Emi Koch: Breaking the Wall to Socio-Ecological Wellbeing in Fishing Villages

We're a Peruvian nonprofit using participatory storytelling and community-based research to engage learners and educators in fishing villages. They gain insights into their changing social-ecological systems in a shifting climate and industrialized planet. Through “edutainment” workshops, programs, and festivals, we provide tools and spaces to foster encounters, establishing relations between people and places, to expand our understanding of time and space. We collaborate with social and natural scientists “in the field“ to discuss their ideas with local youth, engaging students to learn alongside them. Students conduct their own research and mobilize the knowledge gathered by working with their teachers to create animations, films, photo series, maps, and more that are rooted in cultural heritage, fortified by science, and expressed through learners’ imagination. These creative productions share findings and ideas to spark conversations and shape change together.
