  • Hey friends, ever wonder how to make those nice neat ends on your climbing rope. Well here is how! If you get a bad gash on your rope you wont need to throw it out. Just chop the rope to a new length and use this technique to finish it off.

    If you wrap the rope really tight with duct tape, make your cut though the middle of the tape and leave it on while you melt the ends it wont mushroom at all.

    • @RoderickGI
      @RoderickGI Před 3 lety +2

      I would use heat shrink rather than tape, then leave the heat shrink in place. Plastic tape tends to melt at a much lower temperature than heat shrink, and wouldn't hold the rope end as well. I might even try a foil tape over the top of the heat shrink to really get a flat (thin) end on the rope, then remove the foil tape once the rope has cooled of course.
      Also, as others have said, I would use a hot knife rather than flame, so that the rope doesn't burn as the climbing rope did. A burnt rope (nylon) is brittle, so the end will fail again quickly. A melted rope end shouldn't be brittle.
      I was hoping for a really good video on how to redo climbing rope ends. This wasn't it. :(

      @@RoderickGI You must try it man, what do you describe doesn't happen, with climbing tape (or duct tape) is enough for the tip of the rope

      I did the same thing but with a ziptie. Cut the zip tie when done. You can pull the ziptie really tight with pliers by rotating for leverage.

    I have an old paring knife that I heat up in the flame of a gas range burner or camp stove until it's red hot and then use to cut the end off ropes. Works just like one of those rope cutters they have at shops for cutting lengths off a spool and leaves a nice clean end!

    Interesting stuff. The rods they have at gyms work great, especially when you live in a country without barely any gas stoves.

    Hey Josh, I have a Beal Top Gun Dry Cover 10.5mm laying here. I used the cord for my work. Now my question, some pieces have industrial paint spilled on them, would that paint get through to the core of the rope? Could I still use the rope or is it suicide ..... Thanks in advance.

    Tape the end hard, cut it, melt it hard, press against a hard surfase, done.
    That's how you get the all strains melted together.
    Remember to not remove the tape, leave it there.

    I like to get a thin metal scraper or putty-knife, heat it with a propane torch till it’s a nice hot cherry red, then press it into the climbing rope on some concrete or asphalt. Boom! Done! Cuts and melts simultaneously.

    Hi you can also put a knife blade on the fire, when the blade is red hot you cut your rope, like that you melt the core with the cover of rope ! Not sur about the words, I'm French !
    In this way you cut like if you had a real rope cutter.

    The best way to do this is get a blade attachment for a solder gun, and it will cut the rope as well as seal it. I'm not a climber but a sailor. The fumes from burning nylon are also quite toxic, and melted nylon on skin is a horrible burn. Be safe and do it outdoors with the solder gun blade every time.

    • @BetaClimbers
      @BetaClimbers  Před 3 lety

      That’s a really neat trick I have to give that one a try.
      I think fumes from melted nylon are safe enough. It's a polyamide, consisting only of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen and nitrogen. The fumes aren't toxic, but if they irritate your throat and lungs by all means use a ventilator I definitely should have mentioned that. Some times common sense isn’t so common so Thanks for that!

    1. Use a sharp knife not a scissor cut gently 2. Better use something else and not your finger to push down the hot surface best something thats flat and can be pushed a bit harder
