Bender B. Rodriguez It seems the best casting decision are made either as a second choice or out of desperation. Can you imagine Will Smith as Neo, or Dougray Scott as Wolverine, or Tom Selleck as Indiana Jones? Those were all the first choices, and yet it's hard to imagine anyone other than Keanu Reeves, Hugh Jackman, or Harrison Ford playing those parts!

Not surprised to see Viggo so loved and respected. The LOTR appendicies have an amazing story involving Viggo, the horse he rode in the films, and the woman who took care of the horse and horses. She had developed a strong bond with the horse Viggo rode. When filming was over the horses were to be auctioned off to buyers. Viggo purchased the horse and gave it to the caretaker. His comment was that they should be together... such an amazing gesture.

The Oscars are in major part political. You need to campaign, shake hands, talk to the right people. It's an election, and they want a personal connection. It's possible to get an acting nomination without doing so. It's extremely unlikely to get a win. Mortensen does not strike me as one who cares enough to campaign, or is in the right Hollywood social circles to come to the voters minds.

In the books Aragorn was 88 years old when he became king and died at the age of 210. He mentions being 87 in the movies. Being one fo the Dunedain he's blessed with a long lifespan.
But the timeline in the movies is a little different from the books. After Bilbo leaves the Shire, Gandalf is supposed to have left for 17 years before telling Frodo that he's carrying the one ring. The movies skip this part. This means that Aragorn is 27 in the Hobbit movies, even though he should be only 11 in the book.

Viggo is a tough guy in real life. Most actors are not tough guys, but some are, and he's one. Chipped his tooth making LOTR, and wanted to super glue it back together and keep shooting. Broke some toes kicking an ork helmet while filming. The shot was used for the movie. He constantly had scraped up knuckles, cuts, and bruises from the sword fighting, and hand to hand combat scenes, but just kept on going as if was a normal part of the job.

    • @rcmunro22
      @rcmunro22 Před 9 měsíci +11

Yeah when he broke his toe kicking the Helmet, that story is legendary to me.. not only because they used the shot.. but because instead of yelling "Cut!" or "F***!" he just stays in his performance and uses it to give out a bellowing cry of grief. If I remember correctly even Peter Jackson was like wow! Where did that come from, that was extraordinary, felt so genuine. They later found out he mangled he foot bad on that helmet, broke at least 1 or 2 toes. That's a legendary Actor.

I read all the books long before the movie came out and all I could think about was what kind person could they possibly find that would fit the description that Tolkien gave in the books? Someone who was tall and dark but looks as if he could slip into the shadows and hide in plain sight, but someone who is also a fierce warrior and destined to be a king. He has the look of all of these in my opinion, and even performed beautifully to top it all off.

Viggo was immensely well respected by the stunt team (and by the cast and crew in general). It's easy to see why in the various commentary and special features. Everyone who mentions the guy talks about his work ethic, and how eager he was to train and how hard he worked even when he got hurt.
There are a few roles in cinema that are irreplaceable; if you had a different actor in the role, it just wouldn't have been as good a movie because the actor IS the character. Robert Downy Junior as Tony Stark. Harrison Ford as Han Solo. Gregory Peck as Atticus Finch.
Viggo as Aragorn is, I think, one of those roles.

    • @batman4452

How do you say Harrison as Han, and not Mark Hamill as Luke? Harrison does feel irreplaceable as Han, even with this young kid playing him new film looking actually really good, Harrison just nailed the role.... but I feel like Mark Hamill is way more irreplaceable, can't see anyone as Luke besides him....I think Kurt Russell would have been arguably just as good as Han.

because so much time has gone by without doing anything else with the character. the image will always be of hamil because that is all that was done. it's to late now to accept anyone else. Bond works because they never held onto a single actor for long. It's worked all this time. Bond can be anyone. Sure some were better than others but there is no DEFINITIVE BOND and there never will be because a pattern was set in people's mind of seeing different actors. It's really hard to see a certain actor do something for so long and just all of a sudden expect someone else to be viewed as an equal performance. As much as I like the idea of marvel getting xmen back and even if they do a more faithful version of wolverine down the road a part of me will always miss Jackman because he was the only one to do it for all this time. It will be hard to accept a new face and personality.

I truly believe no one else could have done the character of Aragorn justice like Viggo did. I'm young enough to have only read the books after the films came out but my dad tells me he never had a clear vision in his head of what Aragorn looked like while he was reading the books as a teenager. Then when the films came out and he saw Viggo bring Aragorn to life, he immediately felt that this was exactly how the character should look and had always looked, even in his subconsciousness. That's kind of a magical effect for an actor to have on you.

Despite how hugely popular these movies are, I feel they are not as popular as they should be due to the fact that a lot of people don't watch fantasy movies "just because". There are so many people out there (like my friends) who would love these movies and recognize them for the masterpieces that they are if only they would give them a chance. I bought the extended editions each movie and fell in love with the behind the scenes extras. This is how films should be made, the cast and crew actually created a loving bond that made it so difficult to leave New Zealand and move on in their lives. Elijah Wood says that he had a really hard time going back America after spending years with such great people in such a beautiful country.

Exactly. I agree with everything you just said. Especially the part about people who don't watch it "just because." One of the most common reasons I've found is that lots of people like to just go against the tide. Some of my friends thought it was too scary based off of the friggin trailers (I don't know what the hell..... I mean, these are the same people who watch horror films all the time). And others don't like fantasy. They are inherently prejudiced against LOTR because of movies like Twilight, Snow White & the Huntsman, Harry Potter...... what they don't realize is what a masterpiece LOTR is. It blows all of those things out of the water.

He has this soft-spoken, quiet authority to him in real life. I think it would have been so easy to make the character overwrought and pretentious, gloomy even, the same way I've seen so many reserved heroes ruined in the past, but Mortensen nailed it. His performance translated perfectly into the character that Tolkien wrote.
While Jackson's The Lord of the Rings isn't perfect, it is a damn fine piece of work that captures the narrative force and emotion of the books, and in some ways even surpassing it. He really took that role 100%, to the point that all art featuring Aragorn from that point on
took his looks, like yeah, thats canon Aragorn look.

Viggo did an incredibly nice thing for Stephen Colbert..aka the world's biggest lotr nerd, lol. He was coming on The Daily Show to plug his newest movie, and as Stephen's voice played, naming off Aragorn's history and lineage,Viggo smiled and said he knew what a huge fan Stephen was,so he was sending him a chess set made of chocolate, shaped like the entire cast.

Amazon is creating a tv series on the universe. We don't know if it is backstories of the characters or maybe if it is the Silmarillion.

    • @helenafarkas4534

best bet for the Amazon tv series is factoring in all the hints... and the fact that Amazon needs major mass market recognition and appeal if they are even going to get a fraction of the money they spent on the rights back is... Young Aragorn. and just going by what is in the appendicies of the lord of the rings, there is a LOT of materiel to mine. the drama starts up when he is 4 years old, and never really stops.
things like, oh, he grew up in Rivendell with Elrond as his foster father. oh, he spent several years serving with King Thengel of Rohan, theoden's father. Then he spent a good chunk of time serving with Denathor's father in Gondor, and not only founded the rangers of Ithilien during his time there, but put together such a catestrophic raid against the Corsairs of Umbar that the Corsairs were only just becoming a threat again during the events of the Lord of the Rings.
