How Iran strapped SAMs to F-14 Tomcats

  • During the Iran-Iraq War, the F-14 was used by Iran to control the air. However a shortage of air to air missiles meant that Iranian engineers had to turn to the only other alternative they could find; Raytheon HAWK surface to air missiles. They would attempt to fire these from the Tomcats.

      @alexanderbreunig7016 Před 9 měsíci +12

      It is by now established by publicly available documentation that those Iranian Tomcats were not "dumped down" or any 1st generation airframes. They were / are regular Block-90 / -95 F-14As similar to the blocks the US Navy received between '76 -'80. In fact the IRIAF (at that time still the IIAF) received the newer, somewhat more resilient P414 iterations of the TF30 engines even before the US Navy did, as the Shah essentially paid the TF30 upgrade. The only things different in these Iranian F-14As were that the APX-81-M1E IFF interrogator could only interrogate Soviet built aircraft, The AN/ARA-62 ILS system was left out (just needed for carrier landings and only works there actually (doesn't read civilian or land based ILS)), the KIT-1A, KIR-1A and KY-28 Secure Voice system was left off (again, only a US Navy specific system). There was one ECM suite left off but at that time the Israelies (which were on very good terms with the Shah during delivery time in the 70s before the revolution) took care of that and had that covered for Iran rather quickly. Apart from that, Iranian F-14As are the same as the US airframes - weapons equipment, missile guidance systems, AWG-9 radar system incl. the firing solution modes, main ECM equipment, avionics etc. - all the same. No dumping down there.

    As a military expert, I can tell you that despite decades of sanctions, Iran has become very powerful from a military point of view. The important point is that it makes most of its own weapons and is not dependent on any country, and keep in mind that today, measuring countries using the classical method of comparison is obsolete. What is important in military power today is combined wars, of which Iran's military power is the best example in the world. This point has created a strong deterrent against America.

The military junta purchased the missiles and French technicians were already working on arming these aircrafts with Exocets when the junta sent troops to occupy the islands and France declared an embargo on French arms sales and assistance to Argentina. Still, a Dassault team remained in Argentina throughout the conflict and it seems they provided material support to the Argentines engineers, identifying and fixing faults in Exocet missile launchers. There’s a tiny confusion in this Video but the right narration is as follow according to the pilots themselves: 1- Colonel Adeli shut down 3 Mig23s with one Phoenix in 1986. 2- Mazandarani fired the first ever Hawk missile from a F14 in real combat situation and it killed a Mirage F1 in 1987. 3- Adeli fired a Hawk missile from his F14 and shut down a Mig29. It was in 1988 while Iran and Iraq had agreed a cease fire but Iraqi air force was backing up the MKO offensive at the Iranian borders.
    These was no claim that Adeli shut down two Iraqi fighters with one Hawk missile.

      The "triple kill" is a complete myth. It never happened. It's a lie that is perpetuated by the US cos they want their equipment to look good.
      In reality the F14 was highly ineffective in the Iran/Iraq war because the US sabotaged the crap out of it. Remember, they were enemies of Iran and did everything to stop Iran from succeeding.

    ACTUALLY THREE. THREE MIG 23'S flying very close to eachother. I saw the pilot himself telling the story. The Phoenix missile successfully had locked on the plane on the edge by the F14 system. He manually reprogrammed it to hit the one in the middle in hope the shrapnels from the plane splashing damaging the other two Migs. In fact it did, he downed Three mig 23s flying in formation with One single Phoenix missile. It's credited as the most kills by single missile. The also have Jalil Zandi as the most successful F14 Ace with 12 Confirmed hits by Americans , according to Iranians he shot down 23 aircrafts , and hitting even more but not resulting in a kill. Zandi Could have even more kills , but hecwas imprisoned by the goverment itself questioning his loyalty to the goverment. Hecwas later released under the pressure of other Iranian pilots, and returned to war in the last year of the Iran-Iraq war and managed to down a Mig25 flying at 70,000 ft with a phoenix missile fired from F14 at 40,000 ft. Mig 25 still to date is known to be very notorious and feared , capable of flying at very high altitude @ close to Mach 4. Very difficult to hit by any means. Unfortunatey after war he was forced retired. And the. Later was killed in car accident travelling to North of Iran. How tragic that can be for an Ace to be killed in a car accident ?!

Apart from some pictures, it seems that all the footages were recorded before the revolution to use them maybe in a documentary/propaganda piece which was never made or for educational purposes. Or maybe they were simply recorded by the Americans. I say that based on how the Iranian technecians look (clean shaved, wearing navy blue and light blue) and presence of the American technicians in footages which implies they have been recorded before revolution.

    Admitting the uniqueness of Iranian pilots and the best friend or ace of F-14 pilots Fereydoun Ali Mazandarani and the F-14 fighters themselves with their long-range radar and Phoenix missiles, but there are facts about their purchase and use that are rarely discussed in such documentaries. . 1- From a commercial point of view, each of these F-14 aircrafts was purchased more expensively by ten million dollars compared to the most expensive F-35 due to the financial corruption of the Shah of Iran, and the Shah of Iran received hundreds of millions of dollars in commissions in his bank accounts in Switzerland.
    2- The F-14 fighter is a sea-based fighter to counter With the MiG-31 fighters, they carried Soviet nuclear missiles and had no use for the Iranian Air Force, so Iran was the only country that was willing to buy them, instead of Israel, Turkey, they bought F-15 and F-16.
    3- The purchase of F-14 by the Shah of Iran was accompanied by the opposition of the commanders of the Iranian Air Force.
    4- The engines of this aircraft were the same engines as the F-111, which later the American Air /Navy Forces were forced to replace with engines proposed by GE.
    5- One of the reasons for the early retirement of F-14 fighters was the collapse of the communist Soviet Union, the last of which occurred in 2006, while the F-15, F-16 and then F-18 Hornet fighters are still in service.
    6- The maintenance costs and the cost per flight hour of the F-14 were the most expensive costs of a fighter at the time.
    7- Fereydoun Ali Mazandarani, the leader of the F-14 modification team, not only replaced the Hawk missiles with the expensive Phoenix missiles, but also turned this fighter jet into a bomber by installing the bomb guidance system on the launcher.
