Deedee Magno Hall (Nessarose), Carmen Cusack (Elphaba), and Brad Weinstock (Boq) perform The Wicked Witch of the East on the 1st national tour of Wicked. December 12th, 2007.
From what I've read, there was apparently too much dialogue that couldn't be cut and they were worried it would give away too much of the story. Which is a shame, because both the acting and the vocals are just too damn good!
Okay, so I'm not crazy! I saw the at back in line 2007, bought the cast recording in 2009 and it wasn't on there so I assumed I imagined it but also knew I *absolutely didnt.* So glad I found this finally
There is so much about this performance that is perfect. The shady delayed “Madam.” Deedee basically rolling her ankles with every step like the slippers are controlling her steps and she has to balance herself, Carmen’s look of exasperation when Nessa fucks up. And Deedee is the only Nessa I’ve seen who’s actually screamed in horror when seeing Boq transformed. That desperate “It was ELPHABA” was everything. Just a perfect scene.
Deedee is incredible. I've seen many good Nessa's that are amazing, but Deedee brings this character to another level and makes every one of her short scenes stand out.
I’ve gone down a black hole of watching every Nessa performance I can find. Deedee is the best. Feels the most real from her. And the best reaction to seeing baq as Tinman. Seriously she deserves some awards
6:27 is just so heartbreaking and beautiful. Her delivery is gorgeous, it's such a moving and humanizing moment for the character and the lyrical and melodic ties to various other songs in the show are so fantastic. I'm really glad they added it in the adaption, and Deedee's performance here is wonderful. It's a huge shame there isn't a professional recording (I guess they had to make room for March of the Witch Hunters lmao)
I wish that they’d re-record this song with the OBC; I’m certain all of them (Michelle, Idina, and Chris) all still have the ability to perform the number, and it would have been such a great 20th anniversary surprise!
I think the spoilers were one reason for omitting it. The other reason being that they would've had to remove a lot of dialogue to make it suitable for an album. But then if you cut out most of the dialogue, you have a song that doesn't really flow or make sense. It has so many different sections musically. It's more like several small songs, rather than one. "all of my life I've depended on you...", the spell casting, "lost your heart, well we'll see about that...", "save him please...". They're each fairly isolated pieces of musc within a bigger scene.
I want it on the soundtrack so bad it’s not even a spoiler to me anymore. I think there are other spoilers in the soundtrack as well, so why not add this one too?
Unfortunately, I lost it on my old computer, so now I just have these clips that I'd uploaded. You can probably find it floating around out there somewhere though. It's from December 12th, 2007 in St. Louis, Missouri.
how could they not put this song on the cast recording...
It still pisses me off to this day that they didn’t do it, the closest to a clear recording with the original cast is them workshopping the song

Couldn’t agree more, this is like top 3 songs in the show for me
I feel like the movie might be our best bet of getting a definitive recording, so fingers crossed that cast does this song justice

indeed sheis, I got a kiss on my cheek at the stag door closing night in Sam Francisco
Holy geez, one of the best acted Nessaroses I have ever seen

she was here TO ACT
She SERVED for real
SHE FEASTED THAT NESSA ROLE UP! 😍😍😍
Carmen's "I can't with this B..." look after Nessa casts the spell is priceless. "I'm so done with you right now, you impulsive, impudent child."
She ATE that up!
She is so talented here. I discovered her recently because of Steven Universe where she voiced Pearl.

I heard this was never on the soundtrack because it was such a huge spoiler. Is that true?

Shame it was never included on the soundtrack :( "The wicked witch of the east............."
I want it on the soundtrack so bad it’s not even a spoiler to me anymore. I think there are other spoilers in the soundtrack as well, so why not add this one too?
Those lines are so over the top. Makes the character of Nessa seem like a comedy relief instead of dramatic tragedy story.
Pearl???

Do you have this casts full show?
Unfortunately, I lost it on my old computer, so now I just have these clips that I'd uploaded. You can probably find it floating around out there somewhere though. It's from December 12th, 2007 in St. Louis, Missouri.
