Like for example, some of the songs are sang in Tokelauan language and the costumes has like a mixture of Samoan and Tongan traditional clothing..so its all blended together beautifully. And the character Maui has different interpretations and versions of him in every Polynesian culture.

there are even a few kiwi voice actors throughout the movie I notice straight away, like moana’s dad and the fisherman, even tamatoa- and as an australian the new zealand accent is even rly distinct from ours so not noticing it is interesting. may just be that kiwi actors get even less of a chance to use their real accents in mainstream hollywood films than us, so it isn’t recognised as kiwi in the US, etc.?

The black patch her and grandma were dancing on the beach was a patch of black lava called pahoehoe (sounds like pa-hoy-hoy). I'm crazy lucky to live Hawai'i Island and the islands are made out of 2 types of lava.. the smoother kind that flows out in layers of ropy sheets (like the piece they're dancing on), and the other is a'a (sounds like ah-ah). It's gnarly, sharp, jagged stuff. So some beaches have smoother pahoehoe on them, others the rougher a'a (that the ocean smooths out to some degree, over time).
Happy birthday Bryce! Love your guy's videos 🌴😎🤙

Pele and Maui are common in many Polynesian cultures. In Hawaii we are the Kanaka Maoli, and our language used to sound like the Kanaka Maori until the Missionaries came and changed our letters to represent K for T, L for R, to fit their printing of their bibles which then preached as their GOD that Hawaiians should listen to, and not their own. Our chicken is moa, like your huge flightless birds that became extinct. Our Pua'a is pig, like your poaka, while we use a glottal stop or 'okina to represent a missing consonant. You might still say Tahiti, while Hawaiians say Kahiki, you may say Tapa, but we say Kapa. You may say aroha, we say aloha.
I was told of New Zealand Maori elders who came to the Island of Hawai'i to the southern most point of the island, and they chanted a chant of where they came from. The came from a place called Hawaiki, where there were cliffs and mooring holes. If you go there, you will see the cliffs and the boulders along the shoreline that were drilled with holes in which to moor their canoes to. When the Maori elders saw these, they cried, as their chants were real, that they understood where they came from.

I did the same and am so happy to kind of felt heard / seen by this movie. The ending also always gets me. Losing a part of your heart can turn you in a completely different person and finding your way back to your old self can be so so hard. This movie is full of incredible meanings. It holds a special place in my heart ❤️
This was such a great pick, Bryce. Now your birthday is coming up again. Can't wait to see what you've chosen this year 🎉

My 45 year old self was obsessed with this movie when I saw it for the first time. Love the story and the songs, and the visuals are stunning. It's such a beautiful movie.

Moana is my favorite Disney movie now. Growing up it was the Little Mermaid. I have always been drawn to the ocean and the water. The love of the water, paired with love of family is perfection for me, plus I had a very special relationship with my Nan, so that always gets me. Tied up in a beautiful Lin-Manuel Miranda bow. :) His music is outstanding. I love every project he touches, and I am excited to see the new Little Mermaid when I can, but will need to wait until its streaming.

Pua was the cutest!! 🥰 I always wished he also went with Moana on her adventure so we could have seen more of him! 🐷💕 Shiny was my youngest sis fav song too!🤭 ...she demanded we set it as her alarm in the morning for school lol we woke up to Shiny every morning for months! 😅

The fact I love this movie so much:
    1. Moana is a girl boss!
    2. The sea and ocean animation is so amazing!
    3. All the songs are so good!
