- Continuing our quest to build bulletproof clawhammer banjo timing, I've created the single most difficult striking hand exercise I can conceive. In this exercise, we move from quarter notes, quarter note triplets, eighth notes, eighth note triplets, to sixteenth notes while keeping the same tempo. This exercise is a light-hearted challenge. If you can't do it, don't be alarmed. Think of it as a puzzle to be solved over time. Have fun. Never give up.
Ryan Harlin's video gives you a really nice walkthrough of how he tackled the exercise:

Hey Tom, sorry to bump the thread on this older video, but I just found this video and wanted to say thank you! These exercises are just what I needed. This video and the ones on hitting the inner strings have proved very valuable for me. You got a subscriber out of me! The banjo quest is a lifelong mission and I'm enjoying the journey. BTW, that OME is beautiful! I hope to get a nice one like that one day. 🙂
So glad to hear, Keith! See you on The Quest!
Such a practical, helpful exercise. with wonderful tips about how to accomplish the end result! Thanks so much.
Glad you enjoyed the exercise, Margaret! Thanks so much for commenting.

Glad you enjoy it, Andrew!
Brilliant exercise!
Thanks, Barry!
Hey nice foundational exercise. I find myself hitting the drumhead of my banjo a little more than I'd like so this helped me slow down. Your banjo is gorgeous! Who made it?
My name is Aaron. I just started learning banjo a week and a half ago. It's a lot of fun. I learned Fly Around My Pretty Little Miss in two finger thumb lead style. I posted it on this (my wife's) CZcams channel if you want to critique my progress. Anyway, Best regards.
What banjo is that!? i need it in my life haha!
Oooh! That's my Ome Omega. Whew, such a beauty, isn't it?
You can tell that you were a drummer from this banjo exercise because i am a drummer and i remember these exercises lol
