This has got to be one of my favourite Disney films now!! I just loved how healthy the way some of the characters treated each other were and how much heart is at the core of this story. Exactly what I hope for when I watch a Disney film. Enjoy :)

Fact: at first Hei Hei was to be strict and lecture Moana all the time, but the creators disliked this version and almost excluded the character from the movie... until he was transformed into provably the dumbest Disney character ever. And they celebrated it with a roast chicken (of course)

The funniest part about how good the rock does on "You're welcome" is that when he sang along to it at home, his daughter told him to be quiet because the guy in the movie sounded better xD

There is Theory that Grandma Tala was being kept alive by Tefiti's heart since it has the power to create life itself. The moment she gave it away she got sick and died

  • @Ohforgodssakethatsme

The ocean needed Moana to be the one to take the heart to Te Fiti because it wasn't about returning the heart to Te Fiti. It was about restoring the heart of Te Fiti. When Moana asks the ocean to let Te Fiti come to her, when she walks to Te Fiti unarmored and unarmed, she is telling Te Fiti that she trusts Te Fiti not 5o hurt her, that she knows Te Fiti is not a monster; that Te Fiti has had something terrible done to her, that she has been dediled and violated but that, beneath the rage and grief and pain, she is still a good being, that she is still Te Fiti.

Fun (Important Inclusion) Fact: The movie is set in Polynesia and all the main cast voice actors have either Native Hawaiian, Polynesian, or Maori heritage.

One of the coolest details about this movie is that it is inspired by a real (and so far unexplained) event: People from Polynesia had been sailing the ocean and populating Islands for a while and then they just... stopped. For about 2000 years, nothing (aproxm. 1500 Bc to 500 AD) And then they restarted. Voyaging began anew, strong as ever.

Bit behind, but... In regards to TeKa being Te Fiti; something that a lot of people seem to forget is that the soil left behind after a volcanic eruption is some of the most rich earth in existence. The entire reason The Islands are so lush is

Interesting fact: the real Maui from Polynesian folklore did do all those things Maui sings about in You Welcome, but he did it not for narcissistic reasons but because out of his many siblings he was the only one not born with godly powers and was thus excluded by his brothers from coming along on their fishing trips. So Maui did all those things to prove himself to his brothers and parents.

Oh god every time the grandma becomes the ray in the water it just slaps me with feels

  • @tylerbrown7246

The ocean being harsh and unkind is very purposeful in this movie because with Moana’s dad it needed him to stay on the island to have Moana. The first time Moana tried to sail off she didn’t have the heart yet. After she has the heart it sends a storm to push her to Maui because she didn’t know what she was doing or where she was going.

As someone from New Zealand who grew up with Maori/Polynesian culture, the small and thoughtful details in this movie blew me away. The use of native Polynesian actors and talent, the various Poly languages used throughout, the bits and pieces of this culture and that woven together to make Moana’s version. Maui himself is a real demigod for many (if not all?) of the Polynesian cultures and his tattoos/feats from “You’re Welcome” are literally myths and legends of his that I grew up with. The island he pulled from the sea is the creation legend of New Zealand! Our South Island was his canoe (waka), and the North Island is the stingray he fished up (Te Ika-a-Maui, The Fish of Maui).

Moana holding the leaf over the baby turtle is a throwback to Lilo and Stitch. In the and credits, you can see a picture of Stitch doing the exact same thing. Same pose.

I adore Moana! All of the islands in the Pacific are formed via volcanic activity, so having Te Fiti be a fiery, volatile lava goddess under her nurturing exterior makes a lot of sense, especially when she’s mad some guy stole a part of her.

when Moana calls out "I am Moana" and the orchestra swells with that Polynesian choir as she dives down to reclaim the heart, dude it moves me to tears every time, it's such a beautiful score and scene

  • @LuminousArc92

what's interesting about Te Fiti/Te Ka is that she still has the power of creation as Te Ka. Lava flowing into the water over enough time will create new islands, but without the heart the power is also highly destructive

"...people, including myself, are kind of afraid of deep, ocean water."

  • @ajandrianjafymusic

Te Fiti is at the top of my tattoo sleeve, along with the 2 volcanoes from Disneys lava. My son is non verbal/ non-communicative autistic and Moana and Lava calm him down when he’s having trouble regulating, he comes up and pulls my sleeve. So he can see it and just sings the song from Lava. Definitely one of new Disneys best
