L5P Duramax “Service Emissions System” Solution

  • My 2024 GMC Sierra AT4HD with only 8,000 miles on it, had a check engine light pop-up along with a message on the dashboard that read “service emissions system. 175 miles until 65 mph limit.” I have been reading about the manifold absolute pressure (MAP) sensor on these trucks clogging up with soot and causing issues. This is a very simple thing to check. It’s right on top of the engine near the firewall and is held down by a 10mm bolt. Pull it out, spray it off with cleaner and pop it back in. This immediately fixed my issue. The light and notification went away.

Thanks so much for your post! I've taken my 2020 Silverado HD Duramax to the shop twice with the "Service Emission System" message and the 175 mile warning. They updated the software per a technical bulletin - twice - with the light only going out for a day or two. After spending days - and Uber $$ - going back & forth to the dealer, I saw your post after the 3rd time in just a few weeks that the warning messages and check engine light appeared on my dash. I followed your recommended procedure today and it worked like a charm! I had to use a small, stiff-bristled paint brush (couldn't find an old toothbrush) to get the gunk off the MAF sensor as the CRC MAF cleaner couldn't blast through the crud after the 68K miles my truck had on it. The light did not go out immediately and I figured I might have to drive it, shut it down for a few minutes and start it again to allow the computer to register new readings. Sure enough - second time I started it up, the check engine light turned off. Thanks again! (I e-mailed your CZcams link to the Chevy dealer and asked my service advisor to pass it on to their diesel engine mechanics 🙂 )

Oil field worker here. 2024 Chevrolet is my office in South Texas. Lots of idle time in the truck. Currantly have 12,200 miles with 915 hrs. Because of truck lease agreement, our in-house mechanic is not allowed to work on new trucks. Trucks must be taken to a dealer for service. It takes weeks to get trucks back from dealerships. You are the man! Just saved me from having to bump down to an old raggedy truck that has been abused for years. Also, probably save my company tons of truck down time. If I signed the front of the checks, I would send you one.

I'm gonna check this on my truck. I had the same thing happen at about 7,500 miles. Dealership replaced the DPF. 15,000 miles later, I started having an engine code having to do with back pressure, and the dealership said it was "calibrating." Took it back in at 33,000 miles with the same problem, and the dealership said the DPF needs replaced again. I run only Exxon fuel because I can't get TopTier and I use Hotshot Secrets EDT.

@@FixIt_Mann Well, it didn't work, although the MAP sensor did need to be cleaned.
However, reading articles & watching videos, I've learned that running below 1400 rpm for extended periods of time may be causing DPF problems. I travel to work 45-60 minutes on the interstate if I don't have to stop somewhere. Then, I spend the day traveling secondary roads, lease roads, and right-of-ways, which puts me running below 1400 rpms. Only going above 1400 under acceleration mostly. The dealership is going to replace the DPF. I'm very skeptical of claims made by companies about their additives, but while waiting on parts, I used two bottles of Rislone DPF Cleaner in a half tank of fuel which makes it the same ratio as the directions and have been diligent about keeping the rpm's up on the side roads. The engine light went off and hasn't come back on. I don't know if it's the fuel additive, keeping the rpm's up, or the combination of both, but it seemed to work. I'm still having the DPF replaced under warranty. I've fought this for 28,000 miles & 8 months and haven't found any answers. I hope this is helpful for someone.
