I bought a cheap Porsche 911 SC. Until I paid the workshop invoice to get it running right...

  • What did I pay for this 1979 Porsche 911 SC and was it too much in the end?
The engine was running bad and the paintwork is scabby and this is the bill for stage one ... to get it driving nicely.
It was a LOT of money *!@*!£*$
    Was it worth it?

When you buy an old Porsche, expect to spend another 20% on sorting it out after the purchase. Money well spent either way! I hope to see more of your SC!

Hello and thanks for this video. Glad to see I'm not the only one who feels like they overpaid for a vintage air cooled 911 that has paint and rough idle issues. A bit of back story. I was always into 928's so I've enjoyed relatively cheep Porsche's for a long time now and have gotten a bit spoiled with it. I am in Illinois and In 2000 I bought my last 928, a 1979 manual for $2,200 US so about 4k today. Late 2014 I got the itch to own a 911 and wanted an air cooled vintage model but prices even back then for a sorted SC was about $35k. I had been planning early retirement for many years so the thought of shelling out that kind of money vs. keeping it invested didn't agree with my plans so I started to somewhat consider a 996 which in 2015 was at the height of the internet IMS, RMS, bore scoring mania. I ended up buying one close to me from a private owner for a crazy low $11k in good condition with 99k miles. I went on to achieve my goal of early retirement a few years later at 53 in 2019. The problem was the 99 911 996 never scratched that itch to own a vintage air cooled SC 911. I started looking at prices the beginning of this year and wholly cow! The SC's I was looking at for 35k in 2015 were now $60k. Being now retired I said to myself no way but kept looking and passed on a few targas in the 40's because I wanted a SC coupe. About a week ago a dealer in Queens NY had a 1982 SC for sale in Grand Prix white with the whale tail and front spoiler for $49,500 with paint defects . For a SC coupe, which tends to go for a bit more than the same year/condition targas. I inquired about the car and they sent me a link to nearly a 60 detailed pictures along with a walk around video. I could see the car's paint had to many nicks and scratches to count. They said the cold idle was fluctuating which from my research and coming from the 928 Bosh K jetronic world sounded like a warm up regualtor. After some back and fourth negotiations, we stuck a deal at $41k plus 1kincluding enclosed shipping to Illinois. I took delivery of the car two days ago so I treated myself to a b-day\xmas present many years in the making. The car was as described but I have to say I was quietly crapping myself since I committed to wiring the funds. I've never done a deal like this sight unseen so just seeing the enclosed trailer show up allowed for a bit of relief. I washed the car yesterday, and to be honest, the grand prix white paint is bad and needs a respray. I might be able to blot touch the gazillion of chips and scratches to make it look seven feet away respectable and enjoy it at least the first year of driving it before it goes to paint. My OCD personality being what it is I cannot help feel like I overpaid but realistically, at $41k for the car minus shipping I cannon find any 1978 - 83 SC even close to that price. I am grateful to finally have my first AC car and currently have both my 99 996 and 79 928 for sale. In December - January in Illinois we get some harsh cold winters and my garage is not heated but we’ve been running warmer this year so I may order the WUR rebuild kit and approach that first. The car I bought is on my channel czcams.com/video/Ghmp2eaZTQU/video.html

Thanks for your comment. These air cooled cars have a magnetic attraction don’t they? It’s almost an addiction to some of us.
Given the rarity of the SC I think we’re going to be ok on value ultimately - they’ll only go up.
Combine an appreciating asset with a car that is ‘art on wheels’ that you can look at, listen to and DRIVE and, frankly, ‘overpaying’ by $5,000 or so as we both may have done really doesn’t matter in the scheme of things. Just enjoy! Russell

@Porschenomics very good point Russell and the FOMO feeling is gone as well as the constant search so that alone is worth the 5k. Seems like most buyers of air cooled 911s today feel like they overpaid but I've spoke with a few on the air cooled forums and many long time owners said they felt the same in the 90s when they paid 20k lol.

You’ll have a well sorted car in a particularly nice colour (Incl. Interior) when the paintwork has been done.
    👌

That’s a great buy, lovely colour combo. £50-55k retail value in todays market. I can see these being £60-65k in next 4/5 years.

Is that all? That's very reasonable, if you ask me. Great choice. They dont make them like this anymore. Just enjoy. The bill will pale into insignificance in the long run. Come along to a Porsche meet inthe summer and you will understand ;-)
See you on the road. Well done!

I think my targa stands me in about £60k now. It’s just an “ongoing restoration”! Lots done , but far from finished

I've spent more on much less valuable cars!
