- Solo Winter Backpacking & Snow Camping in an attempt to summit Mount Washington.
For this adventure, I headed up to the White Mountains of New Hampshire to do some snow camping with the goal of doing of a Mt Washington winter ascent. My plan was to set up a base camp at higher elevation, followed by a lighter weight trek up to the top of Mount Washington.
I went with a tent for shelter on this trip because I originally planned for the possibility of camping above treeline. I had never done that before, but the weather forecast was rather good before I left home, so this seemed like a good opportunity to give it a go. The Presidential Range had other ideas...

Still took the time to film everything while feeling like crap. Hats off to you sir :)
I'm so glad u decided not to venture the ridge w/70 mph + winds.. we'll get more videos thnx 2ur wise decision. 👍
Hey man. I’m sorry you weren’t feeling well. I’m glad that you decided to abort your trip instead of pushing on. God bless you. John
Lol... I guess it was just under thirty years ago when I bought that AMC bandana. I was just a child in my mid-forties. I remember it well, because I went up Boots spur to The Summit, then down to the Lakes and up and down Monroe, then across Bigelow lawn to Lionshead, and back to the car, and never saw a single cloud in the sky the whole time. You would have been bored to tears!😁😁
Hope you feel better.....
Thanks, Linda! All better now :)
Famous saying: "Summiting is optional. Returning to base camp is not!"
Those are truly "white" mountains on this trip. I always enjoy and respect your decisions to call off a goal in the interest of common sense.
no summit fever there.
This is some of the best outdoor viewing on YT. You really do a magnificent job of taking the viewer through the hiking process and experience. Great job!
Thank you! This is a PERFECT video and a great example of calling a hike and playing it safe. This is a lesson that is rarely shown and one of the most important safety concepts to learn for hikers of ALL skill levels.
You definitely made the right call on turning around and hiking out that day. The views weren't there anyway and the way you felt was not good. Hopefully you did enjoy your cheeseburger!.
Holy crap, your timing is impeccable! I literally just turned on CZcams to decide what hiking flick I was going to re-play as I shop for improved gear! Well done
Haha my thoughts exactly! He always uploads new videos when we least expect 👍🏻
See, everytime I think "Isnt it about time Syntax put up a video" he does! I think he's a once a month poster.
Best Hiking Channel on the Tube. Thanks for always doing a great job. I'm going to follow one of your trip recordings this season, probably not snow trips.
you just keep on spoiling us this winter
As I said before, I see snow and camping....I'm watching! Appreciate the videos.
Thanks for posting the trips that don't go perfectly.
Recent subscribe here man... You've been a HUGE inspiration for me to work on getting back in shape to do some of these AWESOME winter hikes you've featured on your channel! Winter is my favorite season and you don't see too many hiking CZcamsrs that seem to agree!
Winter is the best !
I hike all over the whites with my dog ,I have plenty of videos also ,all NH 👍,9 left of the 4000ftrs and also doing 52 WAV ,happy trails
Thank you for taking us through your thought process as you assess risks. Certainly helps to hear how you work through some of the challenges
Always great to see one of your videos pop up in the feed. I think I'm starting to run low on old videos to hold me over between releases... Some of those old videos really had me rolling 😂 its been a real inspiration seeing your evolution into backpacking. Keep up the great stuff, its always a pleasure and you do a great job sharing the experience. You and the family stay safe and be well.
Ps one of these days I need to send out for a sticker to put on my CJ jeep
So happy for another sintax video
Yesssss was so excited for a video. Your videos this winter have been amazing so far. Love it!!!
I was about to go to bed but then saw a Solo Sintax Snow Show released - in the Whites no less!! Must do CZcams....
The whites beat me many times, they will always be there for another day. Always enjoy your video's.
Another great video. You were a huge inspiration for my daughter and I to hit the trail.
Looks like another awesome winter hammock camping adventure
Thank you for taking us with you once again on another wonderful winter adventure Sintax
Stay safe brother
Thanks for the journey! I hope you felt better! It was beautiful scenery!
❤️❤️
You don’t look so hot. I’m glad you pulled the plug on the summit hike. You gotta know when to hold’em and when to fold’em!
Your videos are always a lot of fun to watch. I don't know how you pull off talking to yourself for so long, but it really works!
Shawn, I love your work and adventures. I am planning my first PCT ADVENTURE BECAUSE OF YOUR CHANNEL
Knowing when to say when! Great job!
Looked like a fun trip. Sorry you got sick. Glad it worked out
Hopefully you feel better love the videos
Burr..2 days.nice hike n woods..great winter video...
Glad you’re safe.
I’m so sorry you didn’t feel well. It will be better next time. I hope you feel better soon.🌹🦋🌹
Nice man! I love winter in the whites!
Great to see your videos.
Only my second video of yours. Really enjoy them. I think you made the best decision. Hope you got your tummy back in order.
Thanks for making these! Want to get out in the whites this Winter and I’m stoked to make a go at it. You make it look comfy 😂
Great 👍 video
That bandanna with the map is awesome.
Yaa you were looking a little green around the gills there.. Bummer it didn't work out between weather and illness. Love your solo adventures, particularly the NH ones, because you always are likely to have some unknowns with weather and terrain. Stinks you drove up all that way for it to end that way, but thats all part of it!
Love that pack.
I really enjoyed this video....hope you feel better !
Thanks, Glenn! All better now :)
Casper from central New Jersey .watching. I just found you about a month ago....thanks for providing the entertainment...
Great watch! Sorry about the tummy issues! That sucks up in the sticks! Seems like it would have been a great trip for your winter hammock setup. Those trees mext to your tent would have been perfect. I’m glad you sent this vid in. Real things happen to real people. You’re a great dude! Gotta get mike on these winter excursions! Take care sir.
All I saw was, Alone in the snow. I was like where is Denali?! That dog will find him. Again Thank you for the great videos.
Been there. Glad you made the right call. Happened to me on the carter range
Another great video. Even if it wasn’t your complete planned summit “assault” it was great you took us all along! Hope your distress was short lived. Thanks!
Keep on keepin on.
Syntax...I like that drinking. Coffee Right out the pot.pan Ruff ing it 👍🏻
love the videos!!!
Right call right time. Tough enough as it was. Thanks for sharing your adventure. Try the noodles with mudhrooms and green onions too as their a great meal anytime. Bushyboy Oz.
Lots of snow, lots of hiking, lots of chatting. Too bad you were sick. Next time better.✌😎
Another great winter adventure even if you didn't summit and your guts gave you some trouble. I got to watch this from my Chameleon on the Hang Time clip which is probably the best way to watch any Sintax adventure.
Nice! Gotta love the Hang Time clip for some hammocking theater.
Woot woot love new sintax77!!
Turning around and taking care of yourself is NEVER a failure. The summit will be much sweeter on a better day.
sucks that you had to endure the nausea while on trail and in those conditions. i've had my fair share and keep a few extra digestive meds for such an occasion. love the vids and please keep em coming!
Looking forward to watching the video. The wind did sound intense. I’m sure you carry extra batteries for your GPS. To bad you lost your thermometer. Like they say, “two is one, one is none”. Can’t pack everything you would like to take, especially if it’s not an absolute necessity. I have to take Pepto when my sinuses give me problems and that clears up the nauseous feeling. I liked your sense of humor as to how you questioned what might taste good or may not be good with regards to your stomach issues. I can relate. I don’t know if even being in a tent would be warm enough for me. Obviously better than out in the open. Wise decision with no regrets. Safety is always priority. Wish you had been able to finish your goal. Take it as a sign that you made a good call in not continuing. Temps were predicted to be pretty low. Glad you got back safely. Hope you got over whatever you had soon after your trip. Stay safe til the next one. It was a beautiful sight to see all snow covered trees and the moon.
Nice beautiful view snowfall amazing great video tree forest beautiful 👌👌👍💓 🇵🇰
Awesome area, and great video as always my man 👍🏻 I did some hot tenting not far from there a couple weekends ago. This heatwave is taking all our snow though - get back up here before it’s gone!
Gosh I love the whites! Hope your GI issues were short lived and you’re right as rain again. 🙂
Even though your trip didn't go as planned this was still another great video from you.👍 We had a backpacking trip fail at Seneca Creek a few years ago and I'll have to go back someday. My wife slipped on a wet rock crossing a stream and hit her head. I ended up with a stomach bug that didn't go well. btw I like how you keep doing the classic slowing down sound effects in the videos. I also hope that you felt better after this trip! 😀
Sorry for you feeling bad, certainly hope you were able to eat that cheeseburger, and keep it down.Still awesome to see your adventure.
Thanks
amazing trip. I really like the fact that your videos don't always go prefect. show that camping can be unpredictable but still fun aside from the nausea problem. wonder what adventures is next?
love when you hituuo my backyard a few times a year!
I remember doing the Ammo Jewel loop with my wife a number of years ago...in the summer. Beautiful hike but difficult for us at the time. Looks like a ton of fun in the snow.
I did that loop with my dog a couple of summers ago, great hike!
One of these winters maybe you and Sarah could hike on the big island. Whales, awesome backcountry, and great fish. You’ve earned your stripes in the white stuff. Then again, there’s white stuff on Muana Kea summit.
Thanks for the great content. Hope the stomach bug was short lived.
The right decision was made.
I would go with you in a heartbeat 💗
I always enjoy seeing the winter snow trips. Though I'm not ready for such a trip myself. In my sack of personal care items I have a travel size med bottle. It came with alive in it and is about the size of a chap stick. I put a mixture of stuff in it. Pepto tablets are my one stop stomach cure-all. I also keep a few sinus, ibuprofen, alives, and benadryl. That little bottle has been a real help on my hikes.
Hi Shawn, always good to see you here in NH, sorry the trip didn't go as planned. Wise decision to turn back, not feeling well, the weather we had then and where you were, safe not to push on my friend 👍Thank you for all the filming you did, especially not feeling well 👊Stay safe, stay well and hopefully next trip up here goes smooth buddy✌️👍
Thanks, Dennis!
@@sintax77 Hope you're feeling better buddy👍
Wow nice place bro
enjoyed that video. Felt like I was there minus the cold weather and nausea. Very good lesson on things don’t go as planned so it is very beneficial to be mentally flexible. Hope you were OK and curious if you ever figured out what made you sick.
Also would like to see you talk about getting lost. That would definitely happen to me. Also I think I would take a little first aid kit with something for a fever something for nausea and for a cold/runny nose.
I'll go with ya next time 👍
Dude, sorry your trip didn't fully go as planned, but glad that you were able to safely make it back to the Jeep. The video was still great to watch.
Thanks, Jerome.
Somewhere I have Kodachrome II slides from fall of '62 showing ice crystals forming HORIZONTALLY on the vertical lookout railings. (No snow, late fall foliage.....we drove up.) The volatile and extreme weather there is legendary as you no doubt know. Wise call to abort, considering. But we cozy watchers can't wait for you try again.
Thanks for the vid winter is to short here in nc
Mountains only done one winter trip this year need more cold weather here
Get well soon sintax...
I miss the white mountains, last backpack i was 57 years doing 3 days. My fav, 3-4 days in winter. Worst weather -25, 70 mph wind. Only once i did camp on the ridgeline bet jefferson and Washington, oops. Lost track of time, I didn’t know in a cloud on a full moon night, it’s as bright as early afternoon in a fog. I realized i was tired, then checked my watch. I found a small plateau off the ridgeline on the east side, that dropped about 6’ down which caused the wind from the northwest to blow over my spot. Even 2am it looked like 2pm in the cloud.
Yeah, gas station sandwich probably got ya haha 😃 Still a great video, hope that cheeseburger went down well afterwards. 👍
It was your rice meal buddy that gave you the upset stomach. Seen it before. You really need to get those rehydrated rice dishes super hot to kill the bugs in the rice when it is reheated. Try boiling the bag in some water once it’s been rehydrated if the bags will allow it. Great video as always. Keep up the good work.
I've gone up the Jewel trail in the summer and let me tell you, you turned back at the right spot. It gets a lot steeper past the tree line. Good show case on when to call it quits on a hike. Plus you would've had no visibility at the top.
Great video, I'm sad for you that you had to cut it short. Warmer weather is coming. First time I am commenting on your page
Sweet trip, all in all. Thanks for doing what you do. 🤠 I was hiking Lookout Mountain in Death Valley, there is a rock chimney that looks like your (and Trailkilla's) handy work.... Sure you haven't been out there?
Finally got to camp on Jewell
Next time you wanna try that trail, lemme know. I still need to check Washington off my list. I'd love to go up there or on another hike with you. I'm in Southern NH and have 18/48 done.
Thank You!
Awesome!
your belly is percolating. it happens. :) I woke up in the middle of the night and I was like how did I miss seeing this one? Then I realized it was a new cheeseburger time adventure.
There's our camper guy!
"More grey, smaller trees and steadily increasing wind, that's what's up here, huh." 🤣
Anyone familiar with your channel knows your not a quitter, hiking should be fun not grueling, smart move.
I have been watching your videos for years now could tell you were under the weather so glad you went back I remember when your friends water bottle spilled in his sleeping bag that was horrific 😳
Good call on aborting the mission given the weather forecast and your health. As is always said, the mountain will still be there to climb another day. In the good time and the bad, I always enjoy watching your adventures. Keep on hiking!
Hey great video. I also wanted to recommend to you the Thrunite W1. I've been using it as an EDC flashlight for the last couple of months and it seems like a good option that you may like. Thank you and keep up the great work!!
That looks pretty cool. Thanks for the heads up!
Wow, good call on bailing out. When you have too many things stacked against you, its time to play it safe. The mountain will be there. Great video otherwise! Respect for being up there in a wind storm.
Gotta love the sound of the weather radio adding to the drama....by the way, I could have sworn I saw Carol behind a tree.
Carrrrrol!
Great video I hope u were ok after the burger next year you will make it andy Dublin Ireland 🇮🇪
Thanks, Andy! Feeling better and looking forward to trying it again in the future.
Good call, I don’t won’t to read about you in the news ... stay safe!
Winter ascent in 2007 February, sumit success! Live Mt Washington.!
Your were 98 percent sure? hehe, that was awesome bro.
