Citroen DS! Um carro revolucionário que estava bem a frente do seu tempo! Cheio de peculiaridades! Impressionante o rodar macio e silencioso! Bela postagem! Abraços!
Curiosity about the hydraulic system: At the end are shown the "full up" and "full down" configurations, they were not intended to impress people but had their own purpose. The "full down" position made the hydraulic fluid flow into the tank so the owner could check the level (the level could also be checked when the engine was stopped for a long time so the fluid flowed into the tank by itself because the pump was not working, but that would be useful if you drove at the gas station or repair shop and wanted to check the level). The "full up" was meant to be used as an easement while changing tires, you just set the car "full up" and cranked freely the jack until it touched the ground. It was also demonstrated that the car was able to drive on three wheels while on "full up" position, but that was not recommended. Later cars like the XM or the Xantia had also a "middle" position that allowed them to cross ponds at low speed
The truth is tha the full up and fuul down position were meant only for changing a flat tire. The steps are: place it full up, put the (steady) jack in the slot on the side, place it full down, the wheel rises off the ground and you change the tire. The full up position could also be used to overcome very high obstacles but in very low speed and with extra caution because the system is fully pressurised.
Got a 67 ID19, and an Ami 8, and I already drove a 205 GRD, just like you did in your vids haha! Realy like this car, the confort, the steering weel, this gear shifter... I like driving that! And with the little 1995cm3, I only get 8.5l/100 km when driving on country roads, it's less than the average consumption of my GS! Great car. Drive safe!
I had a '72 DS-21 here in Florida which had shifter problems which I was unable to work out reliably When it drove it was and still is the best riding and most efficient car I have ever owned. I would love to get my hands on an ID someday. My Avanti needs proper company.
Your ID is in a very good condition and is a marvel to look at :) thanks for the ride, and for taking care of her too :) all the cars you drove past were very boring... thanks for sharing that! :)
When I did this video I hade just bought it. Bought it for 70 000 swedish kronor. Since then I have just repainted the wheels, adjust the valves, driving, polished and switch out the hydraulic spheres. It has cost maybe 4000 kronor since then.
This is very reliable. This car has the LHM system and the 4 speed gearbox and the newer engine. It's probably one of the most reliable DS/ID model made. It's very cheap to service because it's a very popular car. All parts is to find. Tyers are very expensive. If you want the original look of course. That will cost you 2500kr each, in dollars it's about 380 $.
My dream would be to drive a car of that make and model. Imagine that I will spend the rest of my life and I will not realize that dream . Congratulations on the wonderful car! Congratulations from Brazil
I've been in it's earlier model, with only three wheels running, since my uncle and I had two flat tires (1 rear left wheel and 1 spare wheel) and it went smoothly to the next repairing station (kilometers away from our first place).
I've never driven a "DS", but i had a GS and also a BX.There are no cars, but allmost flying engines, like those, cross the Channel, time ago !Fascinating !
I owned both as well - the BX Diesel was the most reliable car I have ever encountered, but the little GS was just a dream car. So sad they all rusted away. Thanks for reminding me.
the first one of these cars that I saw was in 1957 at Wheelus AB Libya....a fantastic car...I once owned a 1974 504 Peugeot which was the most comfortable car I have ever had..if Citroen were being sold here in Illinois, I likely would have bought one. I think this is the greatest car ever made!
I was just wondering about your accumulator sphere sound at the beginning of the video - but good to know that you've had them all replaced. Great car! I hope I'll own one myself someday. I have owned a BX and now I'm driving a Xantia, but this is the mother of them all - love the hydropneumatic suspension :-)
@Kjell Kriminell Just came to find out about all the great things about the Citroen in just the last 3 or 4 days. What an awesome car. For instance the Nitrogen and Hydraulic Fluid brake apparatus system. I am surprised that other automobile manufacturers didn't follow suit. I believe a guy on another Citroen video commented on how that basically all of the French cars have had a good ride. It's too bad they aren't making Citroens anymore.
Great car! My father used to see another one, but it was DS 23, in USSR, it was 1976. The emotions were so many, that was pure "wow effect" ! According to words of my dad, the feeling was like a car made by aliens. Today there are few cars that can be so impressive with their technical solutions. Abundance of demand, and mass.
You drive it as a DS should be driven. Smoothly, without undue haste. I owned one in Canada, a D-Special, but it finally rusted out. All things considered, the greatest car of the 20th century.
I think all ID/DS from 1966 or later use LHM "Green" system. It was used untill the C5 was introduced in 2001 wich has the LDS system wich all hydraulic Citroën has today.
For bad roads. Great in snow. The self leveling is unbeatable when towing. The ride is extreamly smooth. Most cars today comes with adjustble suspesion.
The original engine used for the 1956 introduction was indeed 'cobbled' together from the TA 4 cylinder engine. It did however have some major differences. And for the introduction of the 1966 models was completely revamped. The basic problem of the increased displacement engines was that they were of an over square design. In real world use the major problem of these engines were their roughness'. Durability was never an issue as long as basic maintenance was done.
This it the cheaper model - ID 19 / ID 20 or early D-Spéciale - with hand shift (not DS semi-automatic) , but this as well gives perfect DS riding comfort. But true: you are handling it as it likes to be done ... not meant to be racers, still high top-speed, and quite acceptable mileage. And comfortable as can be - flying sofa.
Excuse me, but what is that little knob you turned twice to the right of the wheel? If I'm not mistaken, you did it in the Ami video as well. Great video, I can only dream of being in your position some day! :-D
There is no title I guess. I made that song my self singing and playing all the intruments. My real 2 man band (dummer and guitar) is called The Diskins and we're on Spotify and CZcams :) That song is a throw away song, but i like it:)
And to think that Citroen was far beyond time, the suspension, the ride, aerodynamics

This is the best car I've ever driven and ridden. It takes care of you so well, you feel so fresh no matter how far you gone in it.

Classic car and nice video.
Last week I bought a Citroën with HP, what a ride!

Precioso coche. Una obra de arte y de ingenieria
Fantastic!!
Cute guy and cute automobile. Citroens are the same in terms of elegance and technology.
Had it been sitting for a while prior to the last drive or had you just not given it any choke

so its an id not a ds its nice with the old dashboard does this use the red suspension system or the green one?
That transmission sure keeps you busy!
This ID works very well
Awesome car.

Beautifull
It's an Idée, which is a simplified Déesse - for example it has a conventional break system.
Beautifull shuttle!!
A very nice car. I really would like to buy one.

Hermoso clásico...👍👍
I think all ID/DS from 1966 or later use LHM "Green" system. It was used untill the C5 was introduced in 2001 wich has the LDS system wich all hydraulic Citroën has today.
What is the reason behind the hight adjustable suspension? Why would you need one?
For bad roads. Great in snow. The self leveling is unbeatable when towing. The ride is extreamly smooth. Most cars today comes with adjustble suspesion.
Whats the song in the end and where can I get a hold of it? :0
CITROEN: The future in the past!
Does this wheel up and down serve any practical use, other than to change a tire? I've heard it can be used for changing tire; is that true?
It's very practial, you can drive it on 3 wheels. Changing tire is no problemo. Suspention is exellent for towing. Best suspention ever made.
That's good. I take that back, I've seen two. One in Seattle, and one in Tacoma. How reliable is it? Is it expensive to service?

amazing car forever
The earliest ID/DS models use the LHS system wich is softer than the LHM system my ID has.
But the LHM system is much easier to own.
