    The most frustrating "railfans" (I use quotation marks on purpose) to me are those who are so firmly stuck in the past that they deride everything new as "trash" or similar without having any idea about said new thing. This happened a ton with Caltrain electrification for example. To any normal observer, the new KISSes are undoubtably a massive improvement for the performance and potential of Caltrain. Far better acceleration, more environmentally friendly (at least for the immediate area), lower dwell times than gallery cars and visually a huge jump into current times. They are trains you can actually show off with.
    Yet wouldn't you know it, loads of "railfans" defended the hell out of the F40s and gallery cars, despite the fact that they are bulky, cumbersome and outdated designs that (in the case of the cars) should've gone out of service decades ago. These people don't actually support railroads as a means of meaningful transport, they see them as open-air museums where they can observe their favourite dinosaurs for free. That's why I use quotation marks for them. I believe a real railfan has to have an eye for the everyday operations of a company/service and has to be mature enough to realise that what they might personally prefer, might not actually be best anymore for the operator.

    • @BNSF1458
      @BNSF1458  Před 7 měsíci +2

    If I have to name my self one, I'd be like a ... Lone Wolf. I don't want to railfan with anyone, let me do what I want in peace without anyone to drag behind.
    I thought of some more if you care to make a part two:
    -The annoying ass 7-14 year olds who won't shut up and think they know everything. I'm not a hateful person, but I keep my distance when I see these things
    -The retired engineer who has a plethora of interesting stories and knowledge
    -The guy getting info for his "Proto-Freelance" model railroad
    -The incredibly loyal people to a railroad or an area or whatever and everything else either they don't care about or hate
    -The One-Upper. You tell a cool story and this person always has to one-up your story and everyone elses
    -The idiot. There's always someone asking all the questions, but let's face we've all been that person. The number of answers they get is proportional to how annoying they are
    -The Heritage Unit collector. No explanation needed
    -The Trespasser
    -The guy with terabytes of videos
    -The Crazy Camera Guy with all the bells and whistles and messes with the settings between every train
    -The Radiofanner
    -The chillaxed old guy who sits by a train line, grabs a beer and his rocking chair and waits
    -The people who go for not-really trains like Trams or Subways
    -The Logger. Someone who records every train and everything about it.
    -The guy who always has a railfanning possi/group he goes out with
    -The Tourist who just goes to the museums or just comes out of his cave when he hears a heritage unit is in town
    -The guy who has nine million videos of the same trains and thinks they're unique

    Now in the major city’s they run passenger trains 24/7 and foamers just sit at a station and film them at the same place at the same time. I try not to do this cuz everyone in the train spotting/Railfanning community hates them so any opportunity I get i head to get freight. Great video :)

    This is coming from the manager of this channel since I love to watch your videos! We have 3 different railfans on our team, each a little different and just as enjoyable. I railfan too and see myself as an informative type of person who really likes to spend time learning and telling about history on railroading. I like to know a bit of everything, especially if I meet new railfanners who like to learn, it's fun! Thanks for this video, it is pretty cool that you make these videos and would like to see a part two! You are speaking straight facts! I would also say I am a person from the past a bit, not liking ALCs, Chargers, you get the memo. I am more of a classic and vintage locomotive and historical enjoyer. At least none of us are foamers haha! I've met some before, most are really nice and relaxed, and if they are on any of our videos we just smile and roll with it, I do tend to ask the editor to edit the sounds out sometimes if it gets a little hectic. The thing I love about living in northern Vermont is that there are very few railfans up here. I love going out alone or just with another local. No screaming, no foaming over crap. Being more on the introverted side, I almost prefer being alone when railfanning unless it is one of my friends. The only time I have actually "screamed" at anything was when I was driving home from work in April 2017 and heard the St Albans dispatcher giving track south to BC Rail 4611. And it was more of a surpried WTF at hearing the scanner traffic than foaming over a train. Having never seen BC Rail in Vermont before and not having any heads up I was quite surprised. Needless to say I did not foam over the train at all. just chased it like any sane railfan.

    Nice video man! I love all locomotives, steam, diesel, electric, whatever! I will say the one thing that, I guess you could say "annoyed" me was all the comments on the one video where the Big Boy assisted a stalled freight, and people were saying "THE BIG BOY SHOVED A TRAIN OVER THE HILL BECAUSE ALL OF THE LOCOMOTIVES ON THE HEAD END BROKE DOWN!", to which I tried to tell them, you can't stick ANY locomotive, especially the Big Boy the rear of a train with nothing on the head end operating, because you could end up at least breaking knuckles, or at worst, pushing cars off the track and causing a derailment! And all the responses I got were, "THE BIG BOY IS STRONGER THAN 10 DIESEL LOCOMOTIVES, THE BIG BOY CAN HAUL A 5 MILE LONG TRAIN, etc, etc!", and I like, "NO FREAKING DUH, PEOPLE! that why you DON'T put that much horsepower on the rear without having a single operating locomotive on the head end!" That is in no way saying the Big Boy can't handle the train, but everything to do with possibly not shoving cars off the track and jeopardizing the locomotive or the safety of the crew running it and causing an even bigger problem! Okay sorry for the rant, but I feel some people get way to, I guess you would say, "caught up in the moment", and just start pushing hot takes around.

    Very interesting of the different types of railfans. I am pretty much just a regular railfan, with aspects of a nerd railfan (so to speak). I'll admit, in the past, I did have opinions of gevos and locomotives in the past (depending on what locomotive it was), but I didn't really think things through too much then. I probably was a foamer in a way, but over time I improved myself and became a regular railfan but with some nerdy aspects. I'll also admit when, I unexpectedly see a specially painted locomotive, fallen flag, or something, I can get a little excited, sometimes too excited; I don't mean to get too excited, it just unexpectedly happens, but I do work on with not get too excited best I can. I also have opinions about some things, and maybe criticize them (unintentionally), but I always make sure to say my thoughts/opinions as respectfully as I can. I may have opinions like anyone else does, but I try to keep them as basic and respectful as can be.
    In short of it all. While I may have opinions and thoughts, I try to say them as respectfully as I can and keep things plain and simple enjoying railfanning and what I like. That's how I do things the best I can.

    I’m not too sure what type of Railfan I am, though I am someone that doesn’t have the best equipment but still works with what I’ve got. This also means little to no editing, and there might be some people who like content that’s generally raw and uncut. I may not fit any particular category. I’m a Big Norfolk Southern fan, and I really like Dash 9s & C6Ms. (As mentioned before, I might be the only person who’s crazy for any & all Waveform units)
    I almost never say anything during my Railfan Videos, so I’m very quiet and focused on the motive power coming my way. While I admittingly often care only about the locomotives themselves, I still make sure to capture the entire train as long as I don’t run into storage issues. I sometimes wave at the crews to see if they’ll notice me, but not in an overly excited way or anything.
    I do use the NSDash9 website to keep track of any loco info and I check the website every day basically. I’ll use it to detail the former number of each AC44C6M I capture in the video descriptions. I’m the kind of person who really cares about the Unit numbers and Designations, so I always detail those for every Railfan video I do.
    Idk how I do it, but I’m somehow very good at keeping myself composed even when there’s an HU or special unit of any kind in front of me.(like NS 4005 or 1067 for example) I may get excited in my mind, but I still manage to control myself in the moment.
    I don’t mean for this to come off as being all about me or anything, I just wanted to describe myself as a Railfan.

I do enjoy doing rollbys in order to read the build dates on cars and such. Always neat to see how old some cars still in service are. (Oldest I've seen yet was 1970)
    On the GEVO point. I hate them from a railfan perspective but love them from a railroader perspective. They're by far the most comfortable and quiet engines out there (with the exception of maybe the odd SD75I) so they're the best to work with.

    • @157RANDOM
      @157RANDOM Před 7 měsíci

      @BNSF1458 Yea. As for the other units we use. SD75Is (5600 and 5700 series) are quiet but old and not as comfortable (also they have no AC so in the summer you cook). SD70M-2s (8800 and 8900 series) are terrible, even isolated cabs are loud, and they always smell terrible, like the AC was plumbed through the bathroom. Dash 9s (2200, 2500, and 2600 series) are middling, not terrible but showing their age. The early 2500 series Dash 9s with the Canadian Comfort Cabs are louder but have more comfortable seats.
      CN has a neat roster of engines, but the GEVOs are by far the best for crews.
