Carving a beautiful handrail for Victorian stairs

- Just throwing together a nice handrail for my 160 year old stairs.
I mentioned in the video that it would originally have had a very basic handrail here, but this is just an assumption, none existed when we bought the house and when I stripped this wall back to the masonry I didnt see any evidence of fixings etc so it may well have not had any rail at all! There is a very basic handrail going into the cellar, so it seems strange to skimp on one for this staircase.

I have been doing wood work and furniture restoring for years. But when I saw those crazy angles and saw just how easily you coped and transcribed it all I just wanted to crawl into a corner and start hitting nails into a bit of wood while I mumbled softly to myself. Truly awesome job.

as a joiner from Yorkshire , i can honestly say this channel is awesome and refreshing , i watch a lot of joinery /carpentry vids and its hard to find the wheat amongst the chaff , the style in which your videos are made and the workmanship are pure class , don't change either .This channel is going to get big ..

Sinking the plywood pucks into the drywall is something I wouldn't have thought of, but makes complete sense. Awesome job!

I literally watched it being made and I still can't believe it!. The fact that you got all those measurements and angles and it fit when you brought it to the house amazes me. I would have been back and forth to the house a million times double checking everything and test fitting! Ha

Yes there is one Canadian that is watching. I am totally captivated because I worked for a stair company and I carved a few climbing volutes in my days. I am now retired but not dead yet. Beautiful craftmanship .

Mate I cannot tell you how impressed I am. I'm a boat builder and your use of patterns and projected lines filled me with joy and there were so many times when I was applauding your work. That bandsaw jig was something special and I know one day in the future with the right project I'll make my own version. I dream of having a shop like yours with all those finely tuned vintage machines. I've got nothing else to say but keep up the good work you know you're doing.

my farther was a joiner a very skilled one, on a sideline he made long case clocks in beautiful mahogany, he always wanted me to learn joinery, but at the time was not interested being only 15 years old, sadly he died at the age of 38 years, and when i think back, i wish i had listened, i am 50 years old and there is not a day i don't think about him, love your attention to detail, the banister was a work of art

This takes wood working to a hole other scale. That corner should make everyone insane. To figure out all this angles makes it near to impossible to figure out. Impressive job. Very interesting to see. And what a beautiful handrail 😍

I wondered how you were going to account for the shortening of the rail when you move it 2 inches from the wall, but the secret was how you finished with the wreath! Excellent work all around!

Carving on the tricky transition piece reminded me of boat school tricks. There we were taught how to divide the sides of square sectional stock into thirds to shape a tapered mast. I suspect some boatwright influence. beautiful work, excellent presentation. Thanks.

As an architect who has lived in Victorian buildings, I have always wondered how the handrails were formed with such complicated geometry. Now I know. Thanks for posting.

All this measuring and angles is doing my head in. I have a condition almost like a form of dyslexia, which makes it very difficult to orient direction and visualise things. This handrail and the stairs are gorgeous.
The war of the roses is forgotten as you have a Lancashire lad watching and liking what a Yorkshireman is making.

A truly inspiring video of a craft I thought had been lost years ago. My grandad was foreman joiner for Ernest Moulsons builders from Guiseley. He made the entrance doors to the Crown pub in Ivegate, Bradford. I believe it (and the doors) are still there. Craftsmanship this good should be preserved for eternity. Well done but don't forget to pass on your skills to the next generation of joinery craftsmen (or women) before they are lost forever.
Looks to me like he is doing an excellent job in passing on his skills.

I have watched and helped my dad do this exact job a hundred times, and it still amazes me how he gets everything to fit perfectly, it takes me at least half as long again now, and I’ve only done half a dozen.

That is the most beautiful piece of woodwork I think I have ever seen, I have seen a lot of banisters in stately homes but none of them are as god as this. You have overcome the difficulty of the shape of the stairs and produced a piece of art. Very well done.

Loved the scrolled ends, looked fairly complicated, but then... that Crown piece! That was one mind-boggling chunk of angles! Even the jig you made to cut it into shape-- that was... that was... genius! I couldn't even begin to DRAW A PICTURE of that piece!

Amazing work, the sapele is a beautiful wood choice for this project. SketchUp is not cheating, it’s just another tool used by a skilled craftsman. I have been watching your work for about a year now and am often amazed at your solutions to problems encountered, the tripod was genius. The jig you made for cutting the wreath on the bandsaw made my head hurt. Watching from Ontario, Canada.

I am totally amazed at what I just saw from beginning to end. I have never in all of my senior years seen a handrail this beautiful. All of the planning, design, measurements, tools and equipment needed is just awesome to see how it is made and the skill required to make it. I learned a little about what is needed to make an insert to go into the wall in absence of a stud to support the rail. Thanks for a outstanding video.
You can put all the world's best tools into the hands of a man & most wouldn't have a clue how to use them.
This young man not only knows his tools, he uses them as an extension of what his brain is telling him to do in order to create what he is thinking of, he is at one with them.
As a retired painter,decorator with decades of experience in all areas of the trade, I can tell you that it is no mean feat to produce a handrail in that situation.
There are the internal angles of the walls,of which few are truly plumb,there are the angles combined of the walls,with the turn angles of descent in one single piece alone that has to meet together.
I know there are very few carpenters that can rise to the challenge, they would simply fix two straight,incomplete lengths of rail,as opposed to a continuous length of rail & when they do such things it's not nice to see.
I take my hat off to this young man,it's good to see that there are still upcoming generations of whom their fathers would be proud of ,nice job young man,very well done.
You might have heard of the recent New Yorker article "The Art of Building the Impossible": in it we're introduced to someone who does work for the priciest clientele in NYC and the guy interviewed says that his craftspeople are the best at what they do - but the viewer only sees one picture of the end result. This video shows us what that process is like: incredible work!

I just loved the craftsmanship, care and skill which you lavished on a handrail. Nothing left to chance, absolute quality in every step. The end result is not just a thing of function, it is sculptural and a thing of beauty made to the same level of peerless craftsmanship redolent of the past - skill and care which is rare to find in today's world. There should be a Nobel Prize or an Academy Award or an OBE for artistry/craftsmanship at this level. Those angles will give me nightmares! Cutting that big block at 26:00 and scribing the twist at 30:00 is incredible.
