Repairing and plasterboarding 160yr old crumbly arched window

  • This I guess is part two of the lining out the hallway/stairs in the house. starting with repairing the loose stones and bricks under the arched window. Then lining out the window, including the compound curve of the arch which was fun! then I also included making up the false arch under the steel beam at the bottom of the stairs.
    Just having this wall finished, even to this level has made a massive difference, it is much warmer and less dusty, and there was a huge draught coming through the hole where those pipes go down into the kitchen.

    I love your channel, and i also love that over the last ten years content makers have almost all gone down the same route of product placement, sponsorship, patreon, bullshit adverts for all sorts of unrelated guff and here we are in 2022 and you are at the top of your game and doing it your own way with no voice over, no music and im hooked! i love it. I dont know how you monetize it, or of you will but it feels like retro video making and im glad of it. thanks.

      I used to have a 300 yr old rubble stone cottage. Very similar walls.
      I'm not sure but it could be the better craftsmen were used on the outer skin and the 'trainees' used on the inner skin. Then of course you wouldn't see the inner skin anyway.
      Also, it must be remembered this house will have shifted all over the place as proper foundations were sort of unheard of!

      @crustycurmudgeon2182 Před 2 lety +2

      @@JohnnyMotel99 A few quick searches and I couldn't find anything related to the inner core walls of these homes. Could well be that it was understood that the inner walls would be plastered over, and structural integrity was unnecessary. Hard to say, but I tend to agree with you that "first year" apprentices may well have done that work! Also, looks like a cavity was purposefully left between inner and outer walls-- and rubble was allowed to fall between (doesn't appear like they meant to fill that cavity). Air barriers are known good insulation between extremes-- could be timeless knowledge, I don't know. What's known is, temperature extremes tend to produce "weeping" of humidity on opposing surfaces-- which could account for some of the mortar degradation on the inner core (just a thought).

      @leafy803 Před rokem +1

      @@crustycurmudgeon2182 The plaster he removed I think was all imperveable (pink) gypsum directly on stone, brick, not traditional lime that lets the building breath. Plus he removed some internal cement that also traps moisture. Possibly also modern plastic based paint, wallpaper also sealing moisture. Additionally I think there is ribbon/strap cement pointing to the exterior which again traps moisture from outside. This causes the stone to disintegrate, corrode over time.

    Dry-stone walling is an ancient Yorkshire craft, but you rarely see it used indoors. :-)
    My mum's house is also in Yorkshire (Colne valley) and was built somewhere between 1250 and 1500. That has walls around 1m thick (at the base, there is a pronounced batter) was built with the local clay packed between the stones rather than any kind of mortar. With those you really did have to choose where to stop pulling out loose stones, as they were all loose when the weight comes off.

    I am continually amazed by the old methods of construction used in the UK. The oldest building I ever worked on was a house built in the early 1700’s. The floor joists were oak logs that were debarked, flattened on one side. Tried drilling holes through them to run electrical wiring. After three bits and one drill we gave up and got a code variance to run the cable across the bottom of the beams. Looking really nice. Can’t wait to see it all finished. You should let your little helper in more. She obviously knows what she’s doing. Good dad! My little girl loved working on building projects.

    Great job, bad choice of MDF for the sill, 5 years and it will need replacing.
    Awesome as a whole.

    Those battens are so much nicer than the 160mm ones from Asda.
