these are all her points simplified
    1. some people pick things up very quickly, don't compare your progress to someone's else. It ruins the process of learning how to skate. Everyone is on their own journey
    2. roller skating is hard on your body, you are gonna be tired. Its also pretty dangerous. Don't feel bad that you sore and think your bad, your unlocking new muscles so give it time. also, YOU HAVE TO FALL. its part of learning to skate
    3. TAKE VIDEOS OF YOURSELF. it will help you realize what your doing wrong, and it will be good for you to look back on your progress.
    4. use social media to help you learn. there are several tutorials, watch the same skill from different creators so you will understand it better. Also, most of skating is up to preference, don't stress to much if you don't do it the 'correct' way, do what makes you comfortable. also, slow down peoples videos and try to figure it out that way
    5. the skate community is the best. you can find amazing people. open your self up to meeting new people and making the most of your new skill, you will be surprised what it can do.
    hope this helps someone :))

I've been seeing videos floating around on CZcams lately about people learning how to roller-skate in a really short time and that really had me comparing my process to theirs because I'm taking longer due to a lot of personal reasons. I'm happy that there are people learning at a fast pace because it's cool to watch an entertaining, but I need to get out of the habit of comparing myself and my journey to theirs. Thank you so much, Rebel!

Definitely same! I think something that's also a double edge sword is the Moxi 365 skate challenge. It's amazing that people are trying to skate everyday but that's just not in the cards for me. I keep having to remind myself that if I only practice a few times in the week that it's just as valid as someone who skates every day. Good luck on your skate journey!!

  • @PhoenixPerryisawesome
    @PhoenixPerryisawesome Před 3 lety +5

Everything she says here is exactly right and tracks for any sport. The other thing I would say is that your core really matters. Your inner thighs matter. Do that work off your skates and you fall less, perhaps. I have spent the last 25 years of my life in yoga and PT because I have serious body issues (I’m disabled) and I have yet to fall. I don’t know what magic charm it is, but I think I have just learned how to not fall upside down and how to catch myself before I fall most times in weird poses. I’m positive I am in for it at some point, but the basics all came to me with no drama. At the core of that is my core and knowing to bend my knees and tuck into my middle. Are you winded? Knees. Tired? Knees. Dizzy? Knees. About to tip? Knees. If you’re tired, stop. It’s ok. You’ll mess yourself up if you push. Also, maybe try to do pilates, yoga, or some other core work before going out to wake that part of your body up. Leg lifts will keep your hips from hating you. I’m doing more off my skates now than on them so when I go out, I’m safe and I don’t hurt something. This might be the only time in my life where being as broken as I am has paid off. 😂 For what it’s worth, my core routine is the Core Ritual by Adriane(sp?) here on CZcams.

5:08 - No truer words have ever been said. Skating 47 years now...STILL can't do a transition! LOL I do jump turns...which actually scares a LOT of people who've been skating for decades. My first time doing the jump was...well, it's a long story...but it's all I've ever known/done to go backwards. Still working on the jump from backwards to forwards, been doing it for almost 3 years, but I have only been *really* improving my speed when doing it in only the last 5-6 months or so...so I'm getting there. Go at YOUR pace...no one else's...you'll get to where you want to be as long as you keep at it! There is no "time table" to skating.

Hi Rebel im still learning to skate again at 48 been 3 times im loving it but I have my wheels tightened so I'm not gliding fast
Im finding im comparing myself to others at the rink why can't I skate as good as them I did fall the first time and it really hurt fell on right elbow and thigh now I have eva foam padding in my Lycra shorts being not small i cannot for the life of me get hard knee pads so have the padded knee sleeves do have hard wlbow pads and wrist guards problem is after falling once its always in my mind about falling
I watch the little kids they don't think about it they fall they get back up and keep going
I want to loosen my wheels but I feel they go too fast and lose my confident so I do skate but im not gliding fast with ease
I love my skates I have crazy skayes glam purple and hold silver impalas im not interested in speed skating but I want to beable to sjate freely at the rink and go outdoors
After listening to you I feel better I won't get so down and expect so much too soon
I do share with my friends on Facebook everytime I go and get encouragement and I have to say everyone at the skating rink here in Perth Western Australia are fantastic always so encouraging its great
Now just to stop pressuring myself too much lol
Can I ask is it easier to skate outdoors than on a skating rink

I was first introduced to roller skating when I was like 4 years old it was my older sisters friends birthday and my dad was able to convince my mom to let us try it our roller rink has a wall that goes completely around it and a little beginner floor that has a actual railing so my dad took me and my twin over to the beginner rink while my mom was taking pictures of my sister skating with her friends we were shuffling around the little rink until my twin fell my dad went to check them over and I happened to see my brother and sister go by in the big rink and decided that they wanted me to go over and skate with them so I managed to shimmy over to the door and since the main floor was carpet I was able to actually walk for the most part by now my dad has figured out I’m gone but I was already at the opening of the big rink they were skating close to the middle so off I went barreling as fast as my little baby feet would go and then I fell and couldn’t get up cause I didn’t grasp that since wheels were on my feet that I couldn’t use them to get up my brother made it over to me and helped me up him and his friend helped me skate to where my sister and the rest of the older kids were skating after letting my dad know I was ok he showed me how to move my feet and they helped catch me when I fell since then I’ve bugged my parents about going to the skating rink almost every other day and thanks to TikTok I found the skating community and also found out you can skate on sidewalks and blacktop! I always thought skating outside of a skating rink was illegal since my brother would always talk about having to out run cops so they wouldn’t take his skate board lol but anyway I have som second hand great that I got from my moms ex roller derby Freind and I’m going to try and find a skate park or a park that has pavement this week :)

I’m going to be 64 so I don’t want to be falling. But want to improve balance. I got padded
shorts, helmet, wrist guards, etc. So I found skates under $100.

I learned basics really fast but Idk what to learn anymore so Ive just been kinda perfecting what I do know. Like shooting the duck and a 180 off a mini curb. I dont have a real curb to practice on hehe. I cant spin easily or a lot though because I got gummy wheels.

Hey, I have a question. I have a pair of impalas and I recently changed the wheels to Atom Pulse Wheels which are 65mm. The problem is that now the toe stops are too high and I'm having trouble getting used to using the toe stops, especially since they are not adjustable. I can't use the wheels the impalas came with because they're too hard and small for the streets here in my neighborhood so I really don't know what to do because I still don't know how to stop. My house is kind of on a hill, so I'm afraid I'm going to hurt myself badly. Do you have any ideas or recommendations on what I should do? This is a question for anybody.

maybe try the radar energy wheels the 57 mm ones? or even the beach bunny wheels? Both of those wheels are outdoor wheels and are smaller.

@@keefkocaine8121 yes the Radar Energy wheels are awesome for outdoors and the 57’s should be good for the bolt on toe stop. Ultimately if you ever decide to change skates an adjustable toe stop would allow more versatility. Also working on other ways to stop may help make you more comfortable because then you will have options because even with an adjustable toe stop it may not always be practical to stop that way. Don’t forget to wear your safety gear. Good luck and keep skating!

@@rochellemurrell4146 Also do the radar energy 57mm wheels work well on horribly rough roads and streets? The streets in my neighborhood are terrible which is why I got the Atom Pulse wheels originally.

  • @taraelizabethdensley9475

I spent 20 minutes just trying to stand up on my skates yesterday, most of the time I was falling on my ass, and once on my arm. Had all my safety gear on, but my arm still hurts today. I'll be back out today for my 2nd day of trying

I'm a new skater, and pretty old at 47. I suck at it and am too embaressed to go outside where i have some decent room to practice, so i practice in the house in the hall. I wish i wasn't so ashamed at sucking so much. The thought of people seeing me skate so badly makes me feel sick. Especially when the online videos are full of young girls in booty shorts. Gah!

    • @avil7621

Personally I think you’re pretty bad ass for picking up skating at 47! Everyone starts off as a beginner, everyone starts off “sucking”. It’s okay to suck! Embrace the suck. It’s not every day that we decide to try something new and be strong enough to pick a new hobby. Keep at it!!
