- This is an unboxing and review of the tontec 3.5 inch touchscreen for the raspberry pi. During the video I install the drivers and boot the device showing console output and x-windows. I also install the touchscreen calibration tool. For more electronics stuff, please visit www.smbaker.com.

For anyone thinking of getting one, this is a _resistive_ touch screen - not _capacitive_ which all iPhones, iPads and Android devices are. This means you really have to use a proper Stylus; fingers or a piece of wood(!) are not only likely to be very inaccurate they could easily damage the screen. Its resolution is also a bit too low for serious work in X Windows, it's better suited to an at-a-glance info display screen or something like a digital photo frame (or text mode console use). Other usage scenarios for this screen could be a DIY smart alarm clock/radio, mini retro gaming console, or perhaps a small TV/Movie player (is the aspect ratio widescreen or 4:3? Looks 4:3 to me). I would probably use it as a smart home hub/control panel for things like Nest...
Thanks for the tutorial/demo/review! It was very helpful. The screen seems bright, readable, and colorful. Quite nice! For even more fun, you can enable a soft keyboard and type with the stylus! :)
wow. well i for one am certainly amazed. The patience of Job for sure. I commend you kind sir
Excelent review and tutorial. Thanks !
Great for homemade retro handheld build 😍
Thank you so much! I'm getting mine tomorrow and began to become intimidated by the false reviews of the screen not working.
I would say the reviews aren't false, but this is the only setup video I can find, and it's not exactly straight forwards so they probably set it up wrong. I'm trying to find a good one too and I've been getting put off by the exact same thing. I know this is 6 months late, so what did you end up getting? And how did it all work for you?
nice video. i was wondering if this display would work with the kali linux arm?
if buy new raspberry with lcd, need configuration or can use directly
Thank you!!!! i've had my tontec lying around for over a year and couldn't figure out what to do with it. so now its all working. But its just the beginning... need to write a simple UI app for the small screen. any ideas where I should start? X Windows programming?
Would it be possible to have like the 3.5 inch lcd screen for the console screen and another monitor for the "startx screen"? I'm new to this so thanks in advance
I only need a VT100 Emulator for my Z80 application (RS232 ->USB->VT100). Do you think this is the easy way to have a VT100 terminal?
Any small screen kit I can play video using a USB ? just for decoration on the wall art project playing a video for loop seconds
Will the screen work with retropie emulation station?
I want to ask what the refresh rate of the screen is bc I had the pi 2 with one of those using gpio pens and the refresh rate was horrible, and can u acess the Web with it and run games like munecraft?
Hi there. Can the pen.be immediately used without driver install? Thanks.
Can I use it on other computer boards?
Wht happened to the raspberries at boot up? I am using Ubuntu mate and WANT to have the raspberries at boot up but only see them on the HDMI screen not the 3.5. Do you know if there is there a way to put them on the 3.5 screen?
hey could you please provide your pre configured os as a downloadable image
I didn't know Jim Gaffigan was a maker :)
How much is it? and do they sell a non touch version do you know?
I have a 3.5 inch Smraza screen on my Pi 3 running the latest image of RetroPie, and the refresh rate is really bad. Is there a way to fix this or is it just the screen?
CarterM FSX Same issue. Found a fix?
Can it work on any device?
Thank you for using emacs!
Works with android on pi 4?
what program do you use to ssh like he did at 8:52?

could someone send me a link to this?
what this application that in windows for using ssh connect on raspberry?
Yacine Harboula I never had a pi before but I usually use software like putty to connect to Linux server via ssh.. dont know if that is unsupported for pi.. or u can Google for other ssh client program
How i convert 3.5 inch touch raspberry display to HDMI/ vga display
try disabling overscan and adjust screen resolution
Oh look how easy that was.... : / Great video.....
Why the face?
+Dylan Ellis I want to buy this but it doesn't look easy
+John Dela Cruz oh, I'm sure it cones with instructions and it's easy to just plug in :)
The instructions are adequate if you already know your way around Linux and are familiar with interacting with command line interfaces. If you're new to Linux, then I'd recommending checking out Adafruit. They have a few displays that, with the appropriate image (which they have links to), are completely plug-and-play.
+smbakeryt I think Im more worried about calibration. also I haven't been able to find them on Amazon
How would i set up this screen on my My pi 3 using Rasbian jessie? i'm having trouble getting my screen to work and you're the only person who i've found that shows how to set it up.
+Logan McCully Unfortunately, I haven't tried out a Raspbian Jessie image yet. All of my projects have been based on Wheezy -- I tend to stick with what works until dragged kicking and screaming into forced change. I do know that the first time I tried to install the screen on Wheezy I skipped the step to upgrade the distro, and it did not work. So it may be dependent on the version of the kernel or some of the support packages. If I have some time to kill, I'll try loading a Jessie image and start from there.
actually is the exact same process for Jesse installation
Can I put MicroXP or Debain on my raspberry pi?
Yes, but I wouldn't be certain on this working.
im totally new to raspberry pi. i don't know that much about coding at all. i just want to play retropie on that lcd. but at 4:11, i don't know what you're doing AT ALL. can i do that on mac? what program is that? i know i sound like an idiot, but i'm thinking of making a handheld project. i can do the external stuff like wiring, but not internal stuff like coding :p
He's remoted into his RPi. You can do this much easier on a Mac actually. If you know the IP of the Pi then just run "ssh pi@ipofpi" and then when it asks for a password, that's "raspberry" (Nothing will come up that's normal.) However I would say it's much easier to just plug the Pi into a TV or something over HDMI and run the commands he did whilst connected to the Internet and from the Terminal.
thanks, i'm still confused, because i don't know the terms of these thing and how they work, i'll learn these things on my own time, but i'll keep your comment in mid, thank you for the help :p
Can I still use HDMI if i disconnect the screen?
Caleb Garcia with my pi 2 I had a bad screen and it didn't work, I don't know about it, I am wondering the same. I am probibly going to invest in 1 bc my old one was gpio connection and this one is ribon cables so I am so excited for this one. If I get it I definitely will tell you unless some one else answers it. sorry...
Friend, does it work on Raspberry Pi 3 B ???
Please!!!
if I buy this, can I use it as just a display monitor for my pi and still use a keyboard?
or do I have to use the touch?
You can use the display functionality without using the touch capability. When I tried mine out, I used it together with an attached USB keyboard.
Oh sweet!, and can I use like a different operating system, like emulation station? or does it have to be rasebarian?
Flazam sorry I'm new to this, first that mean if u don't use the touch screen functionality I do t have to do the thing at 4:11? Because I don't know what that is or how to do that.
can it still be hooked up to the tv via hdmi with this screen installed?
same question...
Eric Hovermale yes it could
Thundergods Lightningbolt do you have reconfigure anything? Or it is just plug and watch? Thanks
No
I have one of these and it doesn't work
The only one that worked for me : github.com/goodtft/LCD-show
it's acrylic
what is the resolution of the lcd ?
You don't need to use sudo when you are root....
Mark Lewis Nerds do lol
Your automatically locked out of root for security reasons till you change the password .
Could I play retropie games with this?
Matias Pirttilahti of course you can, it's just display, but retropie doesn't support mouses, which means that you can only manipulate with keyboard/gamepad and your 3.5' display will be just like little monitor, nothing else
How would I go about setting up the Pi with the settup there? Can you get into the Term from retropi or would I have to ssh into the pi? Looking to get this for a portable system and it'd be nice to play some games too :)
maksimodnakoo t
I like nano as my editor
If only the pi could run android
Tech Skits well it can to some extent I believe
