About The Calico & The Cow:
We're Mickayla and Taylor & Calico Cow Acres is the culmination of years of dreaming, wondering what our purpose on this Earth is and how we can make an impact. We’ve been figuring out our passions, testing out avenues that didn’t quite suit us - until we made our way to this overgrown, abandoned farm in the foothills of North Carolina.

An architect that can actually build something. You are talented.
😂😂 thank you, cracking up at this. Idk that I would call myself a carpenter but, hey, it turned out alright🤣
You are definitely a very talented and energetic young woman. Taylor is very blessed to have you in his life. I enjoyed watching you building your shelter for the birds.
Thank you so much!
Mickayla, you remind me of when we were younger and couldn't afford someone to fix/make what we needed. We would take the materials we had on hand, use whatever tools we had, and cut it the best we could and glue it/hammer it/screw it down. It's what we called "jerry-rigging" and making do. You Go girl!!
Thank you! Definitely rigged this thing together, but hey it did the trick! ☺ they've since outgrown it (and are in yet another new temporary coop - you'll see that next week haha) but this one served us well for a solid month!😀
Absolutely understand your anxiety with power tools! I am an emergency nurse and get to see all the injuries from them. So keep being anxious! When you relax and don't respect them, you lose bits!
ha okay i feel validated in my concern!😅 Im sure I'll always be nervous around them. Im just a very anxious person haha
You’re doing a great job! The sky is so beautiful.
Thank you so much!
Sure glad i found your channel, Absolutely love your videos ❤
Welcome aboard!🥰 thank you for the sweet comments!
Now you got building n power tools under your belt, girl you rocked this❤
I watched these all in one night after seeing you at the Hollers! Love you both! ❤ keep up going strong! God Bless and stay safe! ❤🙏❤️
My goodness you’ve been busy! 😆 we appreciate it a ton & hope you enjoyed them all!
I realize this is several months old, but good for you for taking the initiative with the tools! I too am a self-taught female who has learned to both love and respect them. Just please go thru a mental safety checklist before you use them. In particular, you may want to consider pinning your hair up before using them, especially the miter saw where you tend to lean in to check your alignment. Also any loose clothing like hoodie ties, loose sleeves, etc. Especially when you're the only one home.
I've come to love building things, even if they don't turn out the prettiest. It can be quite satisfying :)
Cheers from Maine!
Good tips! I definitely was going through and making sure to be as safe as possible because I was so worried! I'm so clumsy so I have to be extra careful haha thank you!
Nice job on the coop! I love the idea of the ramp swinging down. Could you bungie cord it through the chicken wire to a hook on the wall of the coop or something?
I built all three of our chicken coops, by myself, out of scraps we found on our property when we moved in. It's all a bit ramshackle but it gets the job done and everyone is safe 2 years and counting. Future you will appreciate all the hard work past you put in! And once you learn how to use power tools, there's no going back. You'll be UNSTOPPABLE (that's what I tell myself at least)!
My husband helps to take care of the animals, but his work hours are quite early so that means I get to let out all the birds in the morning and round them up at night too (he's usually on weekend duty though). I feel ya this week! I can't imagine going it alone, and I'm sure that's why homesteading is all about community. Takes a village to raise a barn!
I definitely felt pretty invincible after building this thing! And honestly yeah as long as it gets the job done in the meantime, I can make things look pretty later on lol its a process😆
This is for sure a community thing. I am a super shy/introverted person, so that's a huge struggle for me in person, but I'm loving all of the advice and connections we're making online in this community! So cool to be able to connect with people, but I sure dont think I could do this without taylor here in person, either. It would be way too much!
Looking forward to having little quackers and cluckers myself. Enjoying your personable videos.
Thanks so much! :) we're happy you're liking them!!💕
You are awesome! I’m so happy I found your videos. We’re building a house now and I want to document my progress from townhouse in Cary, NC where I have small container on my 8X8 patio to my new home 21 acres with animals!
To 21 acres in Northern Michigan (Cheboygan) moving as spring’24 as soon as the snow melts
Thank you so much! We're so happy to have you here :) I totally recommend documenting the process. I probably watch our videos more than anyone else because I just love to look back and see how far we've come. I use my phone to film half the time anyways, so just get a tripod and set it up! It's so worth it!
If you do, I'd love to tag along to watch!!!
I commend you for even pulling out a power tool and to actually build what you did was great to see and we are all grateful that you showed people that it is intimidating but accomplishable for us all if we set our mind to and it may not be perfect but you can stand back and be proud of what you did for your first time and the birds are just going to be happy with it in whatever shape it’s in. You two are an amazing couple and have accomplished so much already, I don’t even know you except through your videos and I’m already proud of you. And from a mom of 15 children I think I know a bit of what I’m talking about when I say you kids are doing a fine job, any parent would be proud. Congratulations.
What a kind comment! We're definitely trying to capture our journey here to share with all of you & sometimes that includes intimidating and scary things, sometimes sad & not-so-fun-to-share things, sometimes awesome & fun things! We're glad to have you here tagging along! Thank you so much.
The first time using any power tool is the worst. You'll be more confident in no time. Just keep up your skills. Youll learn by your mistakes.
Hello from Queensland
So true! I felt more confident with the saw even after this first day using it & I think I’ll have Tay teach me how to use more of the tools as we build more things. It’s empowering! 🥰
So proud of you. I had to learn on my own at age 66. I don’t have a miter saw and use a hand saw.
I used a hand saw for this a bit and it was tough! Props to you!
you don't try & do everything at the same time, take one day at a time, do the jobs you can do , it will get easier as time goes on & you have more things in place
loved the thunder storm at the end, hope you got a decent amount of rain
i have 1 & 1/2 acres myself & no partner to do the hard jobs, (have to pay someone to any building or repairs) i do what i can when physically able; so don't fret, you're not the only one out here; just remember don't take on more than you can cope with
loving the videos, thanx for sharing
We've started making a master list of things we need & want to do here. That way it's off our brain and on paper and I don't have to think about it again until I have capacity to do it! I think no matter what, tackling a homestead is a lot of work. Especially with full time jobs & youtube, and some other stuff behind the scenes we're working on :) it's a lot, but we love to be busy and work towards our goals!
Great job girl! You are far to hard on yourself! But great advice
Thank you! I like to set low expectations on this kind of stuff so I'm not disappointed😆😂 I definitely learned a bunch in the process!
Fabulous job❤
Thanks!!!
Another awesome video!! ❤
You're the best! Thank you!
❤
It's scary because it's sharp pieces of metal moving very, very fast. It'll take some practice before your mind can block out that reality and you can think of it like a knife cutting butter. Not at all as scary.
