  • At least 10 tandem pilots ended up in hospital today after a storm hit Oludeniz in Turkey. The storm hit Babadag, the flying site above the Mediterranean resort town of Oludeniz, at about lunchtime while "20 to 30" tandem and solo pilots were in the air.
According to pilots on the ground winds hit 50-60km/h and pilots flying were sucked into cloud, deployed reserves and scattered across the area. Social media clips showed pilots descending with big ears while flying backwards.
Artoosh Bayrak, a former Turkish paragliding champion and current SIV pilot who lives in Oludeniz, worked with others on the ground to help manage the situation and confirmed this evening that all pilots were accounted for. "They were super lucky. All survived and went to hospital. A few of them have some broken bones but nothing too serious. All solo pilots have been found, and no one has died."

I was watching from town (Blue Lagoon hotel). At least 15 gliders para parked over the town. Everybody had big ears on and were still flying backwards and then this lower cloud mass moved in and they all disappear 😢.
The most worrying was a tandem glider flying backwards towards mountains below 1200m launch and then disappearing in the clouds. Local Turkish media is reporting conflicting accounts on the number of people involved and injuries... See links below

I'm a pilot on holiday here in Oludeniz we watched as this happened it was mad crazy the storm was building up slowly and when it hit it hit hard one guy who got blown back onto a hotel and landed in a tree, we ran around the back of the hotel to help him, he was ok but hanging in the trees, local tandem pilots should not have flown with holidaymakers! reckless to say the least! this place is becoming dangerous for pilots and the public and has had enough death we've decided as a group to stop coming here! Overcrowding is it's the biggest killer, the guy's that got killed at the weekend after a collision fell onto a hotel roof. Rest in peace 🙏🏻

Wait someone died at the weekend? I was literally at the 1200m point as I just got off the cable car and saw 3 of them jump when the freakin cloud was right there!? I saw them get sucked into it

@Anonymous sss yes two died on the 30th of April, the 3rd person involved was a Brit as far as we are aware he's in a Turkish jail somewhere!! But don't confuse this with the storm that hit yesterday may the 4th completely different incident 👍🏻🇬🇧

On the 4th I saw a girl who was doing it just like I did but I can't forget her screaming.... I really hope she was ok poor girl. All i saw was her get engulfed in the cloud

Surely they saw it coming? And surely they know that generally the wind will drop before a gust front due to the storm sucking in.

They shouldn’t be allowed to take passengers again. Gross negligence

If they could see the approaching storm from launch, they should be shamed and sued by any passenger who got injured. Every penny counts though for tandem pilots, eh? Police won’t arrest them as they are locals, unlike the poor Brit who was arrested after ending up with a collision with a local Turk.

I spoke to local tandem friend who is a very good and responsible pilot. He wasn’t in the air but said this front moved in unexpectedly and described it as “different and sudden weather”. So I wouldn’t be too quick to judge.

Ive seen similar before where a herd mentality takes over. You get nervous and look at the other pilots and they are all still flying so you think all good. meanwhile they are also all doing the same thing. First person makes a move to get down and the rest follow but its too......... I watched once a accuracy comp where pilot after pilot tried to launch in un launchable winds, they called it off after a girl hit a concrete post so hard she shattered the post and only the reo rod up the middle was left.
I watched most of my country do the same thing with the vaccine.

Most of them getting caught were tandem pilots. They don't want to cancel because of the money. And many times the storm doesn't come in or much slower ... So they take the risk and most of the time they get away with it. I was on de Beach and decided not to fly because of weather predictions and you could see the storm/rain coming closer.
