If I had to say one thing. A "flex" is good at most weapons. But being good at one weapon in every class to me is what I call a "joker" and it absolutely while not the most optimal is definitely rewarding to feel like you make progress and all you needed to do was switch it up for the day. Some days I do stamper, some I do Nova and some I do flingza, etc. It depends on what feels good that day

as a low level player who plays everything from the dapples to the e-liter, choosing a main is really hard! they're all fun and i'd rather change up my play style than play something that got boring 100 hours ago. i do agree with everything in this video, in theory at least, but having fun with the game is definitely more important to me than getting wins.

Absolutely true, this is something I hope viewers of this channel realize.
A lot of what this channels talks about only really applies to a very small percentage of players, and anyone who isn't able to dedicate their whole life into this game shouldn't take these lessons too seriously.
If you're playing for fun with randoms, *any* weapon is viable as long as you find it fun.

The best advice I here from top player is really 'play what you enjoy' Especially in solo queue. Are there meta picks? Absolutely, and they can be fun to mess around with. . .but if you absolutely like the Undercover Brella (I'm sorry) then go have fun with the silly brella! Personally I switch things up a lot messing around in turf. Sometimes I wish I could apologize to team mates when I drag out a weapon I never touch (the other day I again attempted to learn E-Liter. . I'm horrible with chargers). Today I randomly picked up sloshing Machine and realized in one match that I should have picked it up way sooner but I always heard the learning curve on it was super steep.

I always get a bit burned out right before splatfests and then use splatfest to just play a lot of different fun weapons because my main isn't great on turf, but I'm starting to get back into the swing of things and the biggest thing I had to learn was not to just play other weapons when it wasn't my perfect rotation. I just play every rotation with my main and it's helped me improve a LOT.
If I trust my skills in the map mode for series, I just play series, but if I'm unsure about it, instead of just switching weapons, I just play open for that rotation, and it helps me improve with my weapon without having to risk points or worry about wins/losses

Also a bit after chill season started, I can really see the letter ranks tell more about what skill level you are at. B was hard before but definitely worth a B rank now, and A gets tougher but still not as difficult as B before chill season (it's not just me getting better I had splat 2)

Flash forward to Splatoon 3, I’ve recently beaten a full playthrough as Mechromancer in Borderlands 2 for switch, and I start with my usual aerospray, before trying out Dapple Dualies, and omfg I loved ‘em instantly. They played very similarly to how Aerospray felt, with the added maneuverability & improved aim of the dodge rolls, and from that point on, the game opened up to me.
I still have a rather unique, close-range playstyle with Stick Aim (can’t do motion) but I’ve been experimenting with weapons a lot more, and it’s been really fun. I really enjoy both Dapples sets quite a bit, the Splat Jrs are Incredibly fun, especially on Zones, I’ve discovered the magic of the inkbrush & binchslapping someone to death with one, I’ve even tried experimenting with the Tri-Slosher as another QR Slayer, and the tri-stringer as an interesting foray into backlining - And even picked up the TTek, Hero Shot & Splash to experiment with Better Aim at more normal gameplay ranges

I'd recommend just choosing a main weapon for competitive with a 2nd choice off-main. These will be your main weapons you'll use most of the time. When playing non-competitive games or fun games, it's very important to learn all the weapons. This will help you greatly, by knowing where a good enemy will stand when using a weapon. I added inbrush, Carbon deco, octobrush and lately range Blaster in my agressive tool box
My support one well... I can play Tentatek and tried Splash and I can support with that, I just don't like feeling passive or vulnerable.
I can snipe but it's only when I can rely on my team and well... I can't really in solo queue

This all makes sense in concept to me. However, I'm having the problem of my Carbon Deco game just isn't running as smoothly as I want. I like the playstyle of sneaking around and getting kills, but especially right now, when I've got no team and am playing through solo queue, I'm struggling to find the right openings to get those sneak attack kills because I can't communicate with my team, however I don't want to give up on the play style just because solo queue doesn't fit it.
I have also liked playing vanilla Splattershot and have generally seen better results playing that, but I think it's because I'm not quite as reliant on my teammates to distract the enemies.

I have a problem... I main a few different weapons but several of them vary in playstyle and in mechanical skill. If I picked 4, they would be Ballpoint, Hydra, Wiper, and Rapid Blaster. Of those, only the ballpoint and hydra have significant similarities. I also do play as a flex sometimes - able to play most shooters, blasters, and the tri stringer. I don't know how to start limiting myself while still having *fun* with the game. A lot of what Splatoon is to me is all the unique weapon choices, but I'm also looking to break into competitive. Any suggestions?

    • @Ryansheep
      @Ryansheep Před rokem +5

As someone who duo mains Hydra and Dapple Dualies, I personally think that if your weapons vary completely in playstyle then it works out because its so different that the mechanical skill from one to the other physically cannot trip you up because your head will be in a completely different space. For me, going between them helps me to understand the strategy because as a Dualie, I know where the backliner is not going to expect me, and as a backliner, I know where the slayer is going to sneak around to come at me.
That said, I have not really seen anyone else say to pick two mains opposite each other, and Squid School recommends sticking to one class. I think that you should not have to give up any of your weapons, but rather think of it as focusing on one or two of them. Because in the end, you will not be transferring the skills of your class differences. You will have the strategy advantage, but if you focus on one or two weapons, then you can get that skill level up. And then, if weapons get patched or buffed or whatever, or maybe another weapon clicks with your competitive team really well, you can go back to them.

Since I primarily play in turf war & haven't touched ranked since Splatoon 2 was somewhat new, I probably don't have advice that helps out many people but I have been playing ever since late 2015 so speaking on my weapon choices throughout the years might help people consider stuff but applying that to however they work might not transfer over well? I don't know, I just want to share my experience with weapons & hope someone learns something from me & if anyone actually reads past the first paragraph & is open for giving me advice, I always love receiving it.
When I started playing Splatoon, it was around December 2015, I had just moved back in with my parents right around the beginning of fall due to rent being too high & could actually afford a WiiU since I didn't have rent, woo! I got the Black Friday edition because it already had Splatoon on it & that was my reason for getting a WiiU in the first place. I was so excited to get started & because we had to deal with the Splatershot Jr. in the beginning, it felt natural to stick to shooters although I did get experimental, I ended up maining a shooter, the N-Zap 89.
So I found out what I like doing most in the game, inking turf. I know right, not like that's the concept or anything. Joking aside, I definitely enjoyed being a more supportive role, I loved just spreading ink & I also appreciated mobility like there was a point when if I was too slow, I'd freak out. Another thing I discovered about how I play is that I like trolling chargers like I absolutely hated them because they'd always know where I was & how to stop me & for a bit, I tried running Ninja Squid so I could slip past by swimming in my ink & I don't like being slower so that caused a lot of trouble for me but then I found out, just troll the chargers, if you play hard to hit & they want to get you, they'll focus on your instead of your teammates so I did a lot of that in the first game.
Another thing I loved was finding fun spots to put my sprinkler, heck, there's this video I remember watching years ago where it showed good spots to place a sprinkler & sometimes when I see those places on maps, I remember the video fondly, heck, I can't remember who uploaded it, was too long ago. The sprinkler actually did something in the first game, it was so satisfying to be laying some ink down, no enemy team in sight, & then getting the notification that you splatted someone. Oh! Speaking of splatting people from afar, ink strike, LOVE it! It taught me how to read the map like I was able to figure out where people are by watching ink spread on my game pad, back when you had that option, I'd often times try my best to pay attention to it when I could to get an idea on positions so I knew where to fire my ink strikes.
Alright so I explained a little bit on how I played the 89, I didn't even go into explanation on how I use to use the sprinklers as decoys so it'd give me a free hit on the enemy team. One thing about how I play is that I like knowing the positions of the enemy team. Mobility & getting to know others' positions were big for me so I did play into that with other weapons I chose to play. I probably played the Carbon Roller Deco almost as much as I did the N-Zap 89, my favorite sub weapon was the Seeker because it could sniff out the opposing team for me & charge at them & even if they were able to avoid my seekers, I knew their location which was all I needed. I did laugh maniacally when launching my seeker bomb rush, yes. Also love the speed of the carbon roller, splatting enemies was never my main objective so it having less power than a roller never bothered me, I love just being able to get around & knowing where the enemy was assisted me greatly in either avoiding them, relaying that knowledge to my teammates when I was in a call with them, or taking them out myself of which I did do if I had to.
Another weapon that played into my style was the Tri Slosher Nouveau, it had seekers & echolocator so the seekers helped with mobility & sniffing out the enemy while echolocator would just flat out tell me where they were. Seekers are still my favorite sub, I like the auto bomb & the torpedo but man, seekers were the full package, mobility that curling bombs give & can sniff out the enemy? I miss them. I also learned how to use sloshers because of this weapon, it's helped me change how I play a little but I can't slosh too much due to thumb cramps.
In Splatoon 2, I tried out the N-Zap 85 as soon as I unlocked it & eh, it was alright. Played in a way I can appreciate since I enjoy support, most aggressive I ever got in the first game was when I was using the Carbon Roller Deco & laughing as if I just conquered the world when launching out my seeker rush so being support is fine by me, I like the 85 in the second game but I didn't love it.
Due to trying different things, I actually found appreciation for the roller, the curling bomb giving mobility was a huge plus for me. Sometimes I used the Krak-On Splat Roller because kraken is fun but I didn't like how slow it was. In the second game, if I was using the roller & wanted more mobility, curling bomb was my friend.
With playing the splat roller, I then decided to give the Sploosh-O-Matic a shot & dang, I LOVED it! It was probably my secondary main, right behind the 89. Gave me mobility with the curling bomb & the ink spread is so nice. I didn't like it in the first game because I didn't care for how it didn't have much range but I learned how to use it in the second. This is where I ended up becoming more territorial of the middle like typically, I was super mobile & liked just getting everywhere & inking those spots but with playing Sploosh, I became more aggressive somewhat. I still swam around & made sure the map was inked & I usually held onto my splashdown in case I was being attacked but I'd always keep an eye of the middle of the map & if I notice the enemy overtaking it, I'd jump to a teammate over in the middle if I had splashdown & fired my special as I was jumping in & then work to defend the middle until it was safe to move away. This actually helped lead into a play style I lean into a lot in the third game.
The 89 in the second game had exactly what I needed although I felt so dirty playing missiles so I didn't use it as often as I would of liked. Yeah, the kit gave me ways to target down the enemy & I love how it plays, I just didn't use it as much as I would of liked because it just felt too easy & it made it kinda dull sometimes. It's perfect for me but at the same time, I just didn't want to use it as much, I still did but I kinda got turned off of playing Splatoon as a whole because of the 89. That & Pokemon games coming out on the Switch killed my desire to play more Splatoon 2, maybe had more to do with that.
In the third game, I started out with the 85 & I loved it at first but I just got tired of it so I tried out so many different things. 89 still isn't back yet, boo! I'm kinda hoping on the 89 having triple ink strike, it will be different from how it was in the first game but I just want to be reunited with my first main, alright?
The Bloblobber. I didn't like playing it in the second game because I didn't understand it but playing it in the third actually helped me out. I'd get claustrophobic on some of these maps & hated the spots where it got narrow but playing the Bloblobber helped me out with that, something about setting up a sprinkler & lobbing blobs down those paths is just soothing. Also, I ran thermal ink so I always knew where the enemy was since my blobs would reach them.
Sploosh, I did not like ultra stamp for the longest time but I enjoyed sploosh in the second game so much, I learned how to use stamp just so I could wreck with Sploosh in the third game & somehow, playing this weapon with like barely any range at all, I became so much more aggressive. Curling bomb would get me in fast & then I'd stamp once I was in position to. I even learned about tossing stamp effectively, I once hit a guy out of the air that was using ink jet with my stamp, it was awesome! This helped me get a taste for blood.
There's so many more weapons I can touch on like I did go back to Tri Slosher in later games but this is super long so I'll go ahead & wrap up with highlighting the weapon I currently default to. Custom Splatershot Jr. Oh my goodness, this thing is amazing! The defending the middle thing I learned from playing Sploosh in 2, I apply it here in the third game with the Custom Jr. & dang, it feels so good! I'm constantly aware of my enemies' positions & I try my best to not let a leak through. Since I wasn't aggressive for the longest time, I am still not the best at that like my aim sucks, alright? Still, I do my best & have so much fun playing this thing. Its kit is probably my favorite kit ever, well, other than Carbon Roller Deco in the first game, hard to beat Seekers & MORE SEEKERS! I get crazy when it comes to Seekers, alright? If I could main a sub weapon, it'd be seekers, I'd just play every weapon that has Seekers. I do love the kit they gave Custom Jr. even if people don't like Torpedo, I still do since even when it's shot down, it still gives you information & for people who are hit with your wavebreaker & aren't paying attention, a Torpedo can even take them out, need the stars to align properly for that sometimes but it's happened before.
Sorry that was long, I know I'm not a great player, I do what I can to add to the team, playing to my strengths, but as someone who likes trying out a wide range in weapons yet know how I like playing, this is information I can provide.

If you practice a weapon a ton, there might be so many things you do automatically and some of them you might have to unlearn those if those are bad habits of you. Punk in SFV for example can win with just about everybody in the cast, and I think knowing the opponent's character well give you a good feel for the things they want to do, situations they feel uncomfortable in, etc. Smash has a million characters so it's less viable, but I think you always risk putting your eggs in one basket -- especially in while a game is getting patched regularly.

Gonna be honest, I have played Inkbrush for about 400 hours now exclusively and I haven't really found another weapon that matches the playstyle yet: I don't need to aim, I can run very quickly on any ink including uninkable surfaces which offers unique flanks other weapons can't do (ex. the side grates on mincemeat near spawn), requires a lot of mashing, and extremely short range. I think my biggest flaw is definitely my aim, I've always had poor aim in every shooter I play, which is why I play Inkbrush in the first place, and I've played Inkbrush so long, I no longer know how to aim with gyro controls and switching off into a shooter throws me off a lot.
I have heard seen that Carbon Deco seems to play somewhat similarly to Inkbrush so I might give that a try, or an Octobrush, but alas...I wish there were more brushes too.

I picked up Dapples back in A in my Splatoon 2 days, and have brought them all the way up to Splatoon 3 X 2150avg (2400 on blitz), but I am hitting a wall there that I am beginning to think is weapon based. I have learned hydra and e-liter for competitive, and despite knowing that my personal skillset in these weapons is far lesser, I am winning just as much. In fact, when I'm looking at my strategy for dapples in solo que, I am almost always doing the objective because I am so movement based (I am best at clam blitz; I'm the one getting clams, causing skirmishes, getting openings for my team. I often lost battles just because of range, and though I've learned how to close the distance, it's rough). I know I can keep moving my backlining skills up and I intend to continue doing so, but it's so frustrating when my main leaves me doing worse. I tried tetras, but I hate how slow they are, so I'm hoping to combine my backline skills with my dualie dodge skills and learn regular dualies, but realizing your main may not be the best anymore is rough.

Im curious how one would PICK a good pool tbh? I gravitate towards short-range Slaying weapons (usually carbon deco, but also tried Luna) but I'm unsure what other weapons would be good to learn in that pool?

Splash is always decent (even tho' I hate the crab tank meta), Sloshers tend to be really good if you like playing a little more sneaky but still up close, even brushes can scratch the close range game at least. Luna can be fun, but its definitely a 'better learn effective range' with the blasters.

what's it called if you can play most weapons in a class, like if you get really good at splatlings and just play that, would that be a solo main, or the amount of splatlings there are?

I played a lot of Brella in Splatoon 2, but in Splatoon 3 it was holding me back so I dropped it. What weapons are similar that I could play?

At the beginning of the game I actually didn't like the batch of weapons. I picked up Wiper as a joke novelty and now it's almost 5*.
At this point I've picked up a dive-heavy Wiper/Tetra/TTek role with a few older picks like Mini and Naut because of Splat 2 muscle memory.

Generally agree with the "solo main for a while" approach. Back in splatoon 2 I mostly used various splattershot pro variants up until x rank, and similarly in splatoon 3 I've been mostly sticking with the splattershot junior and am at s+0. Now I've been branching out a bit more, including trying some of the slosher category because I'm actually enjoying them this time round.
I feel most comfortable with something mid range that's good at painting with a bomb. If anyone want to throw out suggestions I'll take them on board.

I'm stuck on Inkbrush, it's actually the only weapon I use and I'm terrified the moment I go into practice mode with anything else, I am just so deeply in love with it and while I wish I could have another weapon in my pool I'm very enthralled with being the absolute best Inkbrush I can 🐙

Hey, brush is good for Zones at least. Try going into sloshers for a semi-similar play experience if you want to change it up.

      I have this crippling issue.
I also main inkbrush, and I can't stop.
I change weapons for a game after feeling bored, and after a match or two I have a craving for my inkbrush again
      Its a vicious cycle:
Use brush nonstop, get bored and change, crave brush again, return to brush, Use brush nonstop, etc.
I can only use other weapons during Salmon Run without the inkbrush craving returning

@@arctohru I got out of the brush struggle bus by using the Ttek and REEFLUX. Try those. If that doesn't work, maybe try the story mode again? Idk man, whatever works for you.

I have given up hope and gone all in on using brushes.
I endlessly use brushes and have become a force of chaos on the battlefield
Aim is no longer a concern, the brush defeats all when in range.
      Missiles can be simply outran.
Turf can be painted in immense speed.
Kraken means nothing when it cannot touch me.
Snipers are unable to defend themselves when i am already in attacking range.
I have become the Brush main.
And yet, no longer are there obstacles in my path, all challanges have been negated by the brush.
Truly, this is the peak of the Brush Main's lifecycle.
