  • In Wuppertal Zoo, you can frequently see peccaries with offspring. Philipp J. Kroiss, editor-in-chief of zoos.media, introduces us to these interesting Tayassuidae.
Scientifically, the species is called Pecari tajacu. The specific epithet tajacu is one of the names for the animal in the language of the Tupi people. This was one of the largest ethnic groups in Brazil before the colonial era and they dominated the entire Atlantic coast at the time of the Conquista. However, the distribution area extends even further: from the southwestern USA via Central America to the Río de la Plata in Argentina, South America.
The enormous adaptability allows the species to adapt to a wide variety of habitats. Therefore, it survives quite well and is not listed as threatened. However, it is necessary, and this is how the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) also sees it, that the status of all populations is monitored, as the ongoing loss of habitat and the possibly too intensive hunting could soon make a different classification necessary.
Therefore the successful breeding, which Philipp Kroiss reports on in this video, could really pay off a lot for the conservation of species. However, the peccaries are also ambassadors for biodiversity and therefore also important for the education of visitors. In addition, the youngsters, in particular, are unbelievable to look at.

Successful breeding is also very important for the well-being of the animals, as it enables them to live out their natural behavior. You can see that the animals in Wuppertal, Germany, are doing really good when you watch them spending time together.
