This is a Great video, reminds me of the old timers farming when i was a kid. I recently bought a 1977 2-105 and set of white 588 5 bottom plows and hope to make a field look as good as that one

DItto- cam sensor drive bearing caused this squeak on my sons F-150 2007;. Looking closely on the new oem drive housing, an unused and untapped boss indicates engineering specified a oil lube point for the shaft bearing; bean counters: "we can save 0.01343 cents per engine if we don't drill and tap that boss"..... and we will get to sell an overprices engine component in the future"....

These old instruments are an example of the quality of workmanship and design that made Tektronix oscilloscopes the standard of the industry. When I started out in college in electrical engineering in 1970, I save up enough money to purchase a used 545A and a CA plugin. To this day, I uses my 545A because it is a very easy to use even though I own more oscilloscopes than any sane person should have.

Actually I had one sitting on my desk next to my bed when I was a kid in the 60's. My parents bought it for me. Good clock radio. Brings back memories. I was in Okla. That knob at the bottom is the alarm. Also if you twist the bottom knob to the right it was a timer if you were listening to the radio while going to sleep, it would turn off automatically if the hour was up and you fell asleep it would automatically turn off. 🙂

I prefer using my 545B over my mid-1980's Leader. This fine piece of mid-century high-tech is still better to use than some later equipment, if you have the space for it of course. the large size and logical spacing of the dials is part of the pleasure in using it though. If it was all smaller it wouldn't be as good.

I was living in St. Cloud at the time. We ended up having a couple of people who were stranded at my husband's office stay with us for the weekend. They were rescued by snowmobile. Thankfully, we had electricity and heat. It took a long time to dig out afterwards. It started on Friday with rain, freezing rain, and sleet. The winds and drifts were tremendous, especially late Friday and early Saturday.

I had it and still working purchase in 1980 from scrap shop set it right

After over 50 years in the auto repair industry I have seen the distributor or sensor drive squeaking quite a few times. Other things I have come across are belts being too long even though the manufacturer will say they fit the application. If you can find a Goodyear belt for a squeaking belt problem it always took care of the problem. Most of all finding the problem first will save a lot of work and money.

I saw your video from 1993. That exact year my family and myself traveled from Texas to Minnesota as migrant workers. We used to stay at a site camp called Grass Camp. At the time I was 14 yrs old and was already working in the corn fields at 5am. I also worked in the asparagus fields. My mom and sisters worked at the canned corn factory. I’m not going to say I miss working in the field but would like to go back to Owatonna one day to see how much it has changed. And maybe go see if those camps still exist. We also went back in March through September of 1994.

I had a 545 of my own and I worked with them ...excellent scopes.

A rubidium oscillator is meant to be powered 24/7. The lock indicator is telling you when the oscillator is "Locked" and on frequency. This can takes up to 10 minutes, which is normal. Do not power it up for short periods of time, if you need the reference just let it run. They are meant to run for YEARS! You can frequency lock all your test equipment to it, which you should if it has external input. A wonderful find!

The model 6A looks like one we had back in the late 1970s, but I think ours was a model 300.

I have been cleaning a old farm site this spring too,helps that the scrape iron price is good now also i ran into some interesting artifacts from the old machine shed my Great Grandfather built in the early 1900s. Unfortunately with all the snow this year hard on the old roofs

That has got to be some pretty heavy soil to hold back a 105 pulling only five bottoms. In our light Michigan soil I could run away with six sixteens with a 2050 Oliver. Nice video. Brings back memories.

I remember as a kid being in the bin raking down corn@ 12-13 yrs old. My older sister had just come out and told dad lunch would be ready in 15 minutes. I took one more swipe with 4 prong rake and avalanched enough ears down to cover door by 3-4 feet !! We just kept shelling till I could skinny out the door. Wanna talk about being a wheel barrow full of A**holes for the rest of the day to all party's concerned. Then the rat/mouse killings at the end were always entertaining. Great times !!

Having the same issue with a 2003 5.9 Cummins, changed to a gates water pump, have used two new belts, one a Goodyear heavy duty and one Dayco, have used two new Dorman tensioners, two new idlers (one Dorman, one LITNS), changed Alternator, tried two new AC compressors, changed fan clutch which was bad, power steering was changed once, so I left that alone and the squeaking is not coming from that area, I’m going nuts and the squeaking is loud. Going to take the belt off and just run the engine to see if it stops and isolate the problem. One test I did was squirt water on the groove side of the belt and the squeaking stops, so many say it’s either the belt or pulley misalignment but I don’t see it…driving me nuts!..oh, I also changed the camshaft sensor bc I had an error code and that was fixed, I don’t show any codes….

Just going through the squealing belt thing on my 2000 E250 with 4.2L. Glad I came across this.

Found lab-grade hundreds-of-dollars worth precision equipment in e-waste! Wish I could get your kind of e-waste! 1PPS input is to hook to a GPS' 1PPS output, so for instance you can synchronise it to global UTC time. If it's working correctly the only way to check its accuracy is against a GPS signal averaged over many hours / days, or an actual atomic clock. Most higher end lab equipment that deals in time / frequency would have a 10Mhz reference signal to hook it up to, so from one clock all of your equipment becomes super accurate.

Those are priced way higher used than I thought, unreasonable high as well.

I'll second that emotion: you found gold there. This is absolutely the lowest-jitter reference clock in existence that doesn't cost as much as a house. They're still made now, and they still look exactly like that.

Very interesting! This is line frequency so it should be optimized for that. Very discouraging that an expensive name brand operates so poorly in this scenario. It is probably the high dc that is throwing it off but very disappointing. If you had not had it since new, I would think that somebody has hurt it somehow with high-voltage. But, HV usually causes actual damage where it doesn’t work as well as a did. Also in manual range it worked fine in the 100 range which was probably needed because of the peak to peak values.

My Agilent does the exact same thing. I bought it used and thought it might have an issue. My Fluke 189, 115 no problem. My Brymen 869s, 525, 235, no problem. Everyone of my quality DMM’s have no issues with that and even my budget meters are fine. Just the Agilent, it is quirky on resistance at times too. I went in and added some shielding thinking maybe some external noise could be messing with it. Helped a bit but not that issue. I like the Agilent but it is glitchy sometimes.

It would be interesting to compare the 1242 to a VTVM with a high impedance AC input... Not sure you have one of the older VTVM... Also, it would be nice to check out the capacitor checker a bit more.. As someone already mentioned, those BLACK BEAUTY capacitors must go.. But you can check those black beauty caps if you have a different Cap / Leakage checker for testing.. Robert

@32:25 For the Short Test to work, you must have switch "D" set to "H-K" (fully clockwise). Also, those black capacitors are Sprague "Black Beauty" caps; notorious for going bad. They definitely should be replaced, no questions asked, and they're sitting all over that power supply section. @26:33 - that 0.02µF Black Beauty cap is across the AC line and chassis ground, and is likely leaking AC to the chassis. They're just old-style wax-and-paper caps, encapsulated in plastic, in hopes that it'll keep moisture out, but eventually they just break down anyway. Assume they're bad and replace every one of 'em. Good luck!

I have a suggestion: @2:04 on the slide-out Quick Operation Guide, Section 5.3, it says to be sure to adjust the Eye Sensitivity control if the eye's response is "broad or critical", which it seemed to be on a few of those caps. I'd try re-measuring those caps while messing with that control. It also mentions using the Power Factor control if the eye tube seems "fuzzy", which is something I tend to forget when measuring electrolytics on my Sprague capacitor analyzer (I have an earlier, broadly similar model, the Sprague TO-5 "Tel-Ohmike", but it has far fewer adjustments and a much simpler DC voltage source circuit, without the voltage regulator tubes. In fact I believe it only has three tubes, including the eye tube.) I betcha that thing works a whole lot better when those controls are adjusted.
