    I always start the 2nd week after I get the kitten. The time lets us get to know each other and see if a bond of trust has built. Then I introduce them to the clippers and treats, lots of rubs and praises. Dont always get all four paws in the first session, and I let them go until the following week. By clipping each week, they get use to it pretty fast. Eventually the sessions are every other week or whenever I feel they need trimming (like when their digging into my shoulder as the cat dives across my desk and me to the bed). Ive had one yell at me for being too slow in getting the treat afterward.

    I clip my cat's nails yesterday for the first time,
    but usually someone else does it.
    it's becoming very costly so I decided to do it myself.
    I put the cat in my lap, talked to her very calmly and I took clipped her nails and it was fine .
    I'm glad I saw your video because it gives me a few more tips on what to do with my cat

    Thank you for posting this video. Four months ago I adopted a 6 yr old calico cat from a rescue organization, and we are still getting used to one another. It's been 18 years since I've had a cat, and this one is now living with a dog for the first time. She doesn't like to be touched very much although she likes to sit next to me at times, occasionally on my lap, and now wants to sleep on the bed at night (but not too close after an initial hello). If I try to touch her to trim a few nails or groom her, she spits at me, howls, bites in a non-playful way (my forearm as she runs away), or even smacks me in the face. Needless to say, trimming her nails is stressful for ME too. I've trimmed dog nails for years, and had one rescue dog that took many years to fully accept the clippers, so I hope I'm up to this challenge. I'm going to spend more time on steps one and two. Wish me luck!

      I hope she figures out she can trust you more fully very soon. It is a marathon, not a sprint. Cats will adjust at their speed, not ours. I wish you the best luck in that process, and hope the major struggle and objections abate soon.

    Love the kitty. So sweet and calm. My current boy isn't super fond of that process, but is very slowly starting to accept that it must be done. I have made it a point to gently handle paws and pads during normal petting/cuddle sessions, and it does make a huge difference in the reaction when the time comes to actually trim his claws.

    I have owned 58 cats over a lifetime... starting when I was a child and ... well, I am 77 years old now. I always cut my own cat's nails without problems... As you say, most cats can actually be very relaxed and even seem to like it... I recently got a kitty after not having one for the past 15 years... I can't even get him to come onto my lap, never mind lay upside-down. I got him at 8 months old and he is now nearing a year old and I still can't cut all his nails though I have little by little done a few now on the front feet as they were extremely long and sharp, catching on everything and even me. Now, at 11 months old he weighs nearly 14 pounds... I think he is going to be a big cat by the time he is full grown. He is very strong... I will keep trying to cut his nails.

    I adopted two kittens from a rescue shelter many years ago and my vet convinced me and my GF to remove their claws through laser surgery. Neither of them had pain afterwards, but they would always hiss if we touched their back paws. I am on my third cat raised from a kitten with her claws and trimming is really easy to do. You have to buck up and keep relaxed on both ends to accomplish an easy trim. It takes me a minute to use a side clipper to do all 18 claws. My trick is wet food as a reward...the dew claws are still the worst but keep confident. The first time I tried clipping, my hand was shaking. These cats really do need their claws intact and I still feel sick to this day realizing how much of my previous cat's bones have been removed from declawing. :(

    I wanted to thank you for such an excellent video, as well as the recommendation for clippers! The breeder recommended a different one, but I bought the Necoichi clippers instead, and I’m so glad. My kittens had already had their nails trimmed before they came to me so I think the breeder must have done a lot of the initial hard work to get them used to paws being touched, because they’ve definitely been the most willing out of any cats I’ve known to have me touch or interact with their paws. I started doing as you suggested, gradually getting them used to me handling their paws and then moving on to retracting each claw when they’d got used to the handling, and yesterday, on the first attempt, I successfully trimmed all my ginger boy’s front claws! 🤗 (the back ones weren’t quite ready to be trimmed again yet, but I had a look at all of them too). I was expecting to do only one claw at a time over days, but he was an absolute angel. In fairness, he was also mostly asleep 😹 Very purry so not fully out, and not at the stage of having dreams and sudden twitches either, and he moved a paw away once or twice… but he was totally happy to have me there doing my thing, heaping tons of praise on him in a gentle voice, and I feel like I’m now the cat wizard 😸 I think those clippers being small, sharp, and quiet, were absolutely critical here - if there was a really loud cracking noise or the sound of springs putting the handles back into position, I think it would have been a very different story! Some of his claws were also splintered and fragile (which look really uncomfortable), presumably from previous trimmings, so it was definitely worth paying the extra for these to hopefully prevent that from happening again and give him a good experience.
    I’m now looking for the opportunity to get his sister in a similar state to try the same trick again, because her claws are insanely long and pointy, and she’s getting stuck on things and accidentally casually lacerating my skin!
    Grooming is weirdly a nut we haven’t yet cracked… I’ve tried a slicker brush with rounded ends, a Pet Teezer, and a Zoom Groom, and it was only the latter I managed to get anywhere near either of my cats, and again, she was mostly asleep 😹 She tolerated it for a good amount of time though, but I was being very gentle to try not to spook her, so it wasn’t amazingly “successful”… but hopefully we can work on that :) I tried my luck with the ginger boy last night, after he’d been such a perfect client at the nail bar, but he really seemed to object to how the Zoom Groom smelled, so that was a failed attempt! Work in progress :)

    • @TheCatButler
      @TheCatButler  Před 2 lety +1

      I am glad the recommendation worked! Yeah you nailed it! Nail clippers being small, sharp, and quiet is key to getting those claws clipped with out issues. Hopefully the sister will warm up to getting her nails done :)
      Yeah sometimes they get attached to certain brushes. Or hate getting brushed in certain areas. It definitely requires some patience for them to get use to it! Wish you the best!

      Michelle maybe start with when he sits on your lap reward him with a treat. Do that for a week or two once he gets it down, and then next get him use to you holding his paw. when you hold his paw give him a treat. working gradually to a nail clip. Let me know if that works. @@GamingKittie786 hmm does she scratch you if you touch her paw?
      one of my cats was very protective of her paws too, but I was persistent and would give her treat after she let me touch her paws. she eventually after a long while warmed up to it.
      In addition to treats another thing she liked was being brushed. She would purr with excitement when I brushed her hair. So I would also do this right before a nail trim too.
      So in summary I tried to link positive things to a nail trim. Your cat may like other things that make her happy. So maybe try to do those things around a nail trim. It won't be easy, but slow and steady she may eventually let you trim her nails.

I wanted to get your opinion on using human nail clippers for trimming the cat's nails. I used them for years with other cats I've had, and it always worked so well. The pet nail trimmers make me nervous because you have to put the entire nail through the hole and then gauge if you have the sharp part of the trimmer on the right spot of the nail. Do you see any drawbacks to using human nail clippers instead? I have 2 teenage cats and I'll be working on this training before I attempt to trim their nails!

      Patti thanks for the kind words! So I’m not as experienced with human nail clippers but I find the cat nail trimmer very easy to use and easy to spot when you are cutting too deep. They are also fast and quick for a stubborn cat. Hope that helps! The key is you need high quality clippers. The cheap ones make it a lot harder to cut their nails

    My cat does allow me to touch her paws, she's totally fine with the clipper itself and also the sound it makes. The only thing she doesn't like is me actually clipping. She may allow me to do one nail occasionally, but that's it. I feel like she is ticklish, cause whenever I go to close the clipper that's already holding her claw, she kinda pulls away. I don't think that it's got anything to do with her expecting pain as I've never clipped too much or anything. I really think she's just ticklish. Her sister does it, too. They're also both inside outside cats, so naturally they don't like to lay on my lap like that with their belly exposed. I have to come as near as they let me and then stay there and do it. I wish they could just sharpen their own claws on trees or something, but they don't

    I do love these clippers and my little nudist loves to have her nails clipped she actually asks for me to do it lol true … but I still struggle with them because of cutting edges is very thin but the overall blade is actually thick so we’re tiny little cubby tight going through there it sometimes is too deep just to get over the little curve as I’m already at the quick I do keep her nails very trimmed she gets it but once a week she doesn’t like them any longer than that so we are definitely you know only taking a little bit off at a time and I find it difficult on the dewclaws especially but all in all these were my favorites and they’re her favorites and I’ve only come close to cutting her a quick a couple times she immediately starts a little cry and I don’t continue the cut that’s more like a little nick …
    And I’m grateful every ability to stop right away
    Another good thing to do possibly it would be to swaddle them with like a little please blanket that they sell on Amazon they make them for like guinea pigs or babies things like that they’re very thin very comfy I find that well they have to do my parents cat which is a regular fur baby cat She hast to be fully swaddled with only one paw out of the time and screamed the entire time
    It is very true about the regular trimming she is able to do so many things she can climb up my pant leg she can she can jump onto my shoulder and her nails can be out but they do not penetrate the skin they’re nice and soft if she is aggressive yeah she can probably do a scratch or two but nothing compared to for the things that happened before from my parents cat who doesn’t get her nails trimmed very often at all
    I know that I’m extremely lucky because my little kitten takes a bath once a week and she lets me do her ears or eyes her full nail care but she’s been doing it since she was a baby so I realize that I do wish there was more left-handed scissors in ones that were completely thin kind of like weed trimming scissors they’re very very sharp extremely thin all around that would be great no I did not try them on her nails because I realize that they don’t have the durability and strength that they would go crooked and not make a nice even cut but if it was just something that didn’t have the thickness that it was in file down onto the sharp it would be great let me know if you find anything thanks and I appreciate your CZcams videos is nice finding you

    My cat is 7 months old. I have taken her to the vet to get her nails trimmed but I found out they were not really trimming them but just taking her to the back and then giving her to me. She will let me touch her paws but when I trim one or two nails, she is thru. It takes forever to cut her nails. By the time I cut them all, its time to do it all over again. Your cats looks so laid back. How do I calm her down?

    • @TheCatButler
      @TheCatButler  Před 2 lety +2

      Hey Michelle good question. Yeah it may take several sessions to cut your cats nails. You can do it when your cat is sleepy or more relaxed. Rewarding your cat with a treat after every nail trim will condition your cat to enjoy the nail trims. It does take some patience.
      My cats were not very cooperative in the beginning. But the treats helped. And they looked forward to the nail trims because they get to fill their belly.
      They also began to like having their hair brushed. So I combined the nail trims with their grooming. And they were more relaxed that way. I hope it helps!
      Lastly a good nail trimmer is a must. One that is quick and fast.

I want to do her nails at home.

    • @TheCatButler
      @TheCatButler  Před rokem

      Hey Magdalene! So there are short term and long term solutions. For the short term you could wrap the cat in burrito and also apply a calming spray - prf.hn/l/wLXzlW9
      This would calm the cat down a bit. You can also try to clip their nails when they are a little sleepy.
      The long term solution is once you establish trust to have them associate nail clipping to positive things, a treat or if they like to be brushed, to brush them.
      Hope that helps! Let me know if you have any questions.

    How do I get around my cat going straight into fight or flight every time I try though? It makes it impossible for me to train her and get her used to it because she’ll just get up and run away every time. The one time I tried to keep her in one place she got mad and growled at me. Can’t get her into a “cat burrito” either cause same problem. She’s a sweetheart (no really! She trusts me but she’s just easily startled and triggered…and I do everything to try and keep her trust)and I love her to death, but I am starting to feel like I fail her as her owner cause I can’t take care of her properly. Problem also is, she was rescued from a horder family, so she was never properly socialized with humans during kittenhood. I was taking her to the vet or petsmart to get groomed, but they don’t do them anymore where I live. I can only find dog groomers… ironically when I took her in to get a nail trim in the past she was easily disarmed and taken care of in minutes…I just don’t get why
