The piercing gaze makes the portrait powerful. I get the feel that I'm being stared at, that the eyes are begging for a reply.
And I love it, I absolutely love paintings that convey emotions.

about the intensity of the painting, i feel like the subtleness of the expression is what makes it so intense? it feels very Real, if that makes sense? at least to me, it pulls out the feeling of emotions just starting to tumble outwards?
i really love how you used these two colours together, a lot less blue to neutral than i was expecting and all the more lovely for it! and that "oozing" effect and how it blends somewhat with the hair!

It is a very evocative piece and I can understand how it makes you feel uncomfortable looking at it because it reminds you of sadness. For me it is a mix of sadness and quiet determination not to drown in it. That is what makes this such a powerful piece. You captured it so well that I can't stop looking at it and that expression really draws me in. The color combo for this also works perfect. A print of this would be wonderful. Just want to give you a hug and thank you for sharing your journey with us. 💖
I'm thoroughly enjoying this 2 color series. I'm wanting the list of episodes to just increasingly multiply. There's something so special about the way you communicate your artistic vision, not to mention, you paint beautifully. As a beginner it's so easy to get distracted by flashy advertisements, subtle propaganda, the heaviness of color theory in advanced articles such as Handprints wisdom wealthy website. I'm excited to learn it all at once, but it just isn't possible. I love the emotion seen here. Don't be afraid of it, stressed by it, made uncomfortable. It's part of what makes art so freeing. These bring me peace in slowing down, staying focused, enjoying the process. Keep em coming.

There is something weird about how I am with my art. It doesn't matter what it is (I usually do illustrative work that conveys no emotions at all), but I remember everything. I remember how my desk looked, I remember my surroundings, I remember what I was watching or listening to, what conversations were happening either with me or around me, I remember how I felt. It all comes back when I look at it. It's actually started a weird tradition where I paint on New Years Eve. I'm not one for resolutions, but I like to have gentle goals. When I look at that piece throughout the year I remember where I was, how I was feeling, what I felt like I didn't accomplish the year before, and why I'm working on what I am now. I've always wondered if anyone else is the same with their art.
I love how you captured the expression and the drippy effect...but I also feel like the character is sad cause a bunch of delicious caramel got dumped on their head and therefore deemed inedible...and now I really want caramel...

I definitely understand what you mean by painting intense emotions. It feels exhausting sometimes for me, too. I realize I'm making the expression I am drawing while I do it. Once it is painted and done, it is forever the same on the paper. It can be good to look at it and reminisce how I felt at the time but it is much if I am already feeling something intense. The blanker expressions give me so much calm and joy, like a joy you feel from being content. That's why I love your paintings! Do whatever makes you feel good! ily

I'm a draftsman who loves watercolor. My drawings are crazy-detailed, so when I discovered that I could lay clean water over my sketches first - I was in heaven. Sometimes I'll throw transparent ground over them before the paint to preserve the cleanliness of the paper, but I don't do this on watercolor paper any longer as I feel putting watercolor ground over watercolor paper is just wasting expensive, beautiful watercolor paper. *Tip: if someone isn't already aware, try to always erase with only a kneaded eraser so you don't risk possibly damaging the sizing & end up with weird spots.

As far as your piece goes, it's a good kind of intensity. It's one of the benefits of being an artist, not only to convey your feelings, but to give yourself the permission & the ability to exercise those feelings within, through the creation of your pieces. I wonder, even though it is uncomfortable, (as is the nature of change and growth, at first,) if you would benefit from harnessing your art in this manner. You could allow certain feelings to live inside the piece without having to feel them so sharply when later reviewing the works. Perception is boundless. ;) Keep it up. It is beautiful in many ways. 🥰
My experience in life has taught me that people have various bouts with depression and anxiety throughout their lives.The problem is we’re oftentimes uncomfortable expressing those vulnerable feelings with our words. A painting such as this one captures a troubled feeling. What I love is the capture has a beauty to behold. We feel less alone looking, we feel connected and we feel the universality of the human experience. Thank-You for your lovely video work. You have helped me more than you could know, navigating the ebb and flow of my life.
I enjoyed watching this video, I was reminded of a class I took in college. The instructor was adamant that granulated paints came about from lazy manufacturers who took advantage of nostalgic artists who wanted “old time” paint effects! Needless to say She wanted no granulated paints in her class projects. One thing I am enjoying about watching young artists on CZcams is the fact that there does not seem to be only one way to work. I got so tired of being told to work the “Right Way” or get a failing grade! The “Rules” are ignored or disregarded with a vengeance! Keep going just as you are, please continue to use your own emotions to create these lovely paintings.
I think this is a beautiful painting, and sometimes when you're sad some of the best art pieces can come out of it. you should be very proud of this painting it's beautiful and I hope the next ones will be happier because I want you to be happy.

Thanks for sharing such a personal piece! To me this painting does not necessarily show sadness but when I look at it I feel melancholic, like a rainy day. Definitely intense, and also very beautiful. Congrats, it's an amazing piece of art!
I agree that the piece feels evocative and emotional. Most of that is conveyed through the furrowed brow, and the glossiness of the eye. Very lovely. Btw, I believe M. Graham's PB60 is called Anthraquinone Blue, rather than Indanthrone, just in case someone is looking to purchase this color.

Lovely piece, I don’t think it’s too intense. Intensity isn’t always bad. Often art makes us feel vulnerable.
There is something I find so beautiful about just looking at a picture and just 100 percent getting it. I feel like seeing this piece I know you better, and strangly it makes me happy to know we aren't so different. I can't wiat to see another vidoe like this!
I know exactly what you mean about your art subtly emoting and I think your normal style is really awesome. This painting is definitely different. It does portray a lot more intensely than your normal work. For me, definitely not as intensely as it does for you but it does come across as being personal. That's a really special thing to be able to do with art! This is something that I can relate to but in a very different way. There is a series of paintings that I've created that I rarely if ever share with others and they are all creations that came through me during times of extreme pain and doubt. When I look at them they remind me of those moments I experienced. They remind of what I've been through and how far I've come and I cherish them for that reason. Of course we all have our different ways of emoting through our art and there is no one right way to do it. I think this painting that you've created is beautiful and honest. I love that honey texture which adds a slow heavy feeling to the anxious expression on the face. It evokes a sense of urgency while being held back or hindered, almost to a point of silent panic. It's good but I can totally see why it woud be a bit intense for you as the artist.

I really love this piece it's like your every day painting by Arlee but with a emotional twist!!! I think the neutral expression along with the sad eyes add to the intensity, also the balance of the brown and blue gives more of a emotional side to a blank expression. I think having the piece balanced and not primarily blue or brown was a good idea for this piece and of course I would love to see this as a print ✨💕

Personally this is my favorite piece that you've done in recent time. The emotion may feel piercing to you because you felt it but this piece is subtle in the expression but it feels real. I love how you let the colors play with each other and again favorite piece so amazing work as usual!

My favorite eyeshadow pigment is kind of brown and blue!!
I like that you mentioned that phthalo blue and burnt sienna make an interesting mix. I stumbled upon a mixture of these paints that just happened to be the most beautiful earthy teal color.

And this one feels more like it was birthed out and has a story? others pieces that I say oh thats beautiful I mean it because they are all really good or interesting and beautiful but this one? Completely understand why you don't paint strong expressions. You would have to be in that mood to paint certain expressions however, you can't paint in certain moods. Such an empathic person problem. Completely the same. ❤

This turned out so cool -- I really love the color combination! I'm a huge fan of payne's gray in paintings anyway and these moodier blues and grays worked wonderfully! Yes this piece is very intense and I too have paintings I can’t even look at because I painted them while having a panic attack so when I look at them now I feel the panic I felt while painting. Painting is my coping mechanism and helps me calm down. As for the piece it is just breathtaking. You captured the emotions through the color and through the subtile facial expressions. It feels real and honest. One can feel the emotions by just looking at it. This is by far one of my favorite pieces by you!

I get what you mean about the peice feeling too intense. I often paint when I’m feeling over emotional and there’s on specific painting I can’t finish because it has too much intense feeling associated with it. It was vent art after my grandpa passed and I want to finish it in a sort of ode to him but I just can’t. Art in relation to emotions is so wild.

I’d probably have that expression too if someone was pouring any kind of brown liquid in me. But, seriously, I actually love paintings that show clear emotion, kind of the opposite to you. It’s just an opinion, but it’s especially inspiring when I see someone makes an intense emotion to convey.

Imo crayola has GREAT erasable color pencils for like $3-5 I think- they feel nice, erase very well, and the erasers on the end match the color of the pencil which isn’t necessary but is always fun
When you talked about not touching your M. Graham and Daniel Smith colors in a while, I laughed because I just spent the last few weeks researching and buying my first palette of artist grade paints and did the same exact thing you described, which was research a bunch of other artists' impressions on paints and build a palette of colors that I /thought/ I would like. I look forward to approaching the stage you're in now, where those palettes, while still beautiful collections of colors, don't quite fit what you as an individual artist want from your tools.
If you ever get around to making that updated list of M. Graham/Daniel Smith colors, I'd love to know what your process is, and how your experience with different paints has shaped your opinions! I think it'd be a fascinating video!!

I LOVE Quin. Rust, it's one of my favs. I don't have that blue, but am gunna try this with Ultramarine and Phthalo Blue and see how it turns out (Blue is my favorite, idk why I don't have more). I really love the intense look, but I like intense emotions coming through in art/music sooo... I can't believe I just saw this, I had to reset my notifications onto "ALL", I must've wacked them with my chunky fingers when I was sleepy.😹 Hey, at least I had new vids to watch because of it!
I recently discovered that PB60 (Indanthrone) comes in two “versions”: a cooler and a warmer version. I first had Winsor & Newton’s version (which is cooler) and when I got Daniel Smith’s it was MUCH warmer (a lot more red; like blue jeans). I was confused and looked it up and confirmed this. Not sure which one I prefer. The DS seems darker valued and redder. Both perform similar in mixes.
This pairing worked really well together. I could definitely see a different gentle feeling about this piece. A little bit of vulnerability. Maybe some worry or concerns. It really is a nice change from your other portraits. And I think it’s ok that some of our emotions show through in our art. I’m enjoying this series a lot. Looking forward to the next

i love this new move with the facial expression, i find it so striking and relatable! its painted in a delicate and beautiful way but the expression almost looks like disgust to me, love that contradiction, it sparks my interest.
but of course paint how you want to paint, obviously thats the best artistic choice for all of us. just sharing my opinion on this piece since you asked! it looks really good to me :)

It’s interesting how you painted a portrait of someone with a honey-like liquid dripping off their face while using paints with honey in them! Beautiful piece as always, and this one does seem a bit more melancholy than usual
I don't know if it's because of my mood, the color combination, your commentary, the music, or the book feels I'm having right now (or maybe a combination of all these things) but this painting does feel intense. I just want to give them a hug and hold on tight and say that everything will be alright...

Theres a subtle intensity in the eyes and the eyebrows that kinda... lowkey makes me uncomfortable? But it's not a bad feeling, if that makes any sense? Imo, human emotion is best shown through simple things, like furrowing of the brows, and smile lines. I find it most beautiful because theres a layer of mystery, and vague-barely-there gestures tell the most about someone.
Alot of my favourite personal artworks make me feel unsettled, because I made them when _I_ was unsettled, and it sometimes pains me to look back at them because its like a record of what I was feeling at the time, so I getchu!!
I try not to do this as much, because I dont want to get stuck in the loop of needing sad feelings to make art again. But the liberation from getting feelings onto paper cant really be replicated for me, so im trying to find a healthy balance haha.

And I like the pencil showing through, I think it really goes well with moodiness of certain paintings. It may not be fitting for every mood and emotion, but for most of them it looks cool. Especially for more strong emotional paintings it is great, adds a level of distress, imperfection that humans are. I think it will not fit very light mood or positive picture, but if you use a coloured pencil for those, that will look interesting. By the way, you can use Watercolour Pencils for drawing too, they will wash off if used lightly, or even add a cool effect if used more boldly, and you don't get an oily/waxy residue. I've seen artists use them to enhance certain areas of outline before adding washes, looked very nice. I think Steve's recent Azalea painting features that trick.

It is intense. It’s that one brushstroke going from the eye to the eyebrow. How odd that one brushstroke makes such a difference. Its good.

honestly graphite usually doesn't move or muddy my colors much when i do watercolor over it
How ironic! I just completed a painting with the same colour palette, but the combo I used was Trans Red Oxide & Cobalt by Daniel Smith. They really create stunning warm and cool grays with the cobalt granulating.

What a coincidence that I just recently bought those two colours (from White Nights though :)), a PB29 Ultramarine and PR102 (soo almost PR101 😆) Red Ochre :D I really like this combo actually, so it's going to be great seeing your take on it :) also I recently got really into analyzing pigments in paints 😂💞

I was recently looking at some different neutral mixes and found the brown and blue option. Dont have many browns though so that's a bit disappointing.
