- The late great Rue McClanahan, aka Blanche Deveraux of the Golden Girls, was the replacement for original broadway lead, Carole Shelley, making Rue the second woman to play Madame Morrible in Wicked Broadway. These clips were taken from her last show on 8th January 2006 alongside Megan Hilty and Shoshana Bean.

I was fortunate to see her in this role in NYC. ❤❤❤❤❤
This era was my musical theatre days, brings back such amazing memories seeing this cast back then. Sho Meg and Rue… icons.
I had no idea she played this role!! Now I find it hard seeing anyone else as Morrible! RIP legend 🙏💖
Indeed, I was so surprised when i found out Rue was in Wicked
@@Broadwayriah same as well
I was 15 and got to see Wicked on Broadway with Shoshana, Megan, Rue McClanahan, and Ben Vereen! Stellar cast! It was Shoshanna's last week on Broadway!
omg you’re so lucky!!
@@Broadwayriah It was my first time seeing the show AND my first Broadway show! One of the best casts IMO. I got to meet them at the stage door too! Back when stage dooring was beginning to just take off.
not even fair such a good cast
this was the year I was born
What a CAST holy!!
many years i have waited for footage of rue as morrible to appear!
FOUR YEARS BEFORE SHE DIED!?! I hope I could have even a fraction of that career!
I never knew she did broadway so late in her life, I bet Betty was once in the audience supporting her!
Maybe Bea and Estelle had seen Rue in Wicked as well.
@@NinjaNiko9 Bea maybe but Estelle was too sick to attend
I saw Rue perform in this in 2005 with Ben Vereen as the Wizard. Shoshana was "out" that night, and her standby, who was also ill, had to go on!! Marvelous with Rue & Ben.
Oh wow -- I just came across a photo of her in costume and someone linked to here. I had no idea she did this. She was wonderful in the filmed production of Nunsense so I'm not at all surprised they booked her for Wicked!
My first time seeing Wicked was in 2005 (for my 13th b-day) w/ her as Morrible 🥹❤️ - also saw Shoshana Bean, Megan Hilty, and Ben Vereen… such a wonderful cast for my first time!
she was oh soo good in this.
A packed stage and you only see her.
She did excellent in this role!!! I love it!!
Thanks for this footage. So happy Rue got to star in this massive hit.
The Wizard and I from the cast recording was the first song I ever heard from Wicked and I listened to it all the time before I had no idea what the show was exactly about. I thought the nice sounding older woman was going to help "Miss Elphaba" meet the wizard how nice lol.
so good
I’m crying. Thank you so much for uploading this. I have searched so long for clips of Rue in this role.
Thanks for uploading
I’ve been walking around going “I-EEYY!” all day 😩😂😂
Never knew she did this!!
I heard rue was in wicked. She was really good
Thank you so so much for uploading this! I have searched and searched the internet just to see footage of Rue in this role! So excited to finally get to see some. I can only imagine how awesome it was to see this in person
"Thank you for being a Foe"
There was a TV movie about L. Frank Baum where she played Matilda Gage, Baum’s mother-in-law. I think it’s interesting that she was in two Oz projects.
Three actually! She played a secretary in a 1970s tv film about Judy Garland!
watching shoshana bean and rue on the same stage… I would’ve payed THOUSANDS
I remember hearing that Rue was awful in this role, but quite honestly, I don’t mind her performance here. The way she says “talent” during the pre-Wizard and I scene is pretty fun!
A Golden Girl playing Madame Morrible???!!!!
AMAZING ISNT IT???? 😭
@@Broadwayriah yes it is
Could you imagine Bea Arthur in the role.
fr if only Wicked had opened earlier, we were robbed of Bea as Morrible
@@Broadwayriah She was still alive then. She died in 2009.
Rue was playing Morrible in Wicked just before I moved from CA to WA in 1999.....she was at San Fran, and I didn't get to see the show because we were moving....one of my biggest regrets
where might I find the full show???
Alexandra's Morrible kind of reminds me of hers
Can someone please direct me to where I can see this full show?
go to bilibili.com and search “Wicked 8 January 2006” or “Wicked Rue McClanahan”. The full show will pop up
@@Broadwayriah I’ve tried that and I cannot find the full video. Link?
apparently the og was taken down but someone else has reuploaded it as Wicked shoshana bean. Here you go:

How long did she play Madame Morrible?
If i’m not mistaken she joined some time in May 2005, so she didnt stay very long
May 2005 to January 2006. This is actually her last show. It was Shoshana’s as well. They left together.
That’s a totally standard contract time. And ‘not long’ ?!
they’re just asking for the duration of her time in the role, don’t overanalyse
Is that Megan Hilty as Glinda?
yes
