    Someone finally said it.
Victor saw Emily as a good friend.
Also, Victoria didn't have as much as screen time as Emily, but with the short screen time she had, is enough for me to love her and know that she loves Victor deeply. Victor and Victoria are sweet and have a tender chemistry.

Exactly! :D I never understood why so many people were unhappy with the movie's conclusion. Every single thing happened the way it should have, in my opinion! :) Emily was finally able to find the peace she needed, and Victor ended up with Victoria, his true love. Not to mention the clever symbolism displayed throughout the film, with the butterflies, flowers, etc. :)

People fall in love with Emily- I think it may be as simple as that. They want her to get the love and happiness she deserved, and they don't understand how Victor could prefer _"bland, boring"_ Victoria to someone as lively and vivacious as Emily. They can't (don't want?) to see that Victoria is equally special in her own different way, and a better match for Victor in terms of personality, character and temperament.

To those people who are hating on Victoria, listen to the deleted song for Victor after he found out that Victoria is getting married to another man titled "Erased" it explains everything that Victor is clearly NOT in love to Emily and only loved her as a friend it was removed on the film due to time limit and pretty much explains at the ending scene when Victor didn't say "I love you too" to Emily when she tell him that she loved her

    • @StoryMing

I don't think he ever says "I love you" to Victoria either; BUT he DOES tell her that when he met her he felt he should be together with her always, and their marriage couldn't come soon enough. He never once says anything like this to Emily.

Emily is amazing and I love her, and yes she does deserve so much more than she ever got and it's tragic she never did. But _Victoria_ is Victor's soulmate and counterpart-- the one best suited to him in temperament outlook and personality, the one he felt he belonged with-- and she is equally as amazing in her own right. It's just that this is not _her_ story.

I always thought it ended perfectly. Victor and Victoria belonged together. Also it would have been sad if he’d ended up with Emily. That wasn’t really what he wanted and Emily never would have been freed. I thought it was such a beautiful moment when she finally let go and turned in to butterflies. As for people who like to say Victoria has no personality she’s not given as much time as Emily but still manages her o sneak out of her house to try and find Victor help and was making an attempt to get away again after her parents barred her doors and widows. She’s shown to be brave, kind, considerate, selfless and loyal all in just a few scenes.

      Honestly, yes.
Victoria is not boring. We just don't get as much of a chance to get to know her, because she is not a main character. The movie does not focus on her; it is not her story.
She TRIED and FOUGHT as hard as she could to help Victor, or to get him some help; it's not her fault that no one would believe her. Likewise she never really had the time or opportunity to get Victor a gift (and partly that may also be because they were not married yet, which is when she would most likely give a gift, if she were going to). The wedding was arranged, but it was not forced: as Victor tells Victoria, he WANTS to marry her, very much-- he was just extremely nervous. And he is CRUSHED to find out he is too late.
Emily is able to save Victor's life, mainly because she is already dead, so she cannot be killed again. Victor spends more time with her, but it's still only about one day... and for most of that time *_she is literally holding him captive, against his will_* (--which is another thing, by the way, that Victoria _does not_ do).
Victoria may not be as lively and vivacious as Emily; and NEITHER IS VICTOR. Victor and Victoria are mirror counterparts. They are both introspective, contemplative, poetic/dreamy. They are BOTH "boring", if you want to call it that. But after all, anyone who can face up to Lord Barkis the way Victoria does when she hands him the news that There Is No Money, has definitely got some spirit and personality as far as I'm concerned. She is a very different person than Emily, but she is equally as amazing, in her way.

While I think Victor and Victoria's relationship is definitely not OTP status, I understand why they ended up together over Emily. For one. Emily's arc in the movie was not about finding love again, it was about finding peace and letting go. It wouldn't make sense if she ended up with Victor because it would undercut her entire character arc and overall story. Secondly, I agree with your assessment, Emily was not in love with Victor. She was in love with the idea of Victor. The idea of being married, the thing she wanted so much and what she died for.

My dad and I are watching horror, or Halloween, and dark movies for this whole month of October. We watched Corpse Bride a few days ago which kinda worried me a bit, as my dad never really grew to appreciate Stop-Motion as animation, and that it was a musical, something my dad isn't fond of.
Good news is he actually enjoyed it a lot. But while I was tearing up at the ending and watched Emily turn to butterflies accepting freedom, my dad was a bit irked. Saying she should have had a happy ending and be with Victor. I never saw too much in Victoria, and Emily was lovely to me, but I nowadays see the bittersweet undertones with Emily moving on and Victor/Victoria being together.
This video actually helped me. explaining better what I couldn't figure out as my set view of the ending. Because part of me loved and hated it with Victor being with either of the women but i didnt reslly know what would have actually been the best choice. I like Emily/Victor, but definitely the ending had the best choice of Victoria/Victor.

Thank you so much. Great video!
I was utterly shocked at how people bash Victoria or even Victor because Emily didn't end up with Victor in the end. Since I was a kid, I always see the ending make complete sense (or the whole plot actually). Growing up and re-watching some cuts on CZcams, oh damn the hate comments in the section are just beyond me.
It was obvious from the start that the person Victor has feelings for is Victoria. He liked Emily only as a friend, and he didn't want to hurt her, also because he was deeply hurt that Victoria's about to marry someone else - that's why he agreed to wed Emily. He has never loved her romantically. I wonder how people interpreted that way since there has been so signs in the film.
As for Emily, I think she's likely to be in love with the idea of marriage/love rather than with Victor himself. Since he accidentally put that ring on Emily, she consistently said he's her husband and showed affection for him without actually having a decent conversation with him first. If that was a different man, probably Emily would have reacted the same way. But of course, she could grow to love him for real after seeing how kind he is.
The ending makes complete sense: (this is stated/showed in the movie already lol): Emily and Victor don't belong to each other, both romantically and literally as Emily is dead.
The key point of the movie is the journey for Emily to overcome her trauma and so she could finally move on. She could not be truly happy if she just stayed the way she was in the beginning: in love with the idea of marriage to a point that may drag others in against their will. Happy ending for all 3 characters.

I personally have a theory regarding the interpersonal conflict that Victor and Victoria both experience with the Everglot family. In the scene in which the sung expository sequence takes place to the beginning melody of "According To Plan" from the perspectives of Finis and Maudeline Everglot (Victoria's parents) we can see that Victoria's parents have an underlying feeling of resentment and of contempt for their daughter as they are passing by the portraits of the different Everglot male ancestors, they reach an inverted portrait of an infant Victoria who could initially look like a baby boy at first glance. Then as they spin her portrait back into its correct orientation, Victoria's true self is thusly revealed. As her parents were passing through the hallway containing her childhood portrait, they were singing about the immense expectations that they had thrusted upon Victoria's shoulders because they were drowning in financial poverty and this information can easily be interpreted visually, however, Victoria is entrusted with responsabilities that would have more commonly been allocated or assigned to a male heir, meaning that another reason as to why their relationship is incredibly strained is because of the fact that they erroneously believe that if they had given birth to a son, their problems would have been comparatively lessened which is of course completely relative to the time period and not true at all which adds another undercurrent of complexity to Victoria's personal journey and another element of sadness to her struggles with her own self-esteem and in finding her place in a male-dominated society which has continually deprived her from the opportunity of pursuing her dreams and her most authentic expression of self in the name of supposed "traditions." I also believe that what deepened her relationship with Victor was the fact that he was immediately accepting of Victoria, never once judging any of her most deepest aspirations and goals in life. Victor is therefore deeply enamored with Victoria because of her emotional resiliency, immense situational and artistic awareness and intelligence and quiet strength, qualities which he himself also posesses but often fails to see in himself.

It's reported that at the end of the 1946 premiere of La Belle Et La Bête, the actress--some say Greta Garbo, some say Marlene Dietrich--cried out in dismay, "Give me back my Beast!" (Or words to that effect.)
This, I read, was director Jean Cocteau's intent, an inversion of the original fairy tale. Disney, on the other hand, for their The Little Mermaid, opted for a more traditional "And They Lived Happily Ever After" ending, instead of Hans Christian Andersen's more elevated and spiritual original ending, where the heroine, as Emily did, ascends to Heaven.
I cannot, by the way, take credit for picking up on the difference in Andersen's story ending. A reviewer highlighted it years ago when I was listening to a Roman Catholic radio station movie critic. But in a similar vein, my daughter once expressed her disappointment in the last Narnia story, The Last Battle. It didn't end like a stereotypical fairytale with a happy ending occurring in a typical mortal manner, but instead it was was the big apocalyptic wrap up...analogous to Christianity's Second Coming. Which is to be expected, after all. The Narnia Tales are analogous of Christianity.
Again, it's all similar to the bittersweet ending of LOTR. Frodo is unable to savor the fruits of his victory and must leave Middle Earth to be healed

Thank you so much. This video makes me so happy! I even thought I was crazy because everywhere I saw people saying Emily is better than Victoria.
I have loved Victoria's character from the beginning and Emily, even tho she was the protagonist, didn't feel right to me. I like her, I sure do, but not like Victoria.
But I couldn't pinpoint exactly what was the problem, and now I finally understood: it was all about Emily, not about her and Victor. That was what rubbed me in the wrong way. I loved when she realized she couldn't be so selfish and take the happiness of two people for her sake.
    This movie truly is perfect!

The classical songs are "Moonlight Sonata" by Bach, "C Major Prelude" by Bach, and "Gymnopedie no 1" by Satie.
I'll see if I can find the harpsichord songs since they had more generic titles. Digging through my history is a nightmare.

I love Emily and Victor together but I also love Victor and Victoria together 😭 although Victor and Victoria are “only together” due to their arranged marriage but they genuinely did care about one and other, Victoria STILL stood by Victors side when he was in the underworld and on the brink of being exiled, and unfortunately that’s when he acknowledges his relationship with Emily. Perhaps if Emily and Victor had met under different circumstances they would of been together, but ultimately both Victor and Emily’s relationship was selfish, and she couldn’t do that to Victoria, as it already happened to her. All Victoria wanted was to get married with someone she loved.

Okay okay let’s calm down on the VV ship, I understand the relationship / love triple between the three but I feel you went extremely hard on Emily. I feel Victor and Victoria was gonna end up together and honestly I feel either choice would of been good. Emily was kinda a woman of her word as she did made a promise that she would be with the one that fines her as she did try to understand him not trying to manipulate him as that’s the problem with today where people feel that kindness and manipulation is the same. Victoria needed Victor’s kindness as much as Emily needed a good man like Victor.

    • @RolloDescendant
      @RolloDescendant  Před 2 lety +21

That's an interesting point. I definitely wasn't trying to trash on Emily in the video but made conclusions based off of what I saw. Kindness certainly isn't manipulation and I may have misconstrued some of her genuine kind acts. Either way, I still think she acted selfishly which is why I'm inclined to lean towards Victor being with Victoria.
I appreciate you chiming in. It's harder to be the lone voice of one opinion in a sea chanting the opposite. However, I think Emily's character arc in the film is realizing that she has to let go and to let her soul be at peace despite not having a fair ending to her life.

Victor liked and cared about Emily. He felt compassion for her. He did not LOVE her. It was Victoria he wants to be with, the whole movie; it's when he felt he'd lost his chance with her, that he decides to stay and try to make Emily happy. "In other circumstances," as he says, he might very well have been happy enough with Emily; but Victoria was his counterpart, in personality, character, and temperament.
--All this is NOT in any way meant as a knock on Emily, who is amazing, and absolutely deserves so much more than she ever got; it is just sad that so few seem to realize that Victoria is just as equally amazing, in her own way.

At one point he plays along with Emily to trick her into allowing them to go to the world of the living. He knows there's no other chance she'll let him go unless he can somehow convince her otherwise. So for a short time he lies that he would like his parents to meet her in order to try to smooth things over with the Everglotts. (Only, then he overhears Victoria's father saying that if they ever see Victor, he'll wring his neck) at which point he visits Victoria herself.
After Emily catches him, he lays out his true feelings on the table and it's only later when he hears Victoria is going to marry someone else that he relents to marrying Emily because, at that point, he really feels he doesn't have anything to live for.

That's not 100% true. Victor's parents mentioned another woman. That was most likely Emily. Emily knew Victor's name before he told her. Emily was the lady that Victor was originally going to date and marry. Emily met Victor when she was alive. Emily has been dead for two years. There is a parallel universe where Emily listened to her parents and married Victor.

I was debating about commenting on this thread but they're referring to the plotline where there's a scandal surrounding Victor. It's very brief and easy to overlook but basically someone saw him on the bridge with Emily the day he initially runs into the woods and she takes him away to the land of the dead. That's the main reason the Everglots had to find a new husband for Victoria pronto: the town was abuzz with the new gossip of this other woman and it was already sullying their name. (Plus the original arrangement was pressing for time to begin with). It's a plot device to force the hand of Victoria's quick marriage to Lord Barkiss.
