Let’s face it. Flea is still one of the most recognizable bassists in modern music. His bass riffs are as iconic as he is, but have you ever critically listened to Flea? You know you should look into it, but you never seem to get around to it? Let’s fix that today.
In today’s new video we’re diving into the Red Hot Chili Peppers best ever record, Blood Sugar Sex Magik. If you’re going to be a bass player, then you should know every note on this album!
In this video, Ian Allison highlights his favourite bass moments, breaks them down and shows you how to approach Flea’s masterfully funky basslines.
With this video, we’re also giving you more tools to help up your bass game. There’s a free workbook with all of the tab AND notation. It’s a must have for any serious fan of Flea’s finest four string moments.
As always, see you in the shed…
    Scott :)

During a bass player's growth, it usually goes "OMG, Flea is a god!", then "Flea's good, but kinda overrated", then back to "OMG, Flea is a god!" For me, it has stayed at that final stage once I realized what an incredible overall musician Flea is and how I enjoy listening to his playing as much, if not more, than the virtuoso shredders. Tremendous video, Ian!

You are not alone ;) I started to play guitar along with the cd. So great guitar ideas from Frusciante. Then after a while, I though that guy on bass played so nice stuff I had to try. Except I did not have a bass. Found out a friend had a crappy one so I bought it. I thought bass players played with fingers only and assumed the ´big sounds’ were when they played with their thumbs and pulled the strings, as I heard about it. That is how I started, not knowing anything else haha.

Before John Frusciante, RHCP sucked. Hillel Slovak was crap. Anthony's mouth was super filthy. Probably because he thought he had to curse a lot to try and make up for how crappy their stuff was.
But when John joined, everything got 1000% better. I think this is proved by all the songs they've done with John.
Flea is super incredible, and John is too.

Musically Nevermind doesn't really hold up today without sounding dated. BSSM can still be relevant. I would consider that a 'right place right time' album for package and sale as the scene already existed.

I actually have to listen back to all those RHCP albums, but from the top of my head, this was the first where Flea played a majority of the songs with finger style and is not slapping most of the time (or was it Mother’s Milk already). That was really a game changer. And I liked RHCP and Flea from the moment when they were support act for George Clinton and Funkadelic back in 1985 and I watched their gig on TV. So I like when Flea hammers the bass but also when he „softly“ pulls the strings.

The demonstration that groove, funkiness, rythm feeling... is on the simpliest things is "Give It Away". The bass lines on the album are all spectacular, but the easiest one: the coolest one.

8:06 - That's exactly what Rubin said in the doc - "Don't go too notey". Then Flea rips out with this crazy 16th note ejaculation as though he's punctuating Rubin's sentence for him. If you haven't seen Funky Monks - get it/watch it on CZcams/steal it. A must-see for RHCP fans. Thanks for the tutorial! I had a 5-string Fender P-Bass and got stupid and sold it.

That album was the soundtrack (on tape) of my early driving experience. Summer days (and nights) cruising in my sky blue Renault 5 (auto) with the windows down and this as loud as the oem speakers would go. The best days. Also love working this out on bass now I'm all grown up! Great vid.

According to an interview in Bass Player magazine circa 92’ Flea said the effect used in Sir Psycho Sexy was a vintage era Mutron pedal.

And in his video, adventures in spontaneous jamming and techniques, he said that it was the envelope filter pedal. And then he played it with that pedal.

Yep and I remember he said the battery was dying on the envelope filter. I bought the DOD pedal just to mimic the sound. Never got close to it 😂

Under the bridge video is why I bought a stingray 5. Saved up for ages to buy the real deal and 13 years or so on it’s still playing amazingly.

I love your analysis of Give it Away. That G restriction on the album is absolutely right, fortunately, during live shows, he does let loose and it's amazeballs.
That being said, BSSM and Californication are tied for best Chili Pepper album, IMO.

So great. I was a senior in high school when this album came out, and 2 years into playing bass. It's what made me try to learn how to slap. (I say "try to" because 30 years later I'm still not very good at it!)
