Their live sound was as close to the recording as you could hope for. Andy’s vocals, everything for that matter was top notch, all the way to the synth interlude. Thank you Andy, Dave, Terry and Colin for the great music and inspiration over the decades.
It wasn't so much stage fright as how his body and head were reacting to the exhaustion from touring combined with going cold turkey after 12 years of valium addiction.
@@nudnick His wife of the time has a lot to answer for, though I'm guessing she must've had no idea of the severe, potentially fatal medical implications of throwing away someone's benzodiazepines when they're physically dependent. Absolutely ridiculous thing to have happened.
Unlike most of their new wave contemporaries XTC possesed expert and complex musicianship. Check out Andy's crazy chording mixed with Dave Gregory's skillful leads along with Colin Moulding's all over the fretboard bass work all along with Terrry Chambers' solid precise drumming and you'll know what I mean.
What is sad is how good they are live, yet they never toured this or any of their following albums. While all the band's fans know this story, it is still one of the greatest missed opportunities in Rock.
This video led me to do a deep dive into XTC and place them atop of my list of favorite bands. "Yacht Dance" with its Classical, quirky folk, bouncing bass slides & flanged drums changed my life in ways I can't quite explain just yet. And "No Thugs.." is the perfect, immaculate performance. Thank you for sharing this video!
There is only one camera at the side and other than that there is no where for the cameraman to go to get through to provide a close up other than through the front of the stage!
XTC was so good live. I’ve never seen this before & it’s amazing. Wish they would have been able to do more live shows, but unfortunate for Andy’s mental health. I just love this band.
There's the live quality of the band to marvel at, and also, how pleased Andy seemed to be with everything. He's clearly enjoying himself. Too bad the "fear of performing" crept up and removed that entire facet of their life as a band.
Their best Album IMHO and Andy has hair! Sound quality is good here but more importantly this shows how good their musicianship was as live this sounds very like the record.
As usual with artists, there’s no such thing as the tired cliche “underrated”. You’re either appreciated by those who like your work or you’re not. If you don’t enjoy a great band like XTC, that’s your loss.
Such an underrated band. I saw ExTC (Terry's band playing XTC's classics) at the 100 Club and was a) sad that I will never see XTC live; and b) happy that Terry is keeping the XTC catalogue alive.
40 odd years after it was released I recently bought English Settlement. What a brilliant album. Where are the bands doing experimental stuff like this these days?
Love this performance so much. Thanks for posting in great definition. It's interesting to see the band and especially Andy so close to the bottom falling out, but appearance is that all 4 of them are on top of their game.
Happily, Andy Partridge has been writing songs again! We have recently written 1/2 of my new album together, The Concrete Jangle on Wicked Cool Records. Here's one of the songs: "Fourth Of July" by Steve Conte & Andy Partridge - czcams.com/video/G6PB0I5jkLg/video.htmlsi=zaH_607ATTOd3eiG
Brilliant, but I think some pedantry is required regarding the introduction. As anyone from the area would know if you went from Swindon to Chippenham you'd be travelling in the wrong direction towards Bristol rather than towards London. The station also isn't called Chippenham Junction, its just called Chippenham.
Held a ticket in my hand to see them on the Black Sea tour.Show canceled because of Andy's stagefright issues, alas, never to tour again. So close to seeing my favorite band.😢
@wweebbeerrnn English settlement hadn't come out yet.they were out touring in support of Black Sea and before they got to Chicago were I held a ticket the rest of the tour was cancelled.Settlement came out right after I graduated in 82
@@bradsmith7311 I don't doubt your story, but your memory is failing you: XTC completed their 1980-81 Black Sea tour, it was the ES 1982 tour the one were Andy left the stage while playing Respectable street in France, then didn't show up for a show in the States, flying back to England, and that was the end of XTC as a touring band ...
@wweebbeerrnn hmm.if an album hadn't been released here in the states and a ticket is sold, typically the show for the ticket held would be considered in support of the last album released.thats what I was referring to.by the way its been 42 and nearly a half years ago.really good of you to make a medical prognosis of someone you've never met over the internet.and on such a fine point as well.that goes to your upbringing failing you ,as far as I am concerned that's more problematic now.I will conclude the matter closed.have a day.I will never forget the awesome music and it's influence and impact on my playing, writing and recording so it's all good here.bye now and for all going forward. .
Mental health has nothing to do with it. If you get anxiety from being in front of people, that's pretty normal. A genius can do his thing out of the public eye.
Probably not. In both cases (with the OGWT videos) I enjoyed the performances and downloaded the videos for my own "collection" and then decided to make them available again bc they had disappeared from CZcams. So probably only if that happens again :-)
XTC were the Who of their time, they would kick the arse of any of their contemporaries when it comes to playing live! What a shame and waste they stoped touring ...
Terry Chambers is a powerhouse. I don’t think he ever got the credit he so richly deserved as their drummer.
Their live sound was as close to the recording as you could hope for. Andy’s vocals, everything for that matter was top notch, all the way to the synth interlude. Thank you Andy, Dave, Terry and Colin for the great music and inspiration over the decades.
Such a shame that the "live sound" you refer to was to become a thing of the past shortly after this.
English Settlement is a masterpiece of an album
i was 16 when i discovered it...totally agree!!!!
Andy supposedly developed stage fright later in his life and withdrawn from touring.
But here he has a great deal stage presence.
When this performance was recorded was right before he quit live performing start of March 82. Right at their height as live performers. Very sad.
It wasn't so much stage fright as how his body and head were reacting to the exhaustion from touring combined with going cold turkey after 12 years of valium addiction.

Dave is the star above and beyond in No Thugs in Our House. That riff again and again without fault.

Well Andy's anxiety was real.
they did tour this album or at least some songs from it...remember them ending their set with snowman!
I saw them at Newcastle City Hall playing a lot of this album.

What an amazing group, Been stuck on these guys' music since about 1980. Pure genius!
There's Dave blazing away back there without a single bit of love from the director. Sums up the whole Dave in XTC experience.
Dave Gregory is XTC, a master of the 12 string electric guitar
Watch he whole clip. He gets his head in all over No Thugs, including a little feature on the Prophet.
There is only one camera at the side and other than that there is no where for the cameraman to go to get through to provide a close up other than through the front of the stage!
It always amazes me when I hear a live performance sound as good as the produced version, not to mention incredibly varied and complex songs! XTC!
Amazing band. Amazing music.
XTC was so good live. I’ve never seen this before & it’s amazing. Wish they would have been able to do more live shows, but unfortunate for Andy’s mental health. I just love this band.
But maybe we would never have gotten Skylarking, Oranges & Lemons, Nonsuch etc had they stuck at touring.
The glorious sound of two acoustics at 3:05
There's the live quality of the band to marvel at, and also, how pleased Andy seemed to be with everything. He's clearly enjoying himself. Too bad the "fear of performing" crept up and removed that entire facet of their life as a band.
Actually, he said that he was terribly nervous here, although I know how great this performance is ...

they're having so much fun lol, I love the moment at 9:32; Dave can't help but smile while shredding
What an incredibly tight band.
No lie! Not a single misplaced note, and they make it look effortless.
Oh ,how i love these boys from swindon!! XTC was so unique, so very special, absolutely love them!!
How I wish I could have seen them live…
can't believe i was 15 when this aired!! love XTC!!! Had the album same year...every song was a hit!!!
A super underrated band..
In my book never underrated but underappreciated.

Lots of good young bands making experimental stuff - check out Squid. I know their guitarist is a big Xtc fan
