  • How do you eliminate a monotone voice? Most voices have 20 to 30 notes in them, yet we tend to hover around the same two or three notes all of the time. Here's an exercise you can do called a "slide."
Imagine the word HEY starts at the top of your head and travels down the body like an elevator. Can you start on a high pitch and end on low pitch?

I only found out when I'm finally in my mid 20's that I've been monotonous my whole life.. so I started practicing by reading books out loud. It really hurts my throat but I hope that when I finally make progress, I'll get used to the non-monotonous voice and not feel pain in my throat.

Vocal muscles are just like any muscles you dont use you lose, so essentially people who are self concious of their voice might have underdeveloped vocal muscles.

Hey Cathy, thanks for the vid. I am very monotoned and it has destroyed many relationships and potential friendships. My social status and confidence is almost non-existent. I am now trying everything in my power to overcome this thing, so I have a few questions:
    1. Can being monotone be a sign of a speech pathology?
    2. Issues dealing with speech is usually a Broca's area problem. Is there some form of therapy that can correct how your brain processes speech?
    3. With the lesson in this vid using different pitches, is there a preferred pitch to use that exudes more confidence or humor? For example, would the 12345 be used by someone who would be perceived as humorous, confident or intelligent or would that be the 54321? In other words, what patterns of tone are most preferred by listeners? (If that makes sense).
    Thank you for your time

@@FactsChannel-vs4vt I haven't seen a speech pathologist and I never received a reply on this comment. Instead, I have practiced speaking in a really deep voice for 60 sec for a total of 3 sets using vowels O, U and A. I've been doing this off and on and it has def strengthened my vocal cords by, I'd say, 15% percent or so. However, it's temporary and will not last more than one week without consistent training.
As far as the brain-tongue connection, I am still a bit monotoned but I speak a little louder when I strengthen my voice. It makes the voice carry a bit more, so it gives the illusion of confidence

Best way, find a person in media whose voice you like. Watch clips of them. Imitate them in voice recording. Do it again. Again. Keep going till you're able to imitate them reliably.
Next is the hardest step. Bringing their speech pattern to the rest of your life. Practise imitating them in unscripted scenarios. Describing your house. Record, evaluate.
Finally, bring the energy into conversations with people. It will feel weird. But stay conscious of it. You have to be thinking about it until your bad habits are finally broken.
      Good luck.

It's really shocking that people find my voice to be unenthusiastic and I'm at a point where I adopted it as a part of my identity
One main reason I don't like changing the tone of my voice is because I think I would be faking it, and my way of being authentic is to just talk without thinking about pitch. I come across as passionless and tired but I'm not.
It's almost weird to me how many people all at once told me that there's something wrong with my voice, and every time I try to add some variation I end up feeling fake and pretentious. It's like a dilemma, either change to please people or stay me and be off putting
