  • This is an unboxing and review of the tontec 3.5 inch touchscreen for the raspberry pi. During the video I install the drivers and boot the device showing console output and x-windows. I also install the touchscreen calibration tool. For more electronics stuff, please visit www.smbaker.com.

    For anyone thinking of getting one, this is a _resistive_ touch screen - not _capacitive_ which all iPhones, iPads and Android devices are. This means you really have to use a proper Stylus; fingers or a piece of wood(!) are not only likely to be very inaccurate they could easily damage the screen. Its resolution is also a bit too low for serious work in X Windows, it's better suited to an at-a-glance info display screen or something like a digital photo frame (or text mode console use). Other usage scenarios for this screen could be a DIY smart alarm clock/radio, mini retro gaming console, or perhaps a small TV/Movie player (is the aspect ratio widescreen or 4:3? Looks 4:3 to me). I would probably use it as a smart home hub/control panel for things like Nest...

    Thanks for the tutorial/demo/review! It was very helpful. The screen seems bright, readable, and colorful. Quite nice! For even more fun, you can enable a soft keyboard and type with the stylus! :)

    Thank you so much! I'm getting mine tomorrow and began to become intimidated by the false reviews of the screen not working.

    • @MxCraven
      @MxCraven Před 7 lety

      I would say the reviews aren't false, but this is the only setup video I can find, and it's not exactly straight forwards so they probably set it up wrong. I'm trying to find a good one too and I've been getting put off by the exact same thing. I know this is 6 months late, so what did you end up getting? And how did it all work for you?

    • @smbakeryt
      @smbakeryt  Před 8 lety

      The instructions are adequate if you already know your way around Linux and are familiar with interacting with command line interfaces. If you're new to Linux, then I'd recommending checking out Adafruit. They have a few displays that, with the appropriate image (which they have links to), are completely plug-and-play.

    How would i set up this screen on my My pi 3 using Rasbian jessie? i'm having trouble getting my screen to work and you're the only person who i've found that shows how to set it up.

    • @smbakeryt
      @smbakeryt  Před 8 lety

      +Logan McCully Unfortunately, I haven't tried out a Raspbian Jessie image yet. All of my projects have been based on Wheezy -- I tend to stick with what works until dragged kicking and screaming into forced change. I do know that the first time I tried to install the screen on Wheezy I skipped the step to upgrade the distro, and it did not work. So it may be dependent on the version of the kernel or some of the support packages. If I have some time to kill, I'll try loading a Jessie image and start from there.

    • @thetechbohemian6467
      @thetechbohemian6467 Před 8 lety

      actually is the exact same process for Jesse installation

    im totally new to raspberry pi. i don't know that much about coding at all. i just want to play retropie on that lcd. but at 4:11, i don't know what you're doing AT ALL. can i do that on mac? what program is that? i know i sound like an idiot, but i'm thinking of making a handheld project. i can do the external stuff like wiring, but not internal stuff like coding :p

    • @MxCraven
      @MxCraven Před 7 lety

      He's remoted into his RPi. You can do this much easier on a Mac actually. If you know the IP of the Pi then just run "ssh pi@ipofpi" and then when it asks for a password, that's "raspberry" (Nothing will come up that's normal.) However I would say it's much easier to just plug the Pi into a TV or something over HDMI and run the commands he did whilst connected to the Internet and from the Terminal.

I am probibly going to invest in 1 bc my old one was gpio connection and this one is ribon cables so I am so excited for this one. If I get it I definitely will tell you unless some one else answers it. sorry...

    • @smbakeryt

      You can use the display functionality without using the touch capability. When I tried mine out, I used it together with an attached USB keyboard.

      Matias Pirttilahti of course you can, it's just display, but retropie doesn't support mouses, which means that you can only manipulate with keyboard/gamepad and your 3.5' display will be just like little monitor, nothing else
