    I'm surprised there's anything left in there to burn.
    This is part of the old Seaview Asylum farm complex. The wide open floors are for tuberculosis patients who were thought to have benefitted from fresh air and sunshine. This entire complex once was around 350 acres and was self-supporting, growing produce enough to support themselves and sell the excess to the outside communities.
    The majority of the hospital has been either phased out or consolidated with other services or sold off and developed.
    Just thought I'd share a little history.

      @terrisomers7843 Thanks for the tidbit of history about the place. I love old places like this, especially castles!! I lived outside of Poughkeepsie, NY where the Hudson River Psychiatric Hospitals were. They were beautiful old buildings, but most are gone now, and redevelopment had begun a couple or so years ago. Sad to see these old buildings get let go or burnt down, but one of the reasons I heard the Psych Center was being taken down was due to asbestos and lead paints. There was also a place called Bennett College in Millbrook, NY that went through different places over time. They have now demolished the beautiful building and made condos/apts. Lived and went to F.D. Roosevelt High School in Hyde Park, NY, so that history along with Vanderbilt and more are all within minutes of my old stomping grounds!!!

    I think what impresses me the most about the FDNY is how thorough they are. They do everything they can to make sure they don’t get a call back. Not many around here do that. They also have a fire line on the big ones after going under control. It was a very cold day to drive over to Statin Island. But you got a great video out of it.

    Wow. What a liability leaving this building standing vacant. It's a tremendously hazardous building. I am a person who likes to see older building preserved and reused. But there is nothing you can do with this to repurpose this. It needs to be leveled. Thank you FDNY for the great job always. Thank you Skyler for showing us this building. God's blessings to everyone here. God's Blessings to you Skyler. Please stay safe, healthy and warm. 🚒🤗🎉

    Searching this building,both secondary and primary must have taken a while due to the size of this vacant structure.With the wind chill,that makes it a challenge for those FDNY members,and yes,very happy there were no injuries to anyone.Thanks again for braving the elements,Skyler😊😊😊.

Massive respect for what your members have to deal with in addition to the fire! I spent 10 years as the Tech Services Manager for a 7 city emergency dispatch in CA just south of LA. Gained so much respect for and knowledge from 7 police and 7 fire/EMS departments folks.

    • @Narutakikun
      @Narutakikun Před 7 měsíci

      It’s been explored by Urbexers before. Basically, it was built near the turn of the 20th century as the tuberculosis sanitorium of a larger hospital complex, most of which is still open just behind it. Back in the day, keeping tuberculosis sufferers separate from the rest of the patients was really important because tuberculosis was *very* contagious, and an outbreak among already-sick people would be a disaster. That’s why they had their own separate building. By mid-century, tuberculosis was much less common and more treatable, so the sanitorium closed in the early 60s and has stood there abandoned ever since. It should have been demolished ages ago, but New York’s bureaucracy and spending priorities being what they are, it’s still there.
