  • Edmonton is the second largest city in Alberta and it has faced a HUGE growth in population in the last couple of years. Being the provincial capital, Edmonton does have an abundance of economic and cultural activities going on, while still considered to be a fairly affordable large city in Canada. Sitting right on the North Saskatchewan River, Edmonton has an abundance of green space within their River Valley, it has a great entertainment district downtown and of course is know for West Edmonton Mall, the largest retail space in all of Canada! Join me and my Mom as we tour around some of the most central parts of the city and let me know in the comments what your experience has been living/visiting Edmonton!

    What is truly unforgivable is that they still don't have a high-speed train between Edmonton and Calgary at the very least, it still takes about three hours to travel by road, they need to make it faster so that people can easily travel between the two without having to fly.

      We will never get that kind of infrastructure investments in Edmonton, or between Edmonton and Calgary. Both Cities will claim they don't have the budget, even though property taxes have doubled in the past few years, as well as all these other taxes they've introduced, while pretending it's to save our environment, and yes I realize that tax is federal!
      Without a major investment from the federal government nothing will progress too much.
      Trudeau will never agree to put that kind of investment anywhere in Alberta purely because the majority of Alberta's refuse to invest in him.

    Edmonton is an okay city to live in. The best thing about it is the affordability. When I was 26 I was able to afford to buy an average townhouse in an average neighbourhood in Edmonton, whereas my childhood friends in Toronto where paying more than double in rent for their tiny apartment then I was for my mortgage. It's not super lively but there's plenty going on in the summer. There's not a big night life in the city. We do have some pretty good restaurants and decent variety in cuisine. In the past couple years as you pointed to in your video there has been a surge in crime pretty much all over the city. Downtown, the biggest problem being homeless/drug addicts/mentally ill. I've worked downtown for years and never really felt unsafe until maybe 2-3 years ago when this problem just exploded. Job market really depends on which sector you work in. Unfortunately a lot of the newcomers to Edmonton have been unskilled immigrants who are struggling to find work. But if you are a skilled tradesperson or work in healthcare there are plenty of jobs. Most of the high ranking schools are in the more expensive southwest quadrant of Edmonton so if you can't afford to live in that area you usually have to go to your local school. This is Canada, so winter is winter but there are levels to the severity of winter. Edmonton has very long and extremely cold winters. Most years we start getting snow in November into the beginning of April. We usually get a cold snap for 1-2 weeks where is can go down to -45 degrees Celsius, even colder with the windchill. The parks are okay. We only really have one nice park with decent amenities, Hawerlak Park, which why everyone goes there. The river valley area for walks/hikes is a bit scary now in some parts because homeless/drug addicts people keep setting up tents in the wooded areas. But compared to some other major cities, Edmonton is still relatively safe. This is an issue in general for North American cities but Edmonton is not really walkable, even the new developments. Compared to Montreal for example which, due to it's geography and it's history, has a pretty well connected public transit system and many neighbourhoods that are fairly walkable. Though the city of Edmonton is expanding it's public transit system, just because of the way the city has been planned and zoned you'll have a hard time without a car. The healthcare system in our province is like much of Canada, understaffed. Finding a family doctor that is accepting new patients can be difficult. If you like to travel a lot, Edmonton's airport doesn't have than many direct flights to other destinations as compared to Calgary. Childcare now in Alberta is affordable. Most families pay less than $300/month for full-time day care. If you're an average worker there isn't a huge difference in income tax in AB vs other province. Though we don't have PST in AB somethings in Edmonton are expensive because of the logistics cost to get them here vs. say Toronto or Vancouver. People in Edmonton are on average far more conservative than Torontonians but more liberal than Calgarians. If you're looking to own a home and build some equity or just to save money then Edmonton is the best major city to choose in all of Canada.

      @Exaris79 Před 14 dny +1

      You can blame the reasons why Mayor Iverson had quit and Sohi got elected thinking that dealing with a different person will make a difference. Seems Edmonton is less favored so we get less tax dollars invested in our city not from the Federal government. The problem's still there after some elections just with a different name but with the same agenda, although it seems Calgary's having the same issues just that they're more favored. At least drivers in Edmonton are less aggressive compared to Calgary. As for the ETS, seems like the changes intentionally made it difficult for ppl to take the LRT and not make it safer just by at least adding warning lights on LRT crossings. As for healthcare, seems like there's a long term privatization agenda to sabotage the system as the solution to the problem is to pay more for private care compared to the unionized public healthcare.

    • @marian8910
      @marian8910 Před 13 dny +1

      @@Exaris79 The LRT rollout was a mess too. I don't understand why we don't have paid turnstiles like every other city that has a subway or LRT. Because of this pretty much anyone can get onto the platform and then onto the train without paying. I know peace officers occasionally check but I've seen a platform fill up with 50 people and maybe only 10 of them have paid. Imagine how much revenue ETS is loosing because of their own terrible planning. In terms of safety it will make the platforms and carriages safer because at least the drug addicts probably won't be paying to get in. I'm also worried Alberta is going to end up like Quebec in terms of healthcare. In Quebec many people struggle to find public health care because so much of it is privatized. And the reason so much is privatized is because in QC they don't put a cap on what private doctors can charge so doctors are incentivized to go private so they can make more money.

    I've been living in Edmonton for most of the past 15 years and love this city. There isn't a better place in Canada right now. But that doesn't mean it's perfect. We have far too many idiots on the roads who believe that the size of their pickup trucks gives them special privileges. We also have a homeless crisis and an opioid problem that is threatening to destroy the entire city. That's also part of th reason you don't see very many people downtown.

    I left the city in 2003. Best decision I made. Through the years I visited friends and family, growth has been stagnant. It's also a typical car-brain North American city, full of suburbs. No one walks or can reach anything by foot if you live in suburbs. But you're not wrong. The mall isn't that great from before. It was awesome in the 80's and 90's. The new LRT that runs from Millwoods is a blessing, but it's 30 years too late, and the one reaching West Ed will take another long time to finish. One thing for sure though. The people are great. I miss the multicultural aspect of the city. My friends parents came from around the world, as did mine, and I was blessed to have grown up with that surrounding during my time in Edmonton. But yeah, the city will never be for me anymore. But if you value a big affordable house, relying on a vehicle to get you everywhere, and the brutal winters. Then go for it! Another option is to purchase an affordable condo downtown, not own a car, and use public transportation or your feet to easily reach any amenity you need.

      The city did get a little better around 2016 when improvements to the downtown were made. I would say that it is a typical car-oriented city ON THE SURFACE. It’s actually pretty decent with its transit compared to many American cities and even though it took years to fully build out the LRT, at least it actually built one! Many American cities have non-existent or worse rail transit systems. Taking transit is actually encouraged and promoted in the city. It still has problems, but at least it’s trying to overcome them.

    Based on the video I find it strange that the downtown was so empty. Was it a Sunday? Or really early? The street you were on where fawkes coffee is, usually always has something going on. Even Kelly’s pub had no one on the patio which isn’t typical in the summer. Other than it’s pretty quiet on the weekend (but so is Calgary in the core on the similar day and time you were in Edmonton). Especially when there are no events which looks like you hit a day with no events. 104 street has a farmer market on Saturdays and the car show the evening of July 13 and it was busy. The mural “Take a Risk. It’s the most Edmonton thing you can do” was one of the first big Edmonton murals and it was intended to inspire other buildings to take the risk and use their black walls as a canvas for art. (Which it did and you missed some really great art in downtown). It is also meant to spark the entrepreneur and creativity. You missed some really nice things in downtown, one being the river valley access… you mentioned the river valley which was great but didn’t show the funicular (mechanized walk way so people with disabilities or mobility issues can also easily access the river valley). Anyway I grew up in both Edmonton and Calgary. I also lived in Calgary in my 20s. I work in Oil and Gas. I have a video about 6 common misconceptions about Edmonton that I think is a good watch but my overall take between the cities is that Calgary feels more corporate a larger city and Edmonton has a small town feel to it. As for safety, I think the cities are similar. I know where the pockets of homeless people are too in Calgary etc. since the pandemic the downtown has struggled a bit. I live in downtown and I mostly enjoy it but it has some struggles

    As someone who was born and raised in Edmonton and lives in the Downtown I should say that there are not that many more people on the streets even during the week.
    Before Covid there were more people downtown but during Covid so many people seemed to discover that working from home is better and have not returned and many of the stores and shops have closed.
    That being said the downtown is a good place to live if you can tolerate the homeless and somewhat troubled folks walking around.and one can get by without even owning a car.
    The nightlife is not awesome but it's OK and some really good restaurants and live theatre scene.
    There are more interesting and exciting places to live but it is probably more affordable than an lot of other options.

    Not to be pedantic, but Alberta hasn't been getting the majority of immigrants. It is getting it's fair share, but the majority are still going to Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver. What Alberta is getting is a ton of inter-provincial migrants (ie. Canadians.) that are fleeing Ontario and BC for cheaper housing.

    I was posted here in 2014 and angry as hell about it. Real estate and rentals were expensive. Ten years later, out of the army, I’m so grateful. This city was the best place to leave the military from. All the specialists i needed are here, so i’d have been sent here anyway. The schools and institutes are all here also, plus the government agencies.
    And real estate came within reach a few years after posting, in Fort Saskatchewan. Most of these communities around the city have affordable homes and rentals. And depending on your job, living in Edmonton may not be as essential. I’m from Victoria, this place is miles cheaper. My quality of life is so much better here than it would’ve been on the west coast, Toronto, even Calgary.

    I lived in Edmonton from 1982-84 and again in 87-88. I moved there for a job. Looking at your video, the downtown core is a bit better than back then, but quite frankly, it still seems like a boring place for a city of 1.5 million. When I lived there in the 80s the populaion was about 700k so its grown a lot. One thing I found quite poor in Edmonton (vs Calgary) was the public transit system, especially the light rail network, which was far better developed in Calgary back then. Maybe Edmonton has caught up by now? I lived in Saskatoon from 1984-87 and quite frankly I liked that city more than Edmonton (or Calgary). In my opinion the best thing about Alberta is the national parks esp Banff, Lake Louise, Japser ad Waterton. The cties are ok but not really special.

      So basically the same as all Canadian cities. Pre 2000, even 2010 it made sense to be in the cities.. now if you must stay in Canada, get out of the city and preferably be by the coast for some nature and milder weather. Canada feels like a third world developing country. Completely falling behind yet more expensive than almost anywhere else.

We have alot of crime and drug use, downtown is filled with people on drugs and homeless people sadly. They are also apparently going to be raising our bus fare rate from 3.50$ to 4.50$ which is just outrageous. If i could afford to move somewhere else i would.

Also when it comes to living in Calgary or Edmonton Calgary is more beautiful and has been for many years but its not growing like Edmonton and theres more work in Edmonton also theres cheaper rent. If you were asked which city is better situated, or where would you rather live, then yes you can cite Banff or the mountains, but if the question is specifically about the cities themselves, then you have to compare the cities themselves.
