    At our local WalMarts where they sell gift-cards, there is a LARGE printed sign, and it says something like, "If you have been asked to purchase a gift card to pay a debt..these are scams.." Or some such. Delighted that retail outlets are stepping up. I have seen an employee intervene, no hesitation - and ask an elderly person, "Is this for some tech support call you received?" Heroes!!!!

      Saw one like that and they called over an Assistant Manager to talk to the guy who was trying to buy $5000 in gift cards to send to "a family member who needs to get his car fixed" and became quite agitated that Walmart was stopping it. NOTHING added up and management explained it calmly to him what was going on, but he just left, swearing, and yelled that he would just go to another Walmart and try it over there.
      Horse to water and all that, I just hope that manager called ahead to the other locations to be on the lookout for him.

      It says a lot about people who from thousands of miles away will call elderly and vulnerable people to try and steal their life's savings. I've always wondered why it's the same people that do it over and over, and am now convinced that some kinds of people are just designed that way. Some would argue that it's due to poverty, terrible living conditions and desperation, but that would mean over half the world would do the same, but they don't. Given that millions of people from there, and not just the "criminals", but people from all walks of life, do this daily 24/7, tells me that it's something cultural. All cultures value certain things, but here we have one that values stealing and dishonesty. It's hard to imagine, and harsh to say, but true. Many people I've spoken to who have immigrated from india tell me that bribery, payoffs, lying and cheating are just a way of life. It's just sad all round.

    I remember when I was at work (Security in a supermarket) and an elderly woman came up to me asking me to help her email a photo to someone. I said yeah I can help. When she said she wanted to email this gift card number of a sum of £500 so she could get £250k transferred to her made my heart sink. I tried all I could to convince her it was a scam but she kept saying "but my friend got his money and sent a picture of the money" and I again tried to tell her that his FB possibly got hacked and to call him directly but she wouldn't listen (I obviously didn't tell her how to send the picture) and told all colleagues not to either. A few days later she tried buying £2500 worth of gift cards and it got so bad it escalated to the police cos she already lost £2500 already. A police officer came and asked for any CCTV or information from me and I basically told the officer "you'll be wasting your time as the money is gone."

      Yep.

They told her not to call any other family members because I wanted to tell them, requested 2k in iTunes gift cards, barely speaks English and CVS had no questions. I personally made it a point to meet with the regional managers and now they probe when elderly people are buying gift cards that raise eye brows. Keep up the good work.

    • @dietrichdietrich7763
      @dietrichdietrich7763 Před rokem +2

      VPNs are not entirely safe, they're open public servers to tunnel traffic by proxy location and ports. There is almost multi-tunneling encryption features that could enstrengthen connections theoretically that hasn't been entirely explored. I hope this little tid-bit in the tech-world read this one and could probably fix this patch up to work stronger to keep from spy-free from others using that server.

    I once was at a supermarket, where an old man at the checkout next to me asked to buy GooglePlay worth 500€. The cashier asked him, what amount of gift card he wanted, but the man just had a handwritten note with the words "500€ Google Play" on it. I asked him, if someone called him and told him to get these gift card, because the poor fella didn't know, what he was buying or what Google Play cards were.
    He was very hesitant and defensive, but I told him very loud, that this was a scam, that he should hang up his phone and call the police.
    He left the shop, before I was ready with my stuff, but I hope he followed my advice an hung up on these scammers...
