Join us on this visit to the incredible Candi Prambanan temple in Java, Indonesia. This is the largest Hindu temple in Indonesia, which is regarded as the biggest muslim country in the world by population. About a thousand years ago, Java was predominantly Hindu - which is when the temple was built. The Prambanan temple is actually an ancient temple built in honor of Gods Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva (being the main deity) here. The tickets to visit Prambanan temple are very expensive - its about IDR 375k per person for a one day ticket and we spent nearly all day from 11 am to closing time at 5 pm.

Thanks to all the kind Indonesians who clarified this: Indonesia is not an Islamic country, nor considered a "Muslim country" but rather the country with the most practicing Muslims - in reality, it's a beautiful country with diversity very much like our own home country India. So sorry for the lack of clarity while we speak in the video, but hopefully it's clear and accurate now! Thanks again for being kind and explaining this to us 🤓🤓

the real name of Prambanan temple is Siwaghra / Sivaghra .. the meaning is "The house of Siwa/Siva" .Actually, when allowed to explore the niches of the temple, there are stories carved into the temple walls. Reliefs about the Ramayana story that is completely different from the story that many people know will be beautifully presented on the wall. because Sinta is really told with a very sad story because she had to be expelled from her husband's kingdom while pregnant and had to give birth in the forest, and her twin boys were named Kusa and Lawa by Resi Valmiki in the hut in the forest. this story is what not many people know, even though it is clearly engraved there.

Only until the moment when Sinta/Sita managed to survive the flames while proving her chastity. And typical Indonesians prefer stories with beautiful endings, and will definitely not believe that the authentic Ramayana story is a sad story, especially for Sinta/Sita.

In this Video you mentioned the role of a "British colonial entity" in the discovery and reconstruction of Prambanan temple. FYI, Indonesia was known as a Dutch (and not British) colony. The British had only ruled this region for a very short time (1811 - 1816). During the peak of Napoleon era, the Netherlands, and hence also all Dutch's colonial territories became parts of the Napoleonic empire. After defeating Napoleon, the British also (shortly) "pushed" the Dutch out from their East-India colony. During this short-time, Thomas Stamford Raffles, a British, became it's Governor General. But he was, later, better known as the "founder" of Singapore. As the Wikipedia source describes, it was the Dutch (in the VOC era) who in 1733 discovered Prambanan site as a ruin of "Brahmin temples". After this, both the Dutch and also the British (during the short colonial period by Raffles) had "plans" to restore the temple, but had not done real / significant works for this. It was not until 1915 that the Dutch /Netherlands-Indie colonial government finally made serious and systematic efforts to restore the temple. These works have been taken over and continued by the Indonesian government after our independence (1945) with the support of UNESCO.

It was build for the harmony of coesxistence between religion. This thalasocracy kingdom is actually one of the most powerful kingdom in south-east asia. In fact, the restauration of prambanan temple initiated by The Dutch. The name of the temple is originally Shivagrha. Today prambanan is still used for hindu ceremonies.
Let me tell you a bit of story here 😊 :
The Mataram Kingdom today is still exist, it is called Mataram Yogyakarta but not Hindu-Buddhist, it is now based on Islam... but heavily influenced by Hindu culture. The King now is also the governor of yogyakarta. Fact : whoever the king of Mataram Yogyakarta, he/she’ll become the governor of Yogyakarta Province. Mataram Kingdom nowadays divided in 4 : Mataram Yogyakarta, Mataram Surakarta (now Surakarta city), Pakualaman (part of Yogyakarta), Mangkunegaran (part of Surakarta). The Kings are also still exist, but the one who still has political power is the Sultan of Mataram Yogyakarta. You can visit the palace to also experience the culture. There are lot’s of kingdom in all accros Indonesia & they are still exist, also with the king/queen, eventhough they don’t have political power now but they influence in Indonesia’s sosiocultural existence, to preserve the culture.

as a history buff myself, I learned from the history books that the reason the mataram dynasty shifting to the Eastern Part of Java (become Medang kingdom) was because of the volcanic eruption of Merapi (which was very frequent and still is). but this information I think needs further clarification because the new location of the kingdom (Medang under the rule of Mpu Sindok) is around present day Kediri which is also around another volcano (Kelud Volcano). anyway, Java itself has alooot of active volcano and most of these kingdoms were around one or two. I am working with an Indian myself and my boss often amused by how common for Indonesian (esp. Javanese) using sanskrit words in the names combined with Arabic names (for example: Waskita Fajar : Waskita is sankrit and Fajar is from Fajr which is arabic for morning/Sunrise)

Prambanan Temple is located in Yogyakarta, the only Monarchy in Indonesia. Although the majority of Yogyakarta residents are Muslims, we still retain some of the Hindu culture, due to the SabdoPalon Agreement when allowing Islam to enter Java.
The contents of the Sabdopalon Agreement:
    1. There should be no imposition of religious dharma or belief.
    2. If you want to build a shrine or worship building, make the outer building look Hindu-Javanese style, even though the inner content is Islamic.
    3. If an Islamic kingdom is established, the first queen must be a mixed child.
Mixed means, if the father is Hindu then the mother is Muslim. If the father is Muslim, then the mother must be Hindu.
    4. Do not turn the Javanese into Arabs or Parsi.
*Jogja is its own province, not part of Central Java.

Long time ago, Indonesia had Hindu and Buddha kingdoms. There were many Hindu and Buddha people in Indonesia before Islam was introduced by Gujarat and Parsi people. The big temple was built long time ago.

@@TheBackpacksters That's right. The Gujarati and Parsi traders brought not only goods here, but also a new religion. Islam was brought to Indonesia in a peaceful manner and it was well-received by people here. After Islam came here, the Hindu Majapahit Kingdom disappeared. The Buddhist Srivijaya Kingdom diappeared, too. However, for many centuries, Indonesian Islam has had Hindu colour (=traces) in it in everyday's life until the years 2000s. People here still hold the Javanese communal feast of seven days, thirty days and one thousand days after death, for example, which is considered to belong to Hindu culture.
