The old widomakers are banned in Nova Scotia. $10k fine per rim IIRC. However, if you want to convert the spoke wheels over, you can just use standard dayton rims which take a modern 22.5" or 24.5" tire. As for comming apart, back in the 80's the owner's shop was doing one in the shop and the ring embedded itself into the ceiling, and they never could get it down.

There's actually a specific type of split rim that's called a "Widowmaker" They still make split rims for road trucks, they're not illegal or banned or anything of the sort.
A "Widowmaker" wheel is a wheel where the "split" is in the CENTER as opposed to one edge. THOSE wheels are no longer made, and are (technically) "banned"
I've been doing tires for over 2 decades and in that time have only come across an ACTUAL "Widowmaker" wheel once. If you ever see one in person, you can understand their danger.
On a more common split wheel, you can inspect the lock ring from a (relatively) safe position as you begin to air it up. With a centersplit wheel, you have to get down and put your easily detachable skull in the blast zone. And THAT is how widows were made.

Here's a vid that explains it. czcams.com/video/BuFaNv9y29c/video.html . of course the lock ring wheel can be dangerous too, and any large truck wheel should be inflated in a safety cage

And guess what ? 1980s multigrade 15W/40 oil ticks both boxes, its thin in winter temperatures, and thicker in summer temperatures! Now all you have to do is change your spiked winter tires for your summer tires when the weather changes, not change your oil too !

The V series 2 Stroke Detroit’s as a rule need there rod/main bearings checked and or replaced around every 100,000 miles because compared to the inline 6-71 there surface area is rather small. That said finding a decent Cab Over cab these days is getting pretty hard to find. The good news is finding good running 2 stroke Detroit’s at a good price is a still pretty easy and R & R a engine in that truck is not all that hard especially compared to say a Combine. The problem with the frame is a condition know as Rust Jacking unfortunately back in the 1990’s when that first started to occur on that truck no one split the frame sand blasted it and smeared rustoleum all over the cleaned metal. Before you scrape that truck you might want to post it for sale especially after the borders open up because there is a lot of interest in Cab Overs right now. That said you might want to contact TwinSticks or Gentry and Sons to see if they are interested in that truck as is.

Unfortunately the 2 stroke diesel retirement program began when the Series 60 was introduced and Optimus Brine's bearings looked like they ran for a while before finally letting go, but still runs. In '89 a logger asked me to do a bearing roll in on an 8 v 92. I told him it needed a line bore, new rods, and a new crank before I could do the bearings. He asked me to emery cloth the journals, roll in some 20 over bearings and he'd see what happens. The truck was a mountain, rough road, short haul transport, just for shuttling logs out of rough terrain. That truck ran 50 weight gear oil in the engine and out lasted 3 newer trucks and was still running in 2010, but was shut down by emissions because someone turned him in. I do not recommend that type of repair for numerous reasons, safety being of severe concern because if the engine seizes you could loose all control. This gentleman was an old school logger who drug logs with mules until he could afford to buy his first machine, very different times.
Those old engines leak like crazy, but just keep running, even after the bearings are gone.
Too bad about OB, definitely a noble effort.👌

The rh 5 wheel is the widow maker. Split ring wheels are used in America to this day on old trucks. Mostly chassis though. Steer tire split rings are a no no. The frame situation is a no go here also. Parade truck / antique truck should be OK. No trailers . I worked for iloca in Illinois and MBT for years on trucks and trailers. I'm excited for this build. Vvg brought me here. Good luck with this. I'm subscribed now.

We had one of these widowmaker rims blow up in the tire shop I worked in 20 years ago. it was on ly a 16.5" rim, and it still sounded like 100 12ga shotguns going off at once. The guy who was working on it came back to work just the previous week after being out for several months from getting his hand mangled by a bolt-together forklift wheel that he forgot to deflate before disassembly.

oil is oil, if it lubricates well enough, it doesnt matter what weight it does, so long as it can (older engines have larger gaps than newer engines because of wear and tear, so heavier weight oil can be used, and usually is because of reduction in it being pushed through areas its not normally supposed to)
when in doubt: oil is better than dry, oil is better than water, dry is better than water

I would just order some super cheap replacement bearings.. put them back on there and see how long you can push it until it spins it again.. Sometimes they spin because they are so worn down, and if you have a new/ thick set put in there-- you can get some more life out of it-- more than you might think. I wouldn't do this for over-the-road use.. but for tractor pulls, it would be a fun little experiment.

Was great you attempted & succeeded in getting it running. It’s a shame that the previous owners didn’t use the right oil & wrecked some rod bearings. I like the idea of a pulling truck. Keep searching the scrap yards. & use the F tree kitty to trailer it. But please stay on the cab over Detroit road. Mega cool points!

Last year I was changing oil on one of our welding rigs on the slope, powered by a CLAPPED OUT C7. Pulled the plug and what did I find? (Besides shavings,) a busted off 1/16 drill bit! Showed it to the mechanic, he said they hadn’t opened the engine up since the last 500 hr service. It must have gotten into one of the oil cans. That POS burns a lot of oil and smokes like a chimney when its less that 30°F. Damn thing wont die tho. It has a dead skip until it gets up to temp!

  • @ardennielsen3761
    @ardennielsen3761 Před 3 lety

use your MIG welder to build up a bead on the crank and rod caps, chuck it in the lath one part at a time so the new bearings fit. and yes after welding the rod caps and lathing them you'll need the hydraulic press to snap the caps off. 1/16 inch pentation welds, not that much to do. can do the same thing with the engine block on the lath but it has to have a table that can move a 400lb chunk of iron. could do it with a hand file or rotary tool, $15/hr for sweeping an already cleaned floor.

We always ran mystic 15w40 in our 16v149 1800hp Detroit and it never really had a problem with it at all. It was one of the most reliable frac pumps we had. The only thing it would do is eat turbos every now and then, but I believe the cause of the was running the pump at idle for 30 to 45 minutes and 18 to 20 psi oil pressure and then go straight into a load at 1900 rpm. Lol that is no good for a turbo in the long run. Lol other than that, ours ran great with 15w40 in it. So in the long term, the 15w40 may hurt it with the turbo issue, but I don't believe any turbo will last forever when it glows at full load for 8 hours straight at 2000 rpm. Lol

Widow maker rims are centre split split rims. The old Dayton’s are a 10.00 hundred split rims there are lots of split rims but widow makers were banned in like the seventies. 22.5 are the same as a 10.00 by 20 inch.

MOST modern lifting equipment tires are solid pneumatic and require a big press to install. Still dangerous and I fortunately don't have to mess with them.
