      Thanks for answering that. It’s pretty lame that they let the video exist for viewing, but then they don’t let you show it. I’m curious if they would allow the Queens of the Stone Age video “Smooth Sailing”. That one depicts a night of debauchery. That song is kind of a deeper cut, so it’s a mystery. 😁

    "Change my pitch up, smack my bitch up" is a sample from the late 1980's track "Give The Drummer Some" by legendary rapper Kool Keith's former band the Ultramagnetic MC's. Kool Keith then did the track "Diesel Power" with the Prodigy on this same album "Fat of the Land". You really should check that one out next, you'll love it! Tread lightly? Who is saying to tread lightly? god I am so tired of these people trying to ruin great things and put negative connotations on them.
    The song is not about a man beating on a woman, it’s not about DV against women.
    The saying is essentially meaning when you pump yourself up, get yourself hyped, doing something intensely, you are smacking your own bitch up, like when a boxer psychs himself up before a fight or when you get yourself pumped up and ready to let loose the dance moves at a rave.
    People need to chill out and stop ruining good things that are harmless but attaching negativity to them where it’s not justified

    • @shifterbbr1986
      @shifterbbr1986 Před 2 lety +4

      Well said.
      If people actually watched the video they would see the twist at the end.
      Saying that tho you are right, it’s not really about smacking anyone.

    • @Penddraig7
      @Penddraig7 Před 2 lety +2

      @@shifterbbr1986 exactly, nobody talks about the fact it’s actually a woman who is doing it, maybe that’s deliberate, for ideological reasons or they just don’t watch that far, they are easily triggered and switched it off.
      I think the music video is very clever because it plays into the narrative that it’s men who are the perpetrators and it holds a mirror up to those people in a metaphorical way and a literal way.
      If I remember correctly the music video was a deliberate poke at those who made assumptions about the song being about man beating women, which it never was, so in response, when they made the video they chose to make it as those people perceived so they would be watching it saying, see, I told you, it’s about a man beating on women but then the last laugh was on them because it turns out that it was actually a woman, making the point that even if it was about beating on a woman, it doesn’t automatically mean it is a man doing it, it could just as easily be a woman. It was actually really well done, I do sadly still to this day hear people say that they can’t believe they would make a music video of a man beating on women etc
      It was banned for a multitude of reasons including depiction of drug use, graphic nudity, sex, driving under the influence, hit and run, violence, vandalism and wait for it, misogyny after feminists complained it was misogynistic proving they clearly hadn’t watched the video and just went of the name of the song and so proving the point The Prodigy were making with the video and that was back then so it’s no surprise to me at all in this day and age that you would get people saying tread carefully or still trying to place negative connotations on to it. When did kids stop transitioning from children to adults, it’s like the world is full of adults who never grew out of being children.
      If WWI had kicked off 100 years after later than it did, we would be F*cked

    At the time this came out, 'smack my bitch up' was slang in parts of England for have a good time. There isn't often a deep meaning to the Prodigy's lyrics, it's just fire music to bop to. This one clinched a subscribe. It's an absolute shame you couldn't react to the video as it takes the song to an entirely different level. That aside, the evolution of Prodigy from a straight dance and big beat band to incorporating electropunk and metal elements was amazing. Too many great hits to list and their influence is still heard today. MORE OF THIS! RIP Keith...

    Me, age 24, July 1st 1997, the day this album dropped. Co-worker of mine carpools myself and another from the office. The car is a new Q4 with a Bose sound system. The friend from the office unwraps the cd and asks to load it up. This track plays. The car stays in the office parking lot. Does not go anywhere. The driver is dumbfounded. The track ends and goes into Breathe. All three of us are just motionless in disbelief. Mind blown.

    from what i recall when this was released, there was a kickback to the lyric and the band essentially responded with it was an off the cuff rhyme to "change my pitch up" and they just ran with it. They didn't really intend anything with it.
    There's some awesome triphop bands from this era, Trickie, Portishead, Massive Attack, Goldie (though that was more towards drum and bass), they all collabed at various points. Prodigy wise, transcending outer space was cool, Voodoo people is another grimy dope track

    REALITY CHECK FOR EVERYONE: The video is on Prodigy's channel here on CZcams. If nobody (since the MTV days) is cancelling Prodigy or the song and CZcams isn't banning the actual song from the platform, nobody's going to cancel you just for listening to it. I mean, if you were cheering on the idea of beating women as you listened to it, then yeah, you'd get some flak but nobody's coming after you just for listening to a song that's still available everywhere AND is one of the band's biggest hits.
    TL;DR: No one's getting second-hand cancelled when the original isn't even cancelled.
    Also, lots of reaction channels have reacted to this. Everybody's fine. All these people who are acting like you're gonna get charged with some sort of thought-crime just for letting this song enter your ears and enjoying the beat are WAY overreacting. It ain't that serious.
    And finally, the band themselves have said multiple times that the song isn't about hitting women. The original sample from Kool Keith was "Change my pitch up / smack my b**** up like a pimp" but the Prodigy reinterpreted the line into a song about going hard in everything you do. In that sense, the B in question is your own inner B that needs a kick in the ass to rise to the occasion. Either way, there are many interviews where the band has laughed at Americans misinterpreting the meaning of the song and getting all up in arms about it.
    E.g:
    - Liam told Q magazine in 2009: "The Americans picked up on it and wanted to make out it was a song about violence. We thought we'd have a laugh with it and set out to make an extreme video. That's the one time we thought we'd be controversial."
    - On the subject of the Beastie Boys asking them not to play the song because it "promoted violence against women," Liam said, "I loved the Beastie Boys, so I was disappointed at the time. I'd still love to do a tune with Ad Rock and I was gutted when I heard about MCA passing away. It was Americans not understanding our Britishness."
    - Asked about the controversial title and lyric, Liam told Seven Years of Plenty in 1998 that in part it stemmed from gangsta rap acts like the Ultra-Magnetic MCs and Schoolly D with "on the edge" lyrics that he used to enjoy listening to.
    - He also said that he was inspired by the furor in the newspapers when "Firestarter" came out ("Ban this sick fire record"). "I thought this time I might as well really give them something to write about," Howlett said.

    • @johnplaysgames3120
      @johnplaysgames3120 Před 2 lety

      @@ocat1979 When I said "video," I meant it in CZcams terms, not the MV. The audio for the song, like everything on YT, is posted as a video file and that's on Prodigy's actual channel. I used a term that was unintentionally unclear and that's my bad but the point still stands: Hollywood and Smokey were going in worried that just listening to the song was going to get them in trouble and debated whether they should dance to the beat if they enjoyed it. That's what I meant when I said people are overreacting. The song's everywhere including on the official channel, the band isn't cancelled (even MTV only banned the video, not the band), and nobody's getting cancelled for listening to the song and enjoying it.
      All that being said, I just watched the video again to refresh myself and the controversy around it is stupid. I mean, obvs, you couldn't show all the nudity and relatively graphic POV sex on MTV but the "problematic" parts are the bits where the POV character drunkenly paws several women as they walk by in the club. The advances are unwanted, the women react with disgust, and that's obviously not the way to treat people... but it's a depiction of a drunk, drugged-up person going CRAZY on a night out and being an a-hole to literally EVERYONE, male and female. It's not a celebration of forcing yourself on or hurting women. I mean, the dudes in the video get brutally beaten down... but that isn't what people are talking about when talking about why the video is a problem. It was the POV character grabbing a woman's boob on the way by or trying to kiss a random woman who ended up pushing them pretty much immediately away.
      TBH, I think it's just the lyric combined with the visual that got it banned. If the same video (minus the nudity and POV sex) had instead been set to a Radiohead song people would've called it artistic. If it was set to a Motley Crue song about partying hard or the trials and tribulations of Nikki Sixx's drug addiction, no one would've batted an eye. And if it was a sequence in a movie or TV show, it would've won awards. People were just primed to be angry by the lyric and went in looking to be mad at something that, ultimately, you could see in a million other places.
      That's why the twist at the end is the big punchline from Liam and company. "Oh, you think this song is about men hitting women? Well, I got news for you..."
      On a side note: Before I found the full, uncensored video outside of CZcams, I did see it on a reaction channel. He censored the problematic bits by blurring them (notably, DIDN'T blur the bits where men were getting beaten down or f'd with) but the video's been up for over a year so, y'know, reacting to the video is doable...

    It also references dj jargon
    Change my pitch up (not take my picture! As many people think it says)
    If you peeps get a chance watch the original video!
    It debuted on MTV at 2:00 in the morning got played a few times and got pulled!
    It got banned 4 a lil nudity sexual situations
    Drug imagery, drinking, partying n pretty much going out of control all for a good time party night!
    Its filmed in 1rst person & in the perspective view of the main person in the video…
    Watch it all the way to see the big shocking WTF reveal at the end.
    Which will blow you away cause you never expected it or saw it coming for that matter!

    They don't have a DJ. Liam Howlett is the musical genius behind The Prodigy. He performs live with the band using synths and computers. They still perform.
    The band was Liam, Maxim, and Keith. Up until 1999 Leeroy Thornhill was also part of the band as a dancer. Maxim is an MC/Hypeman, Keith was a singer and a dancer. Firestarter was the first song Keith Flint sang on - that was on their third album.
    On stage they perform as a band with a live-drummer and guitarist.
    The band once released a VHS tape named 'Electronic Punks'. A fitting description of this once a rave band turned into a big beat act mixing musical genres together.
    They are truly unique and a big inspiration, not just to me but to the music industry itself. Heck, even Madonna wanted Liam Howlett to produce her music (which he turned down).
