Super Rusted Antique Hand Pump - Will it work again? - Restoration
Hi guys! How are you doing?
In this video i show you how to restore a Super Rusted Antique Hand Pump.
This tool used to be sold in Tools stores and markets, and was used to fill bike tires.
I unfortunately could not find any information about the brand that produces this Hand Pump.
So, to begin the restoration i disassemble with a screwdriver, a plier and a wrench, to make this process more easier i used my vise to hold the pump.
After the disassemble done i washed all parts to remove all the dust and oil on the surfaces of the pieces.
I removed some sharpen edges with a file.
And with all the parts cleaned is time to remove the rust, i used hot water with hydrochloric acid to give a nice clean on the rusted parts.
Now i sanded the body of the pump with the lathe, i used the 120G to 600G to make a nice finish.
To give some shiny finish on the parts i wheel brush them.
With all parts nice and shiny i made a bath to nickel plate all the parts, the process was made to give protection from rust.
After all the parts nickel plated i polish some of them just to make more shiny.
Now is time to make a new leather piece, i just used a piece of leather and cuted it, i put in hot water to make more soft and make a hole with a drill.
With the leather part resting to take the right shape, i started to restore the wood handle.
I just sand with 120G to 380G and with a steel wire i made the burned marks, i also moisturized the handle with olive oil.
I had to make a new Wood cover on the lathe.
I stained the wood cover to match the handle.
Now all parts are done, is time to assemble.
To assemble i just used the same tools, a wrench and a screwdriver.
To fix the handle i used super Glue. I also replaced the missing part. And is Done.
The final product turned out well and very usefull. But it is very tiring to use hehe'

Nice! I love the new wooden end piece you made, though I'm convinced your neighbor's desk may be missing part of its leg after you perminitely borrowed it 😆

If you would have soaked the leather in water first it should form to look just like the one you replaced
Enjoyed your video and I gave it a Thumbs Up

You have to invest in one of those lasers that takes rust away.

I think sandblaster will be enough hehe'.
      Lasers are very expensives tools.

When you’re showing the sand paper you’re not even showing the back of the grit, you’re just showing the front like look “ it’s sandpaper” lol good work though

Will the olive oil go off after a while?

    • @WorkshopDC

If you want a better protection, you can put carnaúba wax after the oil dries.
