We sang this at our choir!:) It is a beautiful peice!:)
We sang this arrangement in my choir (coincidentally the Choraliers in Dayton, Ohio!) way back in the late 60s. What a beautiful song and so well done!
Haha...I was remembering all the great songs we sang in Choraliers so I decided to look up this one. And I found us singing it! Miss singing in this choir and Dr. B! Such a great conductor
It is an English adaption of a Scottish song. The original is the ballad "Lord Jamie Douglas" which was shortened to the Scottish folk song "Waly Waly" checo out Esther Ofarim's version on youtube. The song them became popular in England and elsewhere where the lyrics were altered a bit. The verse starting "Water is wide" is first found in England

Hey, I thought this was an American folk song. And, I sang this when I was in all county in sixth grade, May 1st, 2010 as an alto, however, naturally now, I'm a soprano even thou I'm not in chorus this year
4th and 5th grade in my elementary school choir
6th grade chorus in my first year of middle school as a soprano and alto (refer back to top)
7th grade in mix chorus as a soprano.
9th grade, aka freshmen year in my high school's concert choir as a soprano 2
And last year, I was in my school women's choir as a sophomore and went on competition in Boston.
But, seriously, I did sing this in the all county elementary choir back in May 2010.
Imma try singing this, thou I'm not in chorus this year, I'm a junior in high school, as a soprano.
The song is 16th century Scottish.
Its a folk song....by definition they don't have composers or writers or copywrite........

You'll do great! We did this song along with 2 others for Festival and got a Unanimous Superior. I bet you guys/gals sound just as good or better that we did. You'll be okay. Don't be nervous. My friend was the only male Soprano. So you'll do great!
