Sure, playing while looking at your monitor you can know that the figure in front of your character is a full sized creature, but it will never be larger than what you see on the screen. With VR you turn your actual body and just a foot in front of you staring you right in the eyes is a monster. That sort of experience is something you just can't replicate with a computer monitor. It just doesn't have that personal sense of scale and perspective.
I consider myself pretty easily scared (not disturbed), but I still delve into horror games sometimes. On desktop, I occasionally get to a point where I get so freaked out by games, I have to stop playing. In VR, it's nearly every single one. The feeling of space you get compares to just playing a desktop game - if things could actually be behind you, our outside your house.
I remember hanging out at my friend's house while his younger sister watched those on the living room TV. I remember one about pink slime being turned blue at 3 am by a SpOoOkY dEmOn...
That hallway scare and the buildup to it was just art, chefs kiss for the map creator. But I actually expected the last scare of that scene to go another way that would have made it even worse. I would have let that empty picture frame remain on both sides. And the player slowly realise it´s above them.

i loove playing vrchat horror games! a game called F.E.A.R.S is soo spooky, its got multiple levels that play to different phobias, two of my friends ditched after the first level bc it was too scary for them, highly recommend
I actually just played this a few days ago! I was buff engineer and my friend was a combine soldier and we were playing in flat mode, which kinda decreased the scaryness, but i still got pretty scared by it, the jump scares got me way better than i though they would!
I always have to remember the "I'm really here" effect when watching people play VR. Having experienced VR myself, I know just how much more "real" it feels when you have the visor on. It's so much more impactful to "be there".

HOW DID YOU GET THROUGH THE PLAYGROUND AREA IN ONE SHOT AND NEVER USING THE WHISTLE!? BROOOOOOOO. The whistle makes the closest enemy to you make a sound. If you get too close to them they get you and you reset. The others don't do anything. You managed to avoid them all and get out without using the whistle at all.. Bruhhhhhh
I remember playing this a while back in a public instance. A kid got really mad at me because he cause my lego avatar ruined the scary-ness of the world.
Ohhhh the Smile Room was so charming! I think I just have a thing for evil jesters…. oh! The ending had a rendition of Daisy Do! How cute. Can’t wait for more if!!!
another VRChat game or two you'd probably like are The Devouring, and F.E.A.R.S. Both are super great, and I highly suggest looking into other VRChat horror games because it's genuinely shocking how good some of them are.

This may be an unpopular opinion, but boy am I starting to get sick of "oh no, the geometry of this spooky place is magical and impossible, how did my apartment / childhood home get here?!" It's starting to take the intrigue out of exploration horror for me. Once you know the geometry doesn't matter, there are basically no rules.
This is a lot to accomplish in VRChat! As a horror experience, I'm glad it worked for Librarian, but for me it really lost all its stakes in the apartment section with all the resets. How can any section matter if we know it'll just reset and do the next one? How can we care about meeting our friend if nothing is real anyway? I felt like it really let down all of the work the mall section had done in establishing stakes and tension.
This world again. I played it with a friend back then and enlightened it, I wasn't really impressed with the jump scares, even after a while of being exhausted from always having the same thing thrown at me. Then there are these bad features that most people use a trail and error system and some form of labyrinth. Even if the hobby is built by devs, they should ask themselves why players like me are exhausted by this sort of thing.
