The Front Page (1931) [Comedy]

"The Front Page" is a 1931 American comedy film, directed by Lewis Milestone and starring Adolphe Menjou and Pat O'Brien. Based on a Broadway play of the same name, the film was produced by Howard Hughes, written by Bartlett Cormack and Charles Lederer, and distributed by United Artists. The supporting cast includes Mary Brian, George E. Stone, Matt Moore, and Edward Everett Horton. At the 4th Academy Awards, the film was nominated for Best Picture, Milestone for Best Director, and Menjou for Best Actor.
The film, considered a screwball comedy, centers on an investigative reporter (Pat O'Brien) and his editor (Adolphe Menjou), who hope to cash in on a big story involving an escaped accused murderer (Stone) and hide him in a rolltop desk while everybody else tries to find him.

Thanks for this movie. This was remade in 1940 as His Girl Friday with Cary Grant as Walter Burns and Rosalind Russell as Hilde Johnson. It's one of my very favorite movies and I can't recommend it enough. As a retired newspaperman myself I especially loved the line "Who reads the second paragraph?" Thanks for all the films you post.

This was rewritten and re-released as "His Girl Friday" with Cary Grant and I think Rosalind Russell it is much better I think.

Since this movie was made in 1931 - what are they drinking while sitting at the bar (at 16+ minutes into) ?? Prohibition was enforced for two more years. And even then Liquor was so regulated that licensing was unheard of. Maybe it was Coca-Cola with Cocaine as it's primary ingredient.

the "bar" is in a second floor apartment. it's called a speakeasy, an illegal "gin joint". what they were drinking was either canadian whiskey, euro grog brought in through canada, rum from the carib, or "home brew" booze of some ilk. sugar, water, bread yeast, a sealed vessel, and time equals "wort", and a spaghetti pot and plumbing interacting with wort makes booze. pre-yeasted "malt health meal" became INCREDIBLY popular in the prohibition era, lol.

there's a lot of great stuff in this movie: 27:00 (camera work); 36:44 (twang on the banjo); 37:03 ("you know what else you can do?" ""what?"") 38:30 (I just redd that "alienist" was the original word for psychiatrist); 40:44 (Doctor DeMentia, the psychiatrist). 1:01:40 (are they making a reference to smoking pot?). 1:05:40 (jumps out window). 1:07:44 (twirley photography)

Interesting to watch the original version of His Girl Friday (the remake). Good movie and well acted. Unfortunately, the racist remarks from the time period make the movie difficult to watch at times.
