I'm the same. Pro drummer that needed to drink before performances due to anxiety. Also became an alcoholic. Nearly bit this bullet. Rip Bonham.

If you’re a rock musician, especially one that studies rock history; the myth, legend, hype surrounding Bonzo often overshadows the facts regarding his style, technique, and musicianship. He was an extremely talented, unique, and gifted drummer. I believe however that he was a simple country boy at heart, who valued his family, friends, and home above all else. Imo his drinking escalated in a big part because of his feelings of homesickness, loneliness, and isolation while on tour and even in the studio. While all of us who have performed live in some way have moments of anxiety and self-doubt (it’s inevitable and human), I don’t believe anyone that consistently played the drums with such power, swing, finesse, and nuance wouldn’t have a decent degree of self confidence in their abilities.
The road killed him. Alcohol was just the tool it used to kill him.Just my take on it!
