My cat and I have a very good understanding when I cut his claws. When he’s in his deepest of sleep I start clipping. After 3 clips, he wakes up and starts swinging, we have a bit of a spat about his claws. Then after I’m bleeding a bit, we both decide which nails we aren’t going to cut that day. :)

      True
entire trick is touching the paws early and often. It’s part of my regular daily petting
once they get used to it
cats like “holding hands loosely”
and it makes cutting a breeze. I do all my cats claws holding him myself
never hit a quick (vascular part) cause I look carefully
and Mittens barely makes a fuss ever. All because I desensitized his feet to touch and talk calmly in reassuring voice ( a stressed owner has a stressed cat
true in parenting, medicine, climbing, etc etc). Good luck!

I haven't trimmed my cat's claws in over ten years now. I have things all over the house for her to scratch (as well as some that were never intended for her to scratch) and she goes to them on a regular basis. Her claws are in great shape and in no way in danger of curling into her pads.
The cat I had before her did need his nails trimmed and he was a BIG strong boy that didn't like it at all. Took a while for me to figure out how to get the job done with out pain and blood. I had to kneel sitting on my feet with him between my legs, while hunched over him. I basically had to body hug him and keep him still. He got treats after every clipping, but it never made it any easier and he was always pissed at me for doing it. Every cat is different.

Long ago, best advice I got was to leave them one claw unclipped at each clipping. Seems she usually prefers me not to clip her dewclaws unless too long. Have tried all kinds of ways to make this claw clipping much easier. Usually not much success. She lets me know her claws need a trimming when she starts getting to close in certain places of our home and starts swiping when I walk by. That is her communications to me. Have been trying different cat clippers. The grocery store ones seem to splinter her nails. Petco $7 clippers that look kind of like upgraded pet grocery store pet clippers much better. Today, just tried her on new $10 Petco cat claw 'clippers'. Seemed much easier for me to get each claw on and quick clip. She tends to always pull back&fight a lot. Today some of this as I expected. Each claw clipped quicker and no 'splinting' or 'fraying'. Not sure if I have been all along cutting at wrong angles? She is in my lap now. A few pet herbal relaxing-calming drops and some you tube cat music and she will be out for her long afternoon nap. Makes up for the claw clipping trauma-drama.

I’ve been terrified of clipping my new cat’s nails for months now. She’s very feisty and bites pretty hard on the regular when’s she’s decided that she’s had enough with whoever is touching/petting her. So, I thought nails would be a nightmare. I had the urge today to at least try, so I got out her favorite treat for distraction and tried a toe. No towel, no help as I knew that would just make her more antsy. No issues! I managed to get all four feet! The last foot she was getting tired of me, but no biting/scratching, so I call that a literal miracle! Glad I won’t be as anxious moving forward when it comes to trimming her nails.

The reason I am on this video is that one of my cats is older and less sedentary than he used to be. Never had to trim his nails before but I think I will have to now. His front claws are not a concern because he still regularly scratches them on the wooden pallet we have in the garden but his back claws are overgrown and always out so it's definitely time to trim. For sure a cats back claws will always grow out faster than the front because they have less of an instinct for sharpening them and taking care of them.

i’ve never had to clip my cats nails before. But, two of them are the same age as me (17) and they’re getting to that point where they can’t keep them as short as they should be anymore.
Wish me luck as this will be the first time I’ve ever cut cats nails before.
4/5 of my cats had their front claws removed unfortunately, I got them all when I was young and my mother had it done under her wish.
With our newest cat I was able to convince her to leave his claws alone and it was a success. Please, don’t declaw your cats. It’s horrible.
If you can’t handle their nails, you just aren’t suited for a cat in a first place.

Anyone afraid to do this, try using oven gloves. I got mine from QVC. I used them and he tried biting and scratching at first and I didn’t feel a thing. After a while I think he wanted to go to sleep. If you are relaxed they are more relaxed as well. Happy trimming !!!!

Hi I appreciate the way you explain how to cut a cats claw but I am more of a visual type of person I would have to see how you would do it in order to try to do it to mines because just because you say don’t go into tight I wouldn’t know how far in a half hour out even if I do see the skin on the knees I just feel a little more at ease to have a reference point to gauge the length of the nail due to the fact that my cat has very long nails

I bought the special cat claw trimmers with the supposed guide that stops you cutting too close to the vein or whatever. when I got it home it didn't come with instructions...so, pretty useless. I chose YOUR video because it clearly depicted the ones with the pull out metal guide. But you omitted to even mention how you use that guide to stop going to deep down the claw.

Wow, my cat did really good for the first time. I was able to do it by myself and she just let me cut her nails. I used nail clippers-- they worked alright but I wouldn't mind getting actual cat clippers. designed for cats. She was a happy girl afterwards, probably should have started doing this years ago. I could tell they were starting to bother her. Plus everytime she walks on my bed-- she drags the sheets and blankets with her. She was like velcro.
Should I do the back claws also, or just leave them be? They're kinda long too.

My cat is a rescue from the streets that I got when she was only a few months old. She is extremely skittish around everyone other than me, which makes it really hard to trim her nails. I have to be the one to hold her, as she will not allow anyone else to do so and barely allows me to as it is. Its hard to get her in a good position and even when we do, she jerks her paw back when the clipper touch her nails, making us hesitate out of fear of hurting her. Even as a kitten its surprising how strong she can be! I’ve tried the burrito method, but it just stresses her out more. I’ve had to resort to the vet but I want to be able to do this reliably at home.

We use a mixture of most of the tips & eventually manage to get the task done but oh the noise... You would not believe the volume a tiny 2.5kg Tonkinese can make. She will sit & allow it but even before the clippers have made contact with her claws, it sounds like a murder is occurring, then when it actually beginsđŸ˜Ÿ...
I think I’m the one that needs a cuddle and a treat once it’s over đŸ€Ș

That is true if you’re cutting them with nail clippers designed for humans (although I think it’s actually the opposite, you’re supposed to hold them vertically). The one used in the video is designed specifically for cats. I got a pair almost identical and I specifically asked about how I was supposed to hold it. The inside is designed to curve in a certain way that you can hold it front, back, up, down, sideways, any which way and still cut the cats nails with no harm done to the cat in any way. They’re much more user friendly.

My cat likes his back feet to be rubbed and spreads them easy so I can clip them. But he really doesn’t like his front paws touched or held. He just pulls them away like “no don’t touch me bro”. I would give him cat nip but he’s actually pretty violent when hopped up on the nip.

I am a new kitten owner.
A friend says you only need to trim the front paws every 2 weeks
to deter them from climbing and tearing up furniture .
He says he only trims the back paws every month or 2.
Our kitten is hard to hold still, so I am anxious to do this as quickly
and with as little effort as possible.
He also said to give them treats when it is done.

How easy that is, probably depends on the type of cat you have. We have a Russian Blue and
it is hard enough to just use a lint roller to get the hair off him. As soon as he sees it, it's off to the races.
He is CONSTANTLY shedding. It's amazing how much hair a skinny 9 lb cat can produce constantly.
I had to line all the screens on our screened porch with a metal lath that I got from Home Depot
to protect them from being ripped to shreds. When the pandemic is over we are going to find
      someone to do his nails.
