In this video I answer a question from one my readers who asked:
Hi Evans am thinking of starting a tour company that would also source accommodation for its clients and would take clients to any destination in kenya for a reasonable fee.I have carried out a research to find out how we need to introduce ourselves in the market and also researched on things like competition and how to stand out from the rest also marketing whereby we need to network with agencies abroad and also from the east so that they can be sending us clients for a commission.I have contacted a few of them through the internet and they are positive.
Our target group is local and international tourists,honeymooners,corporates having trips and team building activities.
Our international airport here in nairobi also gets tourists who have no idea which tour company is taking care of them so the taxi drivers at the airport are also our target whereby when they bring clients we shall give them a commission based on the package the clients are taking.
So it is a noble idea but the financial part to implement it is a problem.Am passionate about it because i have worked in the hospitality industry all my life so at least i got experience and the know how.

We have 9 beautiful and unique provinces, was thinking about linking each province to a personality of a tourist using an online questionnaire. Doing that, I can create the perfect tour route directed to the needs and personality of my client.

Thanks evan. I'm considering starting a tour company in my local city ( a smallish city). We get cruise ships during summer. My tours would be cultural tours, where i take international visitors to art galleries and some stylish restaurents etc, the city has a thriving art and food scene. My only concern is art is quite niche and I'm not sure whether the sort of people who go on cruise ships would be interested in visual art or classy food? what do you know about cruise ship clients (they seem old and middle income people)
Hi no I haven't but, yes, I agree, seems the obvious thing to do. I need to to a lot more research and make up a business plan. My other main concern is I have no experience working as a tour guide. I'm a people person and I know a lot about the city in which I live, but no actual tour guide experience. However, on the plus side starting a tour guide business and being the sole operator my over heads would be low so if it doesn't go that smoothly to begin with it would not be a great financial burden (or loss). Thanks for you advice

You are suggesting that most people travel to Africa and they are more comfortable with clean cut white people (I am guessing that is what you mean by "people who look like you") who will show them around or advise them who can be trusted. And you do realise that English is one of the two official languages spoken in Kenya?
Otherwise I agree. Wearing a uniform and having professionally made marketing material are great ideas.
