Jailer needs to be compared with Durbar & Annaathe..
Fans like Rajni however he comes. That happened for Durbar & Annaathe.
But for Jailer, apart from fans, Common people like this character coz, its the graceful ageing. He is a grandfather & his romantic pair is not Nayanthara. Its Ramya Krishnan, which is apt. Even in Petta, it was Simran, even though Trisha came for very few scenes in flashback.
His graceful ageing is a point to be noted. In future, any Rajni who has gracefully aged, will be accepted by people. Point to be noted.

Just one correction! The camera man for "Mullum Malarum" was not Mahendran's usual Ashok Kumar, it was Balu Mahendra for that movie!!
What the critic says about 'star acting' is very valid. Also, natural acting (which is different from artificially natural acting - this we should remember) is considered non-acting by many which is unfortunate. When I was a young girl I used to go ga-ga over Sivaji Ganesan's acting and not consider MGR as an actor, but now I feel ill at ease watching many movies of Sivaji Ganesan(not all - for some are extraordinary when it comes to acting) and now I am able to appreciate the natural acting of MGR.

If you had noticed PS-1 audio launch, Karthi would have said , don't come to judge the film, experience the film.. that is what is happening with Vikram, PS-1, thiruchitrambalam, Jailer.. We experience it and feel happy about it.. There is nothing else that looks to us here.. We don't shed 2000,1500 for stupid movies of Vijay or Ajith.. and one more thing to be remembered, Kamal and Rajini two legends at their fag end , not just in career but otherwise as well.. if "WE" don't celebrate them "NOW" we won't get another chance forever.. Then there is no point as we did for SPB hearing all his songs at a stretch on the day of his death.. instead we can enjoy these legends now..

@@aaronshan8956 I don't think stars should give back something which they earned out of films. He is an employee working for a production company and does the job, and takes home his paycheck. Stars are paid based on their ability to pull the crowd and make more money. Just because the numbers are high we can't ask their salary to be spent for the goodness of the general public.

A freudian slip from the great BR. Though Ashok Kumar did cinematography for most of Mahendra 's films, Mullum Malarum was a master piece cinematography by Balu Mahendra.

Everything that was discussed here was really articulated well, kudos to Baddy and the interviewer. I agree with everything that Baddy said except the part where he mentioned that people in South can't accept vulnerable heroes. While the older generation wasn't exposed to vulnerable heores in tamil cinema, I feel that the millennial kids(who grew up watching Rajnikanth) are actually yearning for plots where they can see their beloved heroes being portrayed in a Gray, antagonist, or vulnerable shade. Especially with the exposure that people are getting because of OTT, more and more tamil cinema fans want to watch these actors play interesting roles. Personally speaking, Kabali worked for me and I wish other directors explored that side of Rajni too.

One doubt the same Super star Acted Annatthhe movie with same banner why Fans not celebrate this much before release?
The storyline and treatment was pathetic in Annathe. But still it made 200+C in BO. If the script was good that movie too would have been a hit with positive reviews. Simply put, a Rajni movie becomes a hit or flop based on whether it gets repeat audience (but even flop movies will easily garner 200c).

@@Sujita1712 I did not see Varisu but saw Annathe in OTT. Annathe was an old storyline with a beaten to death' screenplay. Annathe collected 200+C so financially profitable. I don't know about Varisu.

Mass hero for super crass masala without any logic that Rajini has embraced for so long, just for being larger than life has been his main problem. TN audience are matured to assimilate in a great variety, but you have to set the stage and communicate to them with your works, not your words, promos. You cannot expect 10x times returns when you're experimenting. If Rajini was okay with lowering his salary by even 50% and walks into a character based movie, I am sure he can level with almost every actor out there. But the aura these producers, distributors and other money making machinery have created for Rajini is simply unsustainable. He could've been much more with a vastly rich resume .. if he had chosen to give away his take home salary and embraced quality over money! Of course Rajini solely is responsible for this. I miss Rajini's realistic acting such as Thillumullu or Jaani or Dharmyuttham. This is where KH has shined in his career. He chose to embrace films that bring out the human shades of strength and weaknesses. Ofcourse - wealth multiplication, turnovers have been the main goal of Rajini's super stardom. The quality has taken a huge beating. Every director, other than Mahendran, KB, Bharathiraja, have merely exploited Rajini's image for their own cause. All these numbers, titles and FDFS collection are meaningless for an actor. Soul has been missing from many of Rajini's movies!
