    I have kept goats as pets in Portland off and on for about 20 years and I think that your tips are wonderful! I have some tips of my own that some may find useful as well. I found hay to be very wasteful and messy and have switched entirely to feeding pelleted orchard and timothy grass, (never alfalfa). I have had no trouble with wethers and urinary calculi with this diet. I do supplement with plenty of rough forage like fruit tree prunings and clean christmas trees. In order to combat muddy conditions in the winter, I have invested in 6 inches of packed crushed gravel for their pen. It is nearly as hard as concrete and is very beneficial for their feet. I have found it to be the easiest surface to keep really clean with simple sweeping in the Summer and raking/shoveling in the Winter when droppings get wet in the rain. Keep up the evangelizing! Goats are great.

    For some reason , I have always loved goats. Your great advice and tips are all great. I must say, that your wonderful spirit precedes the advice. They are lucky to have an owner with such a kind and loving spirit. I think that is just as important as all you have to say. God bless you !

    love all the information given in this video! all the basics were covered and there were things that i didnt even know about either, like giving your goats garlic as a dewormer (there is also some type of fur/evergreen that also is a very good dewormer, and doubles as a great snack) and owning goats in city limits, or being able to change the law to where you can have them in the city. granted, i grew up in a very small city that was more so a rural town than a city and i knew of one person who had goats in town.

    If my goat eats pumpkin or squash and garlic daily with their feed, could that be bad for their health? (Not that this is the case but I'd like to plant a garden to save on feed cost and I want to know if they can eat things like squash on a daily basis without having digestion issues)

    I started using my dog grooming stuff for my goats too and they love it! I wasn't getting anywhere with the soft brush and tried a slicker. at first I thought little Max was just being obedient but standing still but when I stopped to clean out the brush he turned to sniff it, then started rubbing his head against the bristles! I've read that kale can give goats oxalate poisoning. Or is that only in large amounts? It's a good idea to give does grain in the last 2 months of pregnancy and small amounts for growing kids to help develop their rumen and help with growth. I've also heard conflicting advice regarding grain and alfalfa for my wether (from two vets at the same hospital) about how to prevent urinary calculi. I decided to follow a study out of Purdue that basically said to feed whatever you feed but keep the Ca:Ph Ratio between 2:1 and 6:1 for wethers. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Thanks for the great video!

    I want a pet that provides milk occasionally. The biggest problem is even dwarf Nigerians are considered a farm animal and are not allowed. Which sucks. How is a 2' tall little cutie a "farm" animal. I have 1/2 acre. Can't have pot belly pigs or dwarf goats or pygmy goats.

      @jonathandarling7065 Před 9 lety +2

      If you keep Nigerian Darwfs or Pygmies even a small yard should be okay. A good rule of thumb is would two medium sized dogs have enough room in your back yard? Remember goats are herd animals so you can never have just one. If yes then your smaller sized goats should do fine as long as all of their other needs are met as well.

    I would NOT rely on "organic" banana peels being free of mutagenic pesticides.
    When he was young, my uncle had a pet goat. Wherever the children went, the goat went. She would sit in the middle of the back seat of my grandparents' very expensive car with the children all around him, even on the jump seats. Shopping, the beach...wherever...if the children were there, the goat was, too. I'm told her favorite game was hide and seek. Considering the personalities of goats in general, I don't think that's surprising.

They climb a lot and are really a nuisance if not properly fenced in. They will eat the shingles right off of a shed! Please don't act like goats are a "walk in the park"to own.
