Australia fires: Misleading maps and pictures go viral - BBC News

  • Maps and pictures of Australia's unprecedented bushfires have spread widely on social media. Users are posting them to raise awareness of the devastating fires, but some of the viral maps are misleading, spreading disinformation about the crisis.
One image shared widely by Twitter users, including by singer Rihanna, was interpreted as a map showing the live extent of fire spread, with large sections of the Australian coastline molten-red and fiery. But it is actually artist Anthony Hearsey's visualisation of one month of data of locations where fire was detected, collected by Nasa's Fire Information for Resource Management System.
Australia is fighting one of its worst bushfire seasons, fuelled by record-breaking temperatures and months of severe drought.
Since September, at least 25 people have died and thousands have been made homeless.
More than 6.3 million hectares (63,000 sq km or 15.6 million acres) have been burned so far - one hectare is roughly the size of a sports field.

      Problem in your report!
7:10 - you say that greens in turn say that they support back burning and hazard reduction, this however does NOT mean that they would intend to carry out these actions or permit the relinquishment of laws to better allow for personal removal of vegetation to further this goal.
Let me say the same thing as an example to prove my point:
I support back burning, but I do not permit the ACT of back burning.
SEE... big difference. This point is moot. We all know the Greens have been attempting to disallow vegetation removal and extend nature reserves to as many places as possible. EVERY Australian knows this!

Yes, indeed and of course. And you are right, but keep in mind that humans are more resourceful, and have way more assistance than wild animals. Those animals have no assurance, they do not have assistance, they are alone, they are panicking and they are lost. Countless of them died, burned to death. They are a very important part of the environment, without them, trees and plants can't reproduce, and if we don't save them... you can be sure that Australia gonna be a giant desert just in a few decades or less. Keep that in mind too. But yes, again, and I agree with you on that point... people and the media focus their attention mostly on animals for some strange reason. But in some way, there is a reason for that, and you know why now -- But don't worry, people are aware of those terrible humans loss because of those fires!

In case you're wondering how the fires started here are some facts:
Australia has hottest year on record, then hottest December on record, then hottest day on record then another hottest day on record,
    Australia has massive drought,
Australian government allows large scale water stealing heavily reducing the amount of water in drought struck areas, (this killed over 1 million river fish)
New South Wales state government reduces firefighting funding by 75%
Australian government refuses to talk to the "Greeny firefighters" because they believe in climate change and that large bush fires will become common
Finally, Australia is extremely hot, with almost no water. Lightning then strikes starting some small fires, the firefighters don't have enough funding to stop them, then as the fires get bigger more and more accidental fires are created, arsonists also start making small fires. Eventually the fire services are completely overwhelmed and what should be an easy fix now becomes a multi-state catastrophe.

Fire chiefs have corrected the misinformation that over-regulation or environmentalists have prevented hazard reduction. It’s mainly lack of opportunity due to the longer fire season and shorter , hotter, dryer winters. Ie, far fewer days when it’s safe to control burn. Plus cuts to staffing and budgets leaving the burns to the volunteer fire brigades who work full time in their real jobs. The Green Party supports hazard reduction and control burns. A coordinated bot campaign has been pushing the line blaming environmentalists. It’s simply not true.

This is still very much up for debate. The regulations involving fire prevention measures to be undertaken by private citizens and small organisations are horrendously complex . It is certainly true that extensive areas of national parks have been allowed to go wild due to misguided attempts to protect rare plants and fauna. Banning stock grazing must have had a tremendous impact, to say nothing of restricting public access.

I'm an Australian. Congratulations BBC, your report is quite fair and balanced. I've got two minor gripes.
1). The Victorian government has dismally/criminally failed to comply with the hazard reduction recommendations of the Royal Commission after that fire ten years ago that took some 175 lives. Massive amounts of fuel has been building for at least 8 years and ignored by the government.
2). The Greens have constantly, deliberately and systematically stifled winter hazard reduction "burn-offs" throughout the country. I hold these city dwelling, academic theorists culpable. Of course the billion plus native animals that have perished are victims of the Greens.
Another fact. Around 200 people have been arrested for arson! A high proportion are kids, and apparently in their statements, a common justification is they are "just proving climate change is real". Australia is enduring an utter tragedy for many, many reasons.

@@ksivsclowns8152 have a bug out bag ready if u havent yet. Preparing for the most likely environmental emergencies is to me a sane response. Heres its food insecurity n flooding that most risk. I was getting really stupidly high anxiety till i figured out my emergency plans. Prepare as if the gov doesnt exist. I dont know of any specific aussie resources, but the prepping community is likely a good start, tho those can b full of fear-porn. I really feel for those in ur generation who aware of wider world issues. Its hard as an adult n i have prob more agency than you do, despite disability. Most parents r unlikely to get onboard. As an Australian I can say that everything addressed in this seems correct. Except one thing. While more people did die during Black Friday (2009) the land mass of the recent fires is almost 10x larger than before.
Another thing is that it co-incides with a hot period happening every 11 years (a solar cycle) and over 200 people have been arrested for arson. In principle the mass shouldn’t of been so large had the greens aloud more back burning but people are lighting these intentionally
