interesting life, his brother James married into the Cherokee’s and living with them 40 years, the name is still large among “ the western band. Anyway, they’re there , in the mountains, bc they all stuck together , these brothers, and generations, 7 now, John Jr, Art, William, 30th Battion Sharp Shooter’s, my research shows, that this was a Artillery battery, Not what most suspect. And Moses, left @ door of US congressman, @ the time , John A Adair’s Whitehall Ky home, purchased from Mr Senator Henry Clay, No he was always a Democrat. As far as I know,it was all lost. There Father, after some time from his death in LA , was moved to Frankfort Ky.
Point is, we of this regiment have a history as rich as the James and Younger’s and maybe more so, the regiment was given a Flag by General JEB Stewart, for action on 3rd day of Gettysburg. As I’m sure you know. And they was at Brandy’s Station, action at Fleetwood hill, Under General,” Grumble “ Jones of GladeHill, and after the Yankees stopped killing us that way, they had to maintain in many other way’s. 158 years and there great crusade, still blaming our people for it’s, programs that have not, given complete peace to the truth. It was a thing that turned a Republic in to an Empire. It’s the frist time in the history of the said union that the constitution was disregarded in too many ways, it was a horrible thing, Mr Lincoln did,and today, he is in the eyes of the civilized world, bc of propaganda, a “ saint “ . Lol 😝 it’s a lie. And I hope there will be, a reconning, and justice to the fact’s. If people knew enough of the facts, Mr Lincoln, is very much in line w Adolph Hitler….. I have a feeling, I’ll be very censored for this, and perhaps not even posted. I’m not hating anyone, we are Americans, but some don’t, even recognize, we fought against a tyranny, and yes we lost. Not slavery, that was a issue, that could only at the time be legally settled by the States. Juneteenth 😂, Texas wasn’t even a State, until 1870, it was a military district. The “ Yankees completely rejected in the 1830’s any proposal of what the British was doing. And who was it who proposed it? Virginia by God, and Kentucky, Delaware and Maryland. It’s all facts. It didn’t go with Mr Loyd Garrison’s “ Higher Law, he offered to publicly burn the constitution. And this so called higher law” killed a lot of humans, and worse of all babies died!

I was watching a video a few minutes ago before this one, and man he was basically calling you out about not having truthful history on Mr. Vance. I just watched this video and I don’t know what video that cat watched but nowhere in this video did you say any of your information was 100% factual. You literally said that people need to take the stories and research with a grain of salt.. I thank you kindly sir for telling the stories like you know them and for “keeping it real” (see what I did there?).

It is a shame that there are untold thousands of grave sites out there that no one has a clue about.
You're right, nobody knows about the personalities of the people involved in the fued or exactly who did what. And that leaves us to just guess about what happened.
In my opinion, if the movie was anywhere near accurate, both families would have been much better off if they would have strung up Jim Vance and Perry Kline and just called it even. But that's my opinion on how Hollywood told the story, and Lord knows they wouldn't tell anything but the truth.
Anyway, thanks again for going back up the mountain to show his marker and the story.

Every time I see or read something about the "fued" I think of my late wife when she got serious about digging into her geneogy. She was a missouri girl born in Joplin. I remember her coming into a room and saying, "Hey, I;'m related to the Hatfireld and McCoy fued families". I said "Which side?". She said "Both of them".

Wouldn't it be great if someone would do a documentary on the Hatfield's and McCoy's that is accurate? I love Kevin Costner, but did not like him in the movie about the feud. I am unsure if any of the content was accurate. I chuckled when you were talking about getting to the gravesite via car. I know what you mean about directions "hillbilly style." I live in middle Tennessee and we have a lot of family cemeteries just like the one Jim Vance is buried in. I know of one near my family’s farm that has graves going back to the Revolutionary War period. I haven’t been to it in years but there were still some legible stones dating back to the Revolutionary War period.

Some of them have undoubtedly been told so many times over the years, things have changed or twisted around, and the accounts are no where near what they were originally. You flashed on the video, that Jim's wife was rumored to be buried somewhere in the cemetery. I wonder why was she not buried beside Jim? 🤔 Do you have an opinion on where the actual site of Jim's killing is?

I discovered your channel today. I am kin to the Hatfields and want to find out as much as I can. My Great Grandmother Cora Salyers Gross Blankenship was born in 1900 in Kentucky on border to West Virginia. She was married to Isaac Gross. He was working on Railroad and train derailed and killed him. She later married John Blankenship. Cora bought and ran a boarding house. I think this was in War,WV. Cora's daughter is my Grandmother, Golda/Goldie. My Grandmother married Earl Jennings. His father was Chris Jennings. They had 4 kids. My Dad was born in '41. WWII ,then Earl went to war. Goldie moved to TX with kids when my Dad was a toddler. She made several trips back to WV. Once was to put a headstone down for her mother Cora. Goldie passed away in '08@ 88 yrs old. We have a family of hunters because of them.
Hmmm , yeah . Lots of thoughts on this . But also , maybe . If he was put in a box and into the back of a wagon . How many MPH could they go on those roads back then ?! 1 MPH , maybe 2 MPH ?! Then , if it is 13 miles one way around the Mtn . It could take 6hrs ONE way , just to get to where they could go up from the side you started this vid on . But "IF " there was a path from this side where he died . And even if they only could do a 1/2 MPH . They'd be at the site in 2hrs ... But , I sure do NOT know how they got Jim to his grave site !? It's wonderful that someone honored Jim Vance with soldiers stone. Being a Yankee, I still honor him for his service. He fought for what he believed. It was a sacrifice every soldier who enlists. We're all American.

My mom is from West Virginia and I was told we were Yankee's because we fought with the North. So it could be related to a geographical area or a political belief. During the Civil War, weren't the two sides called the rebels and the yanks?

What I loved about West Virginia…even though it’s a mile to walk it’s 10 miles to drive. Lol 28 miles in 45 minutes. Up, down and around 50 curves. So glad we didn’t see any of those spiders when we were there. Yuck! Sorry Leo but no spiders are cute or pretty. It’s very cool that Jim Vance finally got a proper grave marker. Video Leo .me and my kinfolks live up in the Appalachian mountains of Kentucky in Perry county we also have aot of unmarked Graves from one ridge to the next in our mountains and also a family plot! What we call cold mountain ridge..we also have a lot of moonshine steals that are scattered out throughout the hills of our 102 acres of land that was our grandfathers all the way back to my great-great-grandfather's they're never messed with we consider them markers... My Aunt Sally and Uncle Lacey are up in age!! They also tell us stories about the hatfields and McCoys very interesting sitting around the bonfire after a hard week work in the sawmill listening to the stories of our history! And our ancestors... And playing some good old instruments...we love y'all's videos Leo. From one Appalachian to another God bless y'all My brother....

I'm descended from Asa. Oral tradition in the McCoy family about what happened to Asa was he was home from the war with frostbite. Jim Vance sent word that he was going to kill him for being a Union Soldier. He hid out in a cave and a boy named Mose would bring him food. Jim Vance and Cap Hatfield followed the boys footsteps in the snow one day and found Asa. They did shoot him that day. This came from Larkin to Jake to William Sr, then to my dad William Jr.
Leo historically speaking the most accurate rifle long-range shooter available at that time the sharps creedmoor rifle could not have made a shot that long. It is still a very fascinating piece of history of West Virginia folklore, I personally think the West Virginia department of education should make many of your semi documentary available in the classrooms of elementary students on through high School. They separate fact from fiction n folklore, keep up the good work and God bless you and your family 🙏

That was like my paternal ancestors cemetery - about 30 people we know of, with only one marked (my g-g-gfather), on top of a mountain in the middle of a national forest. We actually had his SCV Iron Cross Dedication ceremony a few years ago (he died in 1920). The FS did take up the flags just to protect them from vandalism, but it was a cool experience. These old cemeteries are fascinating.
Literally buried in the place where he fell could mean not only the exact same spot but in the area, city etc. At that time it was common to use the term "in the/this place" to refer to the general area, I.E. city, town, county, sometimes even a the state. My local county history written in 1908 uses this term a lot. Many times I've thought the author was referring to the city because the city was the topic of the chapter, but farther on I can infer that this place meant the county or vice versa. For instance it might read such and such city business owner came to this place in 1850. While the chapter is dealing entirely with the city proper, this person resided well outside city limits so this place means the county.
My great great whatever grandmother was Sarah Vance that goes back to Abner, she was in the Buchanan Co Va area

I personally only know what history tells, but like you say, we can only take things with a grain of salt. Because we don't know the full truth about what happened. None of the people involved are here anymore to be a sounding board to get the straight facts from. Most of us who don't live in the area, can only speculate about what happened. I love your channel because it brings me personally what I seen on tv and books to real life. Not saying that they a fictional people, but it has given me a better perspective of the real people involved. Not all who were killed or injured in the feud were bad. From what you have said I have drew a conclusion that it started over a misunderstanding and kept going until people died.

To me ,sir he was a man that cared mightily for his family. He also had a beast inside him of a fiery kind , that he controlled till someone unleased that beast that protects his own. To me our young men need to learn how to be men like him , intimation and loving to those who earned it. You earned either love or respect or the beast of protection.

Most of my KY ancestors are buried up a hill with only field stone markers.
Love your videos and somedays I do hope to visit the area and visit the sights I am almost 63 but I will put on my hiking shoes and bring my hiking stick.I remember watching the earliest Hatfield and McCoy movie when I was a kid just like Bonnie and Clyde they were interesting. Newton Co Ark where my father’s family settled had feuds from the civil war too. It’s really hard to understand but just like the Bible says.

Hay Leo. Just curious what you use or do about the ticks. They are horrible here in Pensyltucky.
Deet helps a little, but not that much. The little dark deer ticks are nothing. The light brown ones are vicious!!!
Lighter fluid is what mommy used on us as kids for ticks. She “de-ticked” us when we had been up ⬆️ n the mountains playing. You ever seen how a mama monkey de-ticks her babies? Mommy would sit us down on the back porch and so through every hair, it seemed, and then go in our ears, nose, neck, arms and legs. She would pull the tick off and douse them and our arms and legs with lighter fluid. She’d spray us off with the hose and bathe us in a tub in the yard with bleach water! Then she’d light the lighter fluid and burn up the ticks. we gotta civil war grave yard in my city,its huge,right across the street, is a civilian cemetary, with some old sections you might like,i go there alot,when my bf cant,take flowers to his moms grave,and a family friend,

My family is related to the Hatfields and not mistaken we are related to the Mcoys also. The feud is over and it needs to be left in peace. That happend a long time ago. And it is sad and disheartening that so many lives were lost over nothing, and fighting over a pig well that was just an excuse to fuel the feud. Lets respect all those who died and let them RIP. One day i will visit the area in West Virginia i was born in this State, so i want to meet ny family.

They weren’t truly bad sir. People lived a lot different back then. They would fight at the drop of a hat if you insulted their family name . And didn’t give a damn bout everybody’s feelings like today. We’re true pioneer men, real men. Had to be. Lawmen were few and far between. And when you could find one he was probably crooked .

Can you guys do two different videos one on what the The mini series got right and then another one on what they Got wrong I Bet they got a lot wrong. I know so many people that have watched that show and think That most of what's on there is historically accurate but i'm not so convinced. I'm a descendant of the hatfields too and I would like to see what you guys would say.
It would take months to do it, but that is a very cool idea! The miniseries was about 50/50. They called it a "docu-drama", which explains a lot... lol

Yes the south had some faults but these are memories that our ancestors lived through which is real.hostory of how divided our country can be! Most of my ancestors that were in the Civil War was Yankees but 2 were rebels simply because they lived across the road from their brothers which happened to divide the west Virginia vs. Pa! All my ancestors were moners and farmers back then and wanted no part of it but was drafted and told either they join the side they were picked for or get hung for treason!! So the brother swore forced to fight opposite of one another they jad no choice!

It wasn’t easy. Lol fortunately someone came from MI with an ATV snd carried up across private land. It was about a 1 1/2 miles going that way. I have photos of everything thing we did.
