    This is GRIME... Hip Hop's cousin.
    LET ME EXPLAIN: DJ Kool Herc brought that Jamaican soundsystem culture to The Bronx in the 70s, that mixed with American Funk/Disco and gave birth to Hip Hop. That soundsystem culture came to England from Jamaica with the 1940s 'Windrush Generation' and had its own parrallel evolutionary journey, through Jungle/DnB and House & Garage music and mixed with British culture. That's why Grime MCs tend to rhyme in different pockets of the beat than Hip Hop artists, still has some of that Carribean cadence, like Dancehall toasting. GRIME is often hype like Dancehall and Electronic Garage music, as you can hear.
    A GRIME SET consists of a DJ mixing through all kinds of electronic instrumentals, usually at 140 beats per minute but not exclusively. GRIME MCs take turns spitting their lyrics one after the other. As one MC spits the other listens out for the changing 'riddim' (instrumental) and decides on which one of his tons of lyrics will match. If an MC follows with a perfect lyric, perfect flow and catches the beat as it drops, it's like sticking a perfect landing in gymnastics, the crowd goes wild and that's the ONLY time in GRIME where the music is stopped. The DJ 'wheels' back the vinyl just like in Reggae Dancehall...
    ...for perfect examples of this 'culture' check out 'Big Narstie & Kano Shutdown the Big Narstie Show...' and 'Ghetts ft Chip - Can't Run Out of Bars...' and 'BehindTheBars 001 - [Ghetts x Rudekid]'

  • @TheRevWillNotBeTelevised
    @TheRevWillNotBeTelevised Před 3 lety +47

    'Incredible' was a huge thing over here back in the 90's - I grew up on Jungle/DnB music. Also the short guy in the back Dizzee Rascal is one of the OG's of grime. UK hip-hop/rap came up through reggae>dancehall>dub>jungle>dnb>dubstep>UK garage>grime>drill (way more sub-genres and offshoots than that though). Obviously there is a US influence, but the Jamaican thing has always been far more influential as Jamaica is a former UK colony, when they got independence in the 1940s they got the right to come and live and work here. So a lot of black people in the UK are descendants of Jamaicans and they brought the culture with them.

    General Levy is legend in his own right. But I feel most Americans would’ve heard the last song ‘Incredible’ which was featured on Ali G movie ‘In Da House’. I think it reached a wider audience when that came out to people who wasn’t into the Jungle, Grime and Drum ‘n’ Bass scene in the 90’s. Or, at theist thousand who hasn’t been born.

    this is how it was in the early 2000s in London at a time when the internet was relatively new . All them Mc's in the video use to come up on pirate radio and use to clash with other Mc's and all you would hear was non stop pure bars with loads of energy. I was quite privilege to be growing up during the infancy of grime as most of the MC's lived quite local to me and as a youth back then the underground music scene was quite big. i'm 40 now but still bang out the oldskool radio sets now and again lol. I still reckon East London had the best MC's during the early era of grime . I still remember when Kano & Wiley had a clash in Jammer basement in Leytonstone. Shame camaera phones were not very common back then lol.
