- Jess and I work on decorating our basement after the remodel. I organize and catalogue all of my books, and then Jess and I go shopping for decor at T.J. Maxx & Target for our shelves.

I love it when you pick the vlog back up and inform us that time has passed - it feels like a letter in a Victorian novel: “I have not had time to write these many days…” 😂
Decor idea that worked for me: Instead of buying generic decor at Home Goods or Hobby Lobby, buy one nice piece of decor when you visit a new place on vacation. You tend to stay in love with your decor pieces when there’s a memory behind it. Buying a pretty frame or a small lamp or a painting will be more appealing than throw-away decor from Target.
I just decorate with the things I genuinely love. And then I’m always happy with how it looks. I hate stuff just for the sake of stuff. It’s gotta be functional, or something I love, or I don’t want it.
Leave it empty for now - and as you collect stuff you actually love, use those things to decorate. Kids drawings, little knick knacks, all that stuff. ♥️
I agree, a home should not feel like a staged space. But these two love spending for the sake of spending and it results in So. Much. Clutter!

The hard part about the internet is that it’s taught us that decor for decor’s sake is the way to go. The decor doesn’t mean anything, right? I love that at the top you said that you guys were trying to start to be more intentional about what you have and what you display, so I’ll drop this nugget here: although this looks very nice, y’all are TRAVELERS! Start looking at your “souvenirs” as decor items. Buy art, vases, old books in interesting places and incorporate your memories in these same kind of items. ❤
The basement is absolutely gorgeous!! Brady is a creative genius & an insanely talented carpenter! I don't know how he had the foresight to design it the way he did [I know it's based off his own basement], but I can not get over how incredibly beautiful it is. Also, your personal selections like the carpet, the couch, etc. are all perfection. I love everything you all have done. I know a lot of time, money, energy, blood, sweat & tears has gone into that project, but it was well worth the investment in every sense. The result is absolutely stunning!! I'm so happy for y'all.🎉
My grandfather will write his initials with the month and year in the front of a book that he finished reading. I've read some books that he's read before and it's sweet to see when he read it. Might be a good idea for you to track which ones you've read before. Handwritten stuff is so special ❤

Jessica did a great job. The globe thing that Tyler showed in beginning should be placed on a higher shelf. I feel like it should be a stand alone decor. It’s really cool!

I am LOVING this Braun book content!! I have been watching Jessica's channel since before y'all were engaged and I feel like we are quietly (well, mostly me) growing up together. I have slowly fallen more in love with reading over the years and I always love the book portion each year in vlogmas so I love seeing it here in the vlogs too! Also, I love organization so the whole bookshelf organization, perfection. I would watch a video of just the books. AND that you're watching Bob's Burgers while cataloging lol I feel like we would be friends in real life. Excited to see the final basement video, congrats! Brady is so talented!

Winning at parenting is launching a hot spot in the car! 🙌🏼 Once we discovered this during the melting down times, game changer.
I can't believe a kid needs to always be entertained just riding from home to a department store. That and this constant giving their kids snacks. Every new mom youtuber seems to do this. My daughter was born before there were "hot spots" and just sat in her car seat without food and entertainment and I never had an issue. And yes, she would have tantrums at times, but i never gave in....Kids have to be taught that sometimes life sucks and you don't always get your way.

One decorating tip I learned-put the taller item on the left as the eye naturally moves left to right and it flows better-the globe on bottom right shelf I think would look best reversed with the other smaller object. But I LOVE your family room and your style! And of course-LOVE all your videos!😊😊😊

Jess-have you given thought to using led flameless candles in your shelf design? I just incorporated some into some shelves that I got & they look great-without having to worry about lighting an actual candle. Plus-added bonus is they come with a remote and can be set on timers. Love the vlog, you guys! And thanks to Tyler for mentioning the awesome

When my husband and I downsized, I had to kiss goodbye a bunch of books, but lots of them are in totes... I saved them..........Seeing all your books,.....I actually felt my throat catch.

I have bookshelf envy big time! I used to have a huge collection of books. I’ve given quite a lot away. I just can’t hold books easily anymore. Damn arthritis & carpal tunnel. The basement beautiful. Can’t wait for the tour. Thank you for recommending Ted Lasso & talking about it. It’s one of the funniest & heartwarming comedies. I’m going to be devastated when it ends. They have really pretty ones that look like lanterns on Amazon. I love mine!
For the candle stick holders, get some tapered candles and let them burn down (upstairs or something) then blow them out when they’re at the right height for the space!

That dining room is awesome you should host Easter! Vlog it! Shelves look good. You can always go to a thrift store for cool inexpensive items that are interesting to use. A mix of old and new makes it interesting. I am excited for the office move too woo!

Anyone else confused around 10:14 when there are small square knobs on the cabinets then the wider shot shows the longer skinny handles on what appears to be the same cabinet?

Took me forever to figure out what you guys were talking about! Ok so the skinnier kids books are on the OTHER side of the room (under the TV) and those cabinets have the square knobs

Put the atlas on the bottom right shelf with the globe on top!
The tapers could go where the tiny frames are by the TV. And the globe should go on the top right shelf, mirroring the Atlas in the opposite corner. Def keep the pampas grass vase where it is!

Absolutely love you guys! Great job with the basement decorating! One thing I thought about as you were showing the big atlas book was to maybe set the globe on top of it and if it needs more height, add some other ‘map’ type books under it.

I am currently in a studio flat and I had to down size my collection drastically it was not practical - audiobooks and ebooks have become favourite ways to consume reading material but you cant display that on shelves. One of these times that I rearrange my shelves I will actually remember to log them digitally. But for now, that 400 some books are just living in my mind (somewhere lol). I love the system of stamp + digital log you used.
I "style" my shelves but they are literally just so many little pieces of geek tied in with all my movies and books crammed into every shelf

About to read my first bill Bryson book I got his name from your recommendations. I found one summer at goodwill for 99 cents. Almost new copy. And love the idea of cataloging with that app. Thanks for the tip.
