I Climbed Japan's Most INTENSE Mountain | Mt. Haku

  • So I climbed one of Japan's three holy mountains, Mt. Haku, after learning more about Noh, Shintoism, and Japan's rich culture and history. After 10 hours of climbing up and down, muscle pain that I still feel today, and only a few hours of sleep, it was all worth it... Thanks to Harmonica Man! (and the beautiful nature of course)

So guys, what did you think of my climb up Mt. Haku? It looks amazing, right?
I’d like to say a big thank you to Takashiho San for inviting me on the tour and to none other than, Harmonica man!

Just left Kanazawa 2 weeks ago, I made sure that I tried Hakusan Nihonshu- Junmai Daiginjo of course. Simply the best - sweet on the palate without weird or unpleasant after taste (dry). It made Dasai or Hakkaisan feels overrated.
Oh wait... we are talking about Shira... I mean Haku-ya... I mean Hakusan the mountain? Man, Japanese is confusing.
      Oh well.

The DPRK has its own famous volcano too called Mount Paektu. Mt. Paektu is an active supervolcano (stratovolcano with a truncated cone due to the caldera) located along the Chinese-DPRK border. It is the highest mountain in Korea and Manchuria. It is a volcano that has been very sacred to Koreans throughout history. Reaching the peak is a rite of passage for Koreans. According to mythology, it was the birthplace of Dangun, the founder of the first Korean kingdom Gojoseon, whose parents were said to be Hwanung (the son of Heaven) and Ungnyeo (a bear who had been transformed into a woman).
In 946 CE, one of the most powerful eruptions (second to be precise) in recorded history took place at Mt Paektu. It was a Plinian eruption with a 7 on the VEI (Volcanic Explosivity Index), the highest measure possible. Higher than the Krakatoa eruption of 1883 (which was a 6). The eruption ejected about 100 to 120 cubic kilometers of tephra and collapsed the mountain into a caldera, which now has the crater lake Heaven Lake. An average of about 5 cm of Plinian ashfall and Coignimbrite ashfall covered about 580,000 sq. miles all the way to Japan.

Wow, what an incredible hike! And the addition of the opera singer at the end was wonderful! As long as you believe in yourself, anything is possible! That's why I'm glad you pushed yourself to do this despite how tiring of an experience it must've been. As you said, we need to take the time to enjoy the little things in life, cherish every moment, and be thankful for what we have! Life doesn't have to be busy busy busy, working overtime. Instead of doing something they don't enjoy doing for the money, people should pursue a career they're passionate about, because what is the point if you have no passion or motivation for such?
The US has some interesting volcanoes as well! Like Mauna Loa in Hawaii which is the second largest volcano on the WHOLE planet (after Tamu Massif), covering a land area of 5,271 squared km/2,035 square miles and spans a maximum width of 120 km/75 miles. In Hawaiian, Mauna Loa means Long Mountain! Mauna Loa formed between 600,000 and 1 million years ago, making it a relative newcomer in the Hawaiian island chain, as the older islands are those in the northwestern chain. Mount St Helens is another interesting one, famous for its 1980 eruption that killed 57 people and destroyed 200 homes, 47 bridges, 15 miles/24 km of rail, and 185 miles/298 km of highway

Thank you for the lovely comment. I never expected this trekking tour to teach me such a perspective, but this is what makes it interesting.
Of course, I've been to Hawaii as an ordinary Japanese person, but I have not yet been to the volcano. So I definitely want to visit next time I go there. Thanks for the recommendation.

The concept of Shinto, which resides deep within the Japanese psyche, is very unique, and it is unlike any other religion in the world. It is that God lives in all the things of this world, and we should be in awe of them, grateful for them, and honoured. They say that God lives in toilets too. That's why Japanese people keep toilets incredibly clean.

at least most of those mountains have "proper" ways to walk, I was in Sri Lanka a few weeks ago and climbed the Pidurangala Mountain and at some points I was sure I am going to die there as it was so incredibly dangerous at some parts, my GF couldn't even make it as she wasn't flexible enough climbing some super high rocks.

What a trek. It was similar to the one that Chris Broad and with Natsuki climbed Mr. Fuji. I think it took them 3 days and 2 nights to accomplish. It looks like really rough terrain. I don't know about you but I don't think I would be able to make it. Did you have any problems with the altitude?

This video looks really really good. Videographer knows what they are doing. Everything perfectly exposed, the lens gave you that 3D pop from the background, and distant landscape scenes had so much crispness and details. Wow. Well edited too with nothing jarring. Keep using your current team. No slight to Mr. Affable, but, your footage is so good compared to most of his.
