  • Forage Harvesting Corn Silage in Kandiyohi County, Minnesota. Circa 1963
This is a capture of 8mm home movie film. No Sound!
The tractor on the chopper is a 1956 Minneapolis-Moline UB Diesel. Chopper is believed to be a New Holland, but could instead be a Gehl.
Farming neighbors coming together to help fill the silo.

That’s how we did it back in the 60s. Two row corn head. But I still say life was better back then.

It sure is. I wish my Dad had made more of these. He got a 8mm movie camera in I think '61. There are also very few, almost 0, pictures of farm work in the 60s-70s. Folks too busy to take the time I guess.

Oh to hear the sound of that UB on the chopper. I’ll bet that thing would make your chest pound in good corn.

That's about the same way we filled the silo a long time ago. The blower was run by a long belt with a single twist in it running off the belt pulley wheel on a Farmall H.

That’s just how we filled the silo, our wagons were a bit older and we had a electric motor mounted on a board and had to put a belt from it to the wagon, the weight of the motor kept the belt tight and there was a ratchet type thing on the wagon that would pull on a cable that pulled the front of the wagon to the back slowly. Had to man handle the front back when done. It was all work but we had a blast. It took about three days to fill a 16x40 silo. So glad someone had videos of that time. I also seen some videos of the pea viners back in the sixties but not of them cutting and loading the vines in the trucks. We raised peas and sweet corn for birdseye when we farmed by New Richland.

So many things about this video!
The less mess I made on the ground, the less I had to pick up with a silage fork back into the hopper. Gosh that silage was packed so tight at the back doors of the Dokken boxes!
Very neat. Thank you for transferring over to this format!

Yes, a tight pack when you opened the doors. Hard to get the silage started out the back w/o a huge wall of it coming out and crashing over the hopper into your legs and on the ground.

The UB was possibly the best tractor of the time. And Fox choppers would last forever.
